Fran and the coaching staff

They just don't know how to teach defense. If we are going to run and gun I'm find with that. But all of his teams but one year that I can remember... defense is a on going weakness. He just doesn't appear to know how to teach or coach it. He needs to find someone who can help him because it's an ongoing problem. This year with all the young bodies it's just sticking out way more.

Rarely are coaches really good at both. It would be nice to be a little better tho. But like I said in another thread, if we spent more time on defense, maybe our offense wouldn't be as good.

Going back to the tourney last year, the Hawks sure know how to get blown out...No a blow out is like 15 - 20 points. These scores are something else.

Hawks gonna lose 20 games this year.
I almost think Fran should leave IC before Kirk.
I cannot stand coaches who don't stress defense.
Defense wins games.

Defense generally wins championships.

I can't stand a coach who is a blithering idiot when angry. Angry is OK. It's the blithering part. I think we will see Fran push things, but he wants to coach his kid.

Gold, you need to find another hobby. You have become so predictable that you are growing very boring on this site. Iowa wins their last three football games, and you have decided that is a meaningless recovery from a disappointing season. The basketball team is made up of a bunch of guys who have absolutely no experience in BT basketball and are struggling to find an identity and you are focusing on Fran wanting his kind to play for him and that he gets in his players' faces when they are not living up to their potential. I would bet you are one of those who gets on KF's ass when he does not go off on his players when they are not doing well. Your level of common sense and knowledge of coaching is off the charts, and not in a good way.
Will wait to hear your justification on this one...

Fran brought us back from the dead. We should forever be in his debt for that. Here comes the part that will bring fire. I know it sounds crazy because we know we are one bad hire from hell, but we have reached our peak under Fran. I hope I'm wrong. I still have some hope, but you won't see elite level coaches and programs have this little effort on the defensive end. Couple that with the year end collapses and I'm concerned we've seen the best Fran has to offer

Said this in an earlier thread - but Iowa has been in the top 30 in nation in defensive efficiency for 3 out of the last 4 seasons, so this notion that Fran doesn't know how to coach defense is completely fabricated because everyone is watching a team full of players (minus 1 guy) who are playing their first real meaningful minutes of D1 basketball.

3 of our starters combined for almost 2000 minutes last year in Uhl, Baer and Jok and our PG is in his second year in the program

Besides Jok - they were all bench and roll players who are now being asked to start and burden more the load - it takes more than 6 games.

Uhl has played a lot of basketball here and Baer is in his third year in the program and played a lot of meaningful minutes. The reality is we lost 4 starters and all of them were very good defensively but people seemed to only look at replacing their offensive production

Totally agree - and those 4 starters didn't just show up at Iowa good at defense - it came over time. Iowa is playing a lot guys with little experience sprinkled in with a 1 seasoned guy and a couple of guys who have seen some minutes. It's going to take time.... if we as fans didn't realize it coming into the season, I think that's on us. Fran IMO has built enough good will to work on reloading his roster without all these absolute determinations 6 games into the season. i get that's what message boards are for I just wish that losing didn't always bring out the worst in some fans when it came to analyzing a team

I think Mike, Woody and Sapp were plus defenders their freshman year actually

They did - and they lost to nearly every team worth a crap along the way - they got hot in the NIT - are you saying that's impossible for this team to do?

That team beat UNI, ISU, Wisconsin and Purdue that year. I don't think this team has the talent to get in the NIT title game, I don't even know if we have the talent to get to the NIT right now.
