Fran says Woodbury will most likely start

I don't mind Woodbury starting, but to basically announce it before practice even starts doesn't really make sense to me as far as motivating Woodbury or the other players. Everyone on the team wants to start, or at least have a chance to prove themselves worthy of starting.

Perhaps there's somebody else who assumes he's going to start and might need a little reality check to motivate him to work harder.

"As far as which player has improved the most this spring, McCaffery said 'It’s Gabe (Olaseni) without a doubt. Without a doubt.'â€￾

I don't think it is at all far fetched that Gabe could be the most improved player. Reality is he has the most room for improvement. He is extremely raw and has been playing basketball for just a handful of years where the rest of the team has been playing since they were 5 or so. Gabe could be twice as good as last year and still regulated to the 12th spot on the bench, just this side of Stokes.

Was there really any doubt about Adam starting......

I wasn't sure Woodbury would start, at least right off the bat. It's tough for a skinny freshman big man to jump into the starting lineup in the B10. Can't wait to see how he develops though. Frankly I'd just love to see Fran use him to jump around like a maniac guarding the inbound like Mr. Davis did with big Les.

The one benefit that I can see from this would be defining rolls for the players. Fran could be telling McCabe and Basabe that they won't have to be playing the 5 spot with Woodbury and Gabe, and therefore letting them concentrate on the 4 spot.

Les Jepsen from Bowbells ND! Remember how they always would tell us where he was from on television... like it was amazing that a kid from ND could play basketball?
Tom Davis used Lohaus in that way too... remember when Bobby Knight got sick of it and ordered his players to throw the ball at his face?

I don't remember the Knight situation, but yes, I do remember Lohaus guarding the inbound. And if I remember correctly, Lohaus did it the craziest and was all over the guy. Les was bigger and mostly jumped straight up and down with his arms straight up.

edit: also I always thought it was funny that our guys would usually be jumping a foot or two over the line and the refs almost never noticed, no matter whether home or away, and no matter how much the opposing coach screamed about it.

Kent Hill got drilled in the face on the inbounds pass.

I remember Kent Hill getting the ball thrown in his face and I think I recall him punching the Indiana player in the face

Might be fun to see Woodbury and Olaseni playing together from time to time. "NOT IN MY HOUSE" rejections for any guards or small forwards trying to take it to the basket, lol

I completely agree. People never seem to realize the NBA is more spread out with the extended 3 pt line, NBA players are bigger, stronger, and faster, NBA games are 48 minutes with 11 less seconds in shot clock which equals way more possessions than in college which obviously equals way more points. It's really that simple. Saying the college game has better defense than the NBA game is like saying that high school basketball has better defense than college basketball.

Enough of that tired argument; My second point is, does this assure the starting 5 of the following?

PG - Gesell
SG - Marble
SF - White
PF - Basabe or McCabe
C - Woodbury

Yah but do you really think that line up can compete and compare to the likes of

Cully Payne
John Lickliter
Jarryd Cole
Aaron Fuller
Andrew Brommer

AND THE SYSTEM!!!

Hoping Woody has improved so much even in off-season fall work-outs he is the starter. GO can still come off the bench and be a force.

I agree completely about the comments that they DO play defense in the NBA. As already noted these guys are such tremendous athletes and some tremendous BB players that within NBA rules and over a long season these guys REALLY DO play defense, even in the regular season in crunch time and especially in the play-offs.

AS for Devyn Marble turning pro. If he is good enough and can get drafted in the 1st round and enjoy a career that includes another lucrative contract and 5 to 8 years of millionaire earnings... by GOD... man go for it.

We at Iowa never, ever, want to hold back the professional career and earnings of anyone... be it in the NFL, NBA, WNBA or someone really good Radio, TV and Film, the Writer's Workshop, in chemistry or any other major or course of study.

At the same time keep your head on straight... and develop, hone your craft, enjoy the university and educate yourself while you can.

Going out as a JR with no degree, un-drafted and working yourself up through NBDL is not the best career choice unless this is your only choice.

Hmmm.......I don't remember that one. I (think) I remember Kevin Boyle getting hit in the face though.

I remember when the indiana player threw the ball in the face of Lohaus. They had trouble getting the ball in all game with a seven footer in the inbounders face. Davis use to have a play where the guy pretended to shoot, but threw the ball into a big man instead. It was a great play that seemed to always catch the other team by surprise. Fran should incorporate it into his offense.

I have always felt that there was an argeement between Fran and Adam. Not only that he needs every minute of actual game experience before conference time. I would imagine that Olaseni wlll get quite a few minutes also......

To have Myers as a back up to both of them is a valuable bonus. I have another feeling about Myers. He might be one of the break out players this year.....

:)

This. Fran must have promised him the starting job during recruiting. So, it is probably best to just say it now and let everyone know it before practice starts. That way it will alleviate some of the hard feelings that is going to happen. Woodbury will eventually be good and worthy of starting. Getting him the minutes from the get go, is the quickest way to make him worthy. Regardless, whoever practices will get the starter minutes...

Who was the player we had during the Alford era who would start, but never finish? I want to say Reiner...?

Jack, I didn't scroll down far enough. Your post says it... I do think KM is a good addition to the squad as well.

Oh, you mean Fran McCaffery? "As far as which player has improved the most this spring, McCaffery said 'It’s Gabe (Olaseni) without a doubt. Without a doubt.'â€￾ Link

My guess he's getting ready to go the football game this afternoon, kicking it in his office, or chatting up EC Matthews. Actually, that's a fun game, BTT. Where IS Fran McCaffery?

Well Grape, have you ever noticed that 90% of everything Fran says is hyperbole that cannot be believed? All you need to know about Gabe's improvement is that an incoming freshman was just named starter before training camp even starts.
