Fran being interviewed on Jay Mohr Sports

I've attempted to listen for a minute or two when a sub for Rome or Jay was in but I sat in silence instead. I'm happy I made the decision that I did.

Marble typically does what you described, yes. But that's not what he was doing against Stauskas on Saturday, or against Harris. When he locks in, we don't have a better perimeter defender than Marble, IMO. Mike plays it at a high level, too, and he plays it more consistently. But Marble has shown this year that he is willing and able to take his defense to a whole other level when he's matched up with another great player. And when he does that, he's top-notch, IMO.

This is I remember Gessell guarding Staukas a lot also... and the commentators describing how the last few teams that played him had been able to shut him down buy using smaller fast guards (Yogi Ferrell ect) in reference to Gessell guarding him.

The idea that Marble shut down Staukas is not really true... there were multiple people that guarded him including Oglesby.

Marble got switched off him on a screen when the Dakich made the comment. Now Indiana very well may have used that strategy but Mike was not guarding Stauskas intentionally.

Ogelsby was on Stauskas for about 1 possession and he got burnt back door.

The idea Marble shut him down is true.

We need that same intensity and attitude from Marble on both ends.

Didn't Mike guard him most of the first half? They both did a great job taking him out of the game

There were times Mike got switched on him due to screens but I don't believe Mike was ever intentionally matched up with him.

Don't just take my word on it... Fran was on the national radio show giving Dev the credit and talking about the change from game 1 to 2.

I'm not saying Gesell didn't also do a great job on Stauskas. But we've also seen Marble take Gary Harris away from MSU, and I don't think that, even as good as he is, Gesell could have done that. Harris is better than Stauskas.

I disagree. Marble guarded Stauskas for pretty much the entire 2nd half, but in the first half Gesell was definitely on him for a significant amount of time. It was enough for me to not chalk it up as "just when they switched on a screen". Plus Dakich is an analyst for a reason. He was a player and a coach. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have made the match-up comment simply off of one screen rotation.

I'm not taking any credit away from Marble. He played him great as well. In fact I think it was probably a smart strategy by Fran to start Gesell out on him and then switch it to Marble. Saves the legs of both of Iowa's most important guards and playmakers.

As far as his radio interview... Mohr asked him specifically about the Marble/Stauskas matchup. Not mentioning Gesell doesn't mean he didn't guard him. It just means he had a limited time segment on the radio and he answered the question he was asked.

Pretty sure as another poster stated that Gessell was guarding him also... not just a switch.

I can go back and look at the DVR but I'm fairly certain Mike was guarding him in the first half.

I would normally agree with you 100% but 5'8" Yogi Ferrel shut Stauskus down. So I think Mike would do just fine.
 
Seemed like both Marble and Mike guarded him well and most importantly prevented him from getting the ball in a position to shoot the ball. Sometime Staukaus would drive to the basket and have to pass to the corners because Woody and Gabe would step up. The Team D was excellent. Seemed like we knew we were going to win this game no matter what.....
 
Go back and watch the tape. I know for a fact that Marble matched up with him from the start and even commented on the game thread that Dakich's comment was stupid because Mike was only on him because of a switch.

As Windsor said: Thanks. I like what Mohr said about Fran not touching the refeferee. The referee walked right into Fran and pushed him with his arm and immediately, within one second, called the T......

Good to hear someone else in the media saw it the same way. I can't see Fran hitting a referee. I have seen him get into their faces, Big Time, and thought they deserved it.....

Oglesby was on him for at least 3 or 4 possessions, and i recall each time saying my dad's ear...."i hate that matchup i hate that matchup" over and over until Stauskas either scored immediately when he got the ball or someone switched. Olaseni hedging him to half court off screens and having the ability to recover quickly down low helped.

Sauskas beat Oglesby on one occasion on a back door, but Josh did well on him when he had him for a few other possessions. Wasn't it Josh that forced Stauskas into a turnover, and Josh jumped on the ball and called a quick TO?

Is it just me or does Fran contradict himself in this line of thought. IMO if he did it to "light a fire" he's saying that he knew exactly what he was doing prior to going off on the official in the first place. That said, I don't understand how he could "lose control" of himself by continuing to chase the official after he'd already accomplished his goal. I think he simply lost control. As a varsity school soccer coach who has often used the strategy of getting a yellow card (soccer equivalent to a first technical) as a way of motivating a team, you go into that situation already knowing that you're going to get the first one and are more then prepared to drop it once you "cross that line". IMO a coach (with self control) doesn't put himself in a position where he is still chasing after an official after the first techincal is issued, if he is in fact doing it intentionally.
