Fran McCaffery Addresses Hawkeyes' Defensive Deficiencies

Players don't seem interested in playing defense.

Coach doesn't seem to know how to coach defense.

Both of these lead to a hideous record...

Even more mysterious is nobody on that coaching staff can step up to help coach the defense. Anybody who has played organized basketball gets defense drilled into them from the start, correct footwork, form, positioning, weakside, strongside, etc.. You can't tell me that all those coaches aren't very good with defense.

Footwork and positioning are key, Melrose, along with everything else you mentioned.....

It is extremely frustrating to watch the opponent casually step past a Hawk defender in the paint to receive a pass under the basket for an easy basket.....

The corners and baseline are our main weaknesses. There always seem to be an opponent wide open in the corner, even one who has just nailed a three from the corner It is too easy to go around a Hawk defender to the baseline for an easy layup.....
