Fran Gets Paid

Fran's not leaving, he's restoring Iowa basketball to it's rightful place. Consistent appearances in the NCAA tournament starting with this season. Possible Big Ten Championship team down the road. I think he's that good.

I'm OK with the salary but the length seems too long. He's proven some things the first 2 years to be certain and I think he's the right coach, but if things were to fall flat on their face for the next 3 years, we have 4 additional years at 1.6 mil to buy out.

5 years @ 1.6 mil and a clause for 'no easy out' would've seemed appropiate.

I still think we have the right coach.

I'll oblige. What are we doing giving a guy that has yet to sniff the NCAA tournament that kinda coin for that long? If I could do better let me know, but that's all I had on short notice.

I think the work of getting Iowa from where it was to where it ended the 2012 season will be harder than getting Iowa from where it is now to the NCAA tournament.

I hope this is Fran's last job and he retires after a long run of NCAA appearances. This Hawkeye fan is glad he's in Iowa City.

In order to gain faith/trust you have to give some too. I love the extension.

If Fran doesn't pan out, Gary Barta will not have the opportunity to choose a 3rd basketball coach. So signing him or not signing him to an extension doesn't necessarily save his job. Fran's performance is what will save his job.

This. Barta was already all-in so make Fran's job as easy as possible.

Couldn't Fran STILL leave for another job? Or is something written into a coach's contract that says he can't, or would owe "compensation" of some sort, etc. if he bails on the contract?

Coaches can always leave. There will be a buyout due Iowa from the school that gets him, if he does.

I agree. The end of the Lick era was the lowpoint for Iowa bb since Dick Schultz...we are talking 40 some years, gang. When a program gets down that far, they can be cannon fodder for a decade or more. Iowa bb was on life-support and they were being measured for the casket. Fran had to to emergency resuscitation, and luckily was able to revive the fading patient.

Fran had little time to salvage this program, and he basically made zero mis-steps,anyone of which could have been fatal. Retaining Zach and Devyn, bringing in Melsahn, nailing Josh, and then grabbing Aaron and Gabe, and finally, securing Woody and Gesell....every recruit has panned out, above their rankings. He installed a style of play that attracted fans and recruits alike. He won some big games vs top 25 teams. He schmoozed the I Club folks. He recruited tirelessly and scored on the recruiting trail. He made the NIT and won a tourny game in Year 2.

Fran earned this contract by his performance. He had a two year probationary trial run,and he came thru with flying colors, unlike Lick.
He has shown a track record of turning around programs, and has Iowa on track for a major turnaround. He is the kind of coach you roll the dice on...it is a good gamble. And every coach is a gamble. Give me the guy who plays fast, talks fast, pitches his program fast, and wins fast. IU gave Crean 4 years to start to show some progress, and are now being rewarded. We have locked in Fran for the rest of his career,I think. Iowa has much better luck when they lock in longterm coaches in fb and bb.
Fran is one of those competitors who will never be satisfied,as he hates to lose. I like that kind of coach for the longterm.

Back in 1999, Bob Bowlsby and the majority of the Hawkeye nation would beg to differ. :D

Except the coach you are referring to (and I will leave him unnamed) reached the Sweet 16 that year. :D

As someone else said, it would take a deep tourney run.. Whether Sweet 16 qualifies as "deep" or not is up for debate, but I think that would be enough to get the attention of some other AD's.

Great hire, Great passion, Great coach, in two years has shown he has the triple crow can recruit, can develop, can in game coach. great move great man

Cograts to Fran, guy has earned it and will not rest. Iowa will be dancing in 2013, just have to believe people!

This is what happens when coaches sign contracts. Expectations go sky high and then people will rip into coach for not meeting them.

Iowa needs to just focus on improving from last season. It's too much to expect this team to make NCAAs with a still young team and a freshman PG. Big Ten is just brutal and Iowa will still struggle in conference until they gain more experience and add more talent. But at least contract extension helps with recruiting by providing recruits a sense of stability in coaching staff.

Excellent post. We are fortunate to have Fran. Apparently some do not appreciate what he has achieved so far. It has been rather extraordinary.....

Making the tournament is the next goal no matter how deep we go.....

There is a strong possibility we will go this season, next season should be a lock. We shall see....

:)
