Fran...

This team will be fine without Marble and obviously McCabe.

Gesell and Olaseni might be our best players right now.

Thats been a positive so far this season. Their growth and development. But we need shooters. Uthoff is a no show right now. He needs to improve. He can be a weapon.

My thing with looking at ISU is because they were in same boat as Iowa when both hired new coaches. I mocked what they did at first but can't now. It's working well and want Iowa to do that. We need an impact transfer. Not going to get it on the recruiting trail.

I think Fran has been far from perfect this year... and sometimes he does look a little foolish when he gets angry.

But honestly after seeing this team just not be able to finish the last couple years - its not him.

Good free throw shooters missing 1 and 1's

Sorry I don't know how to say it besides they just can't handle the pressure of the moment.

It's not effort it's just that ability to have confidence and poise when it matters the most.

This group of guys as much as I love them just don't show that at all.

I agree. This team has turned into a very average team with no real floor leadership. The bright spot is Oleseni and the semi-improved play of Woody. White and Marble are lacking as floor leaders. McCabe, well he is a senior so he apparently deserves more playing time. Poor shooting, poor coaching and the typical Hawkeye team that wets it's pants and freezes up on the big stage. Might as well accept a 10 or 11 loss team in the middle of the pack and a one and out in the BTT and NCAA Tournaments. Oh well, football is only 8 months away.

...unfortunately football has been similar in some respects... I wonder if they have an Iowa coaching fraternity that teaches these ways of coaching. I did see Kirk F. in the crowd... maybe he's giving Fran tips on how to lose with talent.

Amen. This team is so frustrating and predictable -

Fran will cross his arms and go bazerk on the refs the entire game. You can tell they just love him

Fran will save a good chunk of his timeouts. ?? Still. dont. comprehend.

We will play victim and hang our heads and pout if every call doesnt go our way.

We will run a pitiful half court offense. I am being nice.

We will only make 1 of 2 free throws when it really counts. Always solid and never maddening

Btw, do we actually have REAL plays and do we actually practice free throws or do we just practice 'Dougying' all day in a circle? Im serious as a heart attack.

White will decide to join the party late.

We will keep shooting 3s no matter if they go in or not. Siiick

Gotta love the white boy from Iowa... Good ol' Zach, I think he's the man and I'd love to crush some brews with him but why on earth is he shooting when everyone and their mother's mother (besides Fran) knows he's having an off night? Keep hustling but by golly..

Why don't we toss the rock into Woody and Gabe more often and let them bang instead of doing our awesome ;picks up top and figure 8 over and over....and over.......aaaaaand over until Zach or Marble decides it's time to chuck up another 3 and pray? MORE DEPTH PREASE AND THANK YOU

Is there a love button somewhere? Well said...

I understand why Fran does the whole 3 fouls sit thing but Gesell was on the pine for way to long. He has most of the leadership with the ball. You have to play him in a tight game like that.

Of anyone on the team, I trust Mike to be able to play long stretches without picking up his fourth or fifth foul.

I agree.. was hoping McCabe would have a senior year like May. I don't think we miss Marble either. If he played like he did in last years NIT (he would be a big loss) But OG,Woody,Uthoff,MG will make up for it.

We got our hopes up with final 4's dancing in our head..This team has to learn to play thru adversity. I am still happy with the prospect of making the tourney. If you can't be happy with that,I don't know what Iowa team you have been watching the last 8 years.

I am glad someone else started this thread, I hate to be "that guy" who calls out the coaches every game. But, our teams issues definitely has to do with coaching right now. The actual in game coaching abilities or Fran are not good and need a lot of improvement, many of the reasons already stated on here. If we are not scoring in transition, he looks lost and has no clue what to do. Perhaps the best indication of how good a coach is how his team improves throughout the year and peaks at the right time. I don't see any improvement to this team since the first month and no new wrinkles or adjustments. This is playing out a lot like last year, losing close games, blowing leads, losing at home to ranked teams we can beat etc. Not coincidence any more, but coaching. I could go on and on but most points have been made already in this thread.

What pains me most to admit, taking off my black and gold glasses for a moment, is to praise Hoiberg and admit he is a far better X and Os coach at this point than Fran. He consistently finds ways to put his players in positions they can succeed, using their strengths. Understands halfcourt basketball. Perhaps most importantly, never loses his cool and is always under control and oozes confidence. In other words, he is acting like a true professional and even Tirico pointed that out last night. The truth hurts sometimes, anyone who denies this is unwilling to face the truth.

Honestly, this thread amazes me. When Iowa gets big wins Fran is a genius and when they lose he is not a good coach and is just a hothead who doesn't act professional.

Let's have a little persepctive here. When Fran took over the program his three best players were Jarryd Cole, Matt Gatens and Bryce Cartwright and then he had Andrew freaking Brommer playing decent and fans thinking he would be a viable player in his Sr. year.

Fast forward to today and 3/4 of that initial recruiting class is still at Iowa. Marble, McCabe and Basabe...riddle me this, which one of those was to be a star? It shows.
Year two in recruiting a lot of people had no clue why Iowa got White and Olaseni...Oglesby was part of that class as well and he seems to have righted his head. Overall pretty productive class, but who was supposed to be a star? It shows.
Year three and the big national ranked class came, the sophomores still have growing to do, but there are a couple guys who can be stars in that class and the other two, time will tell Clemmons is solid and Meyer is unproven. Add Uthoff to the sophomores and we all know he can be pretty good.
This year one guy, who needs to just go through this season, stay healthy and evolve as a player, be ready for a big role next year.

When I take a look at Iowa's roster, espcially the upperclassmen, there is a lot of incompletes there. White is a good player, but he lacks something, like a shot outside of 12 ft, deadly player if he has that. Marble, lacks overall toughness, he is a good player and can take over at times, but why not when Iowa needs him the most, too often he doesn't.
Gabe is looking like the player that Herby had been talking about him being as a freshman, but he still misses loads of assignments on the defensive end. Basabe, does not get enough touches on the block. McCabe continues to struggle shooting and we all know his defense is average as best. Oglesby, too bad he started the season injured, very solid player who is emerging, when he gets to true game shape in a week or so, he could explode.

I think the more complete players are the young guys, but they lack overall maturity in all areas, not a bad thing, but there is a lot of good for the future still.

Iowa has truly gotten beat in two games. Michigan and OSU, but missed FT's have doomed them in the other losses. I am not sure how you can continually point the finger at the coaches when this team is in a position to win in EVERY GAME. Players not executing and missing shots when nobody is within 15 ft of them cannot fall back to the coach.

Jeebus... did you even read my original post? Notice how I said that I've supported him through and through, but that a little doubt crept up on me last night about him. Did I call for his head? Hell no. I wouldn't even say I was overly critical. Look through my post history, I've done nothing but defend Fran, so I don't know where in the hell you get that "I continually point the finger at the coaches", ya dolt. Can you honestly say that Fran's substitution patterns and lineups aren't questionable sometimes though? Seriously? Do you think that McCabe should keep playing as many minutes as he has and keep getting the green light? Would you like to keep seeing the ball in Marble's hands at the end of the game so he can keep turning it over? The guy isn't clutch, he never has been, but for some reason Fran has a crazy amount of confidence in him.

But yeah, these losses, I would definitely not put them on the coaching. The players have to execute and make their damn free throws. I don't know how you coach clutch-ness, or how you can blame a lack of it on coaching. I agree that some posters are ridiculous when blaming that on Fran. I just really hope you weren't referring directly to me, because you were totally off base.

Oddly enough, despite having such a worthless coach and marshmallow players, we appear to be ranked number 13 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.....

What do they know.....

I don't think it's fair to pick out individual games. Let's see how the entire body of work shakes out. This season is key as it may be the best we see for another year or two with Marble graduating and Woody going pro. Fran could gain back a huge amount of confidence by knocking off Michigan. Michigan coming off a lopsided win looks pretty tough. Give them a beat down and Fran is back to being the man. A little mid season slide can be overcome in a hurry with a couple wins.

Marble is arguably our best player and he's gone next season. This team loses him and McCabe and adds next to no impact players in this recruiting class. Fran has got to find an instant impact transfer or JUCO player that is like a Royce White, DeAndre Kane at Iowa State. Those guys make a huge difference. If Iowa had one of those types of players we may are scary good. I'm done criticizing how Hoiberg and ISU build that team. They are winning with NBA talent on their roster. Iowa has none and that's a huge flaw in this team. We may have 11 guys but none of them are great. Rather have 1 or 2 great players.
You smell a lot like a clone troll.

I used to blame Fran for the close losses... but after watching this team over the past two years it's not him.

Sometimes his line-ups puzzle me yes... but the players lack confidence in key moments. It's a personality and confidence issue. Fran can't go in and make a wide open shot for them or hit the front end of a one and one.

They take turns choking at times... not every game all the time. But when the pressure is on we tend to wilt.

meaning its the coaches job to get them in position to have a wide open shot.

If we are missing wide open shots (likke OSU) that's not on the coach.
