Fran to Penn...

IIRC, he played there.

That's a good fit for him, IMO. He'll be back home essentially and won't face near the pressure he would at a P5 school.

I am a little surprised, though. I thought he would take a year off and hang in Indy for awhile before getting back into the grind.

Hearing quite a few different places that Fran has closed a deal with Penn.

Going to be interesting to see what he does with no athletic scholarships and essentially zero NIL. Probably pretty refreshing for him and I think he'll do fine. I'll be following and rooting for them.
Yeah, Me too. How far is that away from Butler?

I should mention that the no scholarship thing isn’t a Penn-only situation. It’s in the Ivy League and no teams in that league are allowed athletic scholarships.

Which is kind of moot because students are either filthy rich to go there, or they don’t pay tuition anyway because admission is based on need once you’re accepted. No in between.

Like I said I’ll be following it.

Same way with Drake and playing football in the Pioneer league. Except, many kids they actually recruit are on a full "academic" scholarship, oftentimes with additional need-based aid... regardless of their actual academic record or financial need. Go figure.

He'll be fine ... Back home ... Good fit ... No pressure. Good way to end a good career.

I'm kinda surprised he'd take a job like that... Yes it's where he went to school and I would say that's THE reason he took it. But man he's passing up being able to take a yr off to watch his youngest play ball without having to coach him plus Connor coaching him. Penn isn't exactly across the street. Maybe he figures if he took a yr off it'd be that much tougher to get back in. He's not getting any younger. He's always marched to the beat of his own drum I suppose so good for him.

He's probably not ready to be stuck at home with his wife full time... I mean we all have heard how she is.

There goes his $4.2 mil buyout

Is his buy-out contingent on him not working? I would think this just means Penn pays him next to nothing while he collects 3.5 or 4 million from Iowa, but I am more familiar with how this works in professional sports.

I am not certain, but I think he has to continue to work somewhere in the basketball coaching profesion to get the buyout. He can't simply retire or do nothing.

That's why you see a lot of fired football coaches work as offensive or defensive analysts for a year after they get fired.

Bingo.

Fran’s contract has language that protects his buyout if he’s fired without cause. If he’s fired with cause or leaves voluntarily he’s on the hook if he gets a new coaching job.

I think that would be a good retirement gig. While they don't have athletic scholarships, they do admit students with "an exceptional ability in some area".

You can also get money to some/all of those schools if you have an exceptional talent or ability such as having a piece of literature published, having performed in a big time music orchestra (or whatever), etc., which helps bring positive attention to the school, or if you help meet a minority "quota" (not that it's constitutional to call it that, but, well, ya know).
