Forgot How Bad Christensen Was

I recall Jake saying in an interview, after leaving Iowa, that his throwing touch got pretty messed up - he attributed it to so much weight lifting.

What's the point of running this guy into the ground years later?

I agree.

I also recall someone saying (sports writer or sports radio guy) that every time they went into the weight room, Doyle had a board of players that needed to loose weight. They said Jake Christiansen's name was always on that board. Which was their way of hinting that Jake wasn't taking the necessary steps to keep himself in playing shape. Not sure why I recall that. Maybe someone else can add the "who said it". I don't recall.

Does freaking BTN have another Iowa game they can show? Why do they continue to show that freaking game with MSU. I think there are other games to show...Orange Bowls, other bowl games...and a few pretty good B10 games. But no, all we get is MSU - Iowa with Jake Christenson going 1- 15 or something like that through 3 quarters.

I just watched the game and was quickly reminded how bad he was. That's stating a fact. I don't think anyone is making personal attacks on the guy. In my lifetime, or at least from the period of Iowa football that I can remember, Jake C. was easily the worst QB I've seen start for Iowa. He started for quite awhile given how terrible he was. Why should that be off limits to discuss? The BTN was showing a game that perfectly displayed his ineptness. It was a deja vu moment for me.

I think the thread title pretty clearly explains what it's going to be about. If you don't want to read about it then... don't bother? Policing what others want to talk about, especially this time of year, is much more ridiculous than discussing a bad QB.

I can see that because his mechanics were really good his freshman season. He threw ball really well and looked the part. The he buffed up and did not look the same passing wise.

I can't imagine getting stronger could turn you from a good passer to a horrific one. I guess if he went from skinny to body builder all while never throwing a ball it's possible. But still highly unlikely. I am leaning towards agreeing with the "case of the yips" theory.

I agree. I think there is a high possibility he was just looking for an excuse at the time and didn't want to accept the blame himself. Christensen was kind of stocky by nature, but it didn't seem to me like the Iowa weightlifting program transformed his upper body like he claimed. Plus there isn't a single other QB in the KF/Doyle era who has looked bulky in the upper body. If anything they've looked kinda scrawny and could add a few pounds (Stanzi, JVB, Tate, Rudock).

I could see his point if he was lifting weights right before a game. Kind of like lifting before you go shoot hoops. It makes it difficult to get a feel for the ball. In hindsight, that is kind of what he looked like throwing the football, but there's zero chance anyone was having him lift prior to kickoff.

Doyle is pretty adept at making guys stronger without compromising their flexibility and athleticism. Much of his program is position specific, guys do training that simulates what they'll be doing on the field.

I am not sure how "likely" it is but I can attest to the fact that it does happen, at least to southpaws. As a young lefty pitcher, my fastball was good to very good until I started lifting. I watched it fall 5 to 10 mph within a few months.

Here is the strange part from his Eastern Illinois 2009 season..........

Made an impact at starting quarterback in his lone season at Eastern Illinois... earned second team All-OVC honors and All-OVC Newcomer team honors... finished season 175-of-300 from 2,204 yards and 19 touchdowns... had 11 interceptions... season best game was in win over UT Martin in which he was 18-of-21 for 322 yards and four touchdowns... ranked 30th nationally in passing efficiency and 50th nationally in total offense... ranks 10th on EIU single season list in both passing attempts and passing completions... ranks tied for 10th in single season touchdown passes.

He was a dual threat QB coming in, and we forced him behind center. He wasn't that type of QB. While he was horrible 99% of the time, the 1% he showed some glimpses of promise we were in a more hurry up offense. He was quick with his decisions (cause he didn't have to think), and we made the pocket more mobile to allow him to see down the field.

But even then, he really struggled with accuracy.

Part of the Iowa way, which is basically never (can't say absolutely never because of 2004) adapt to the personal that we have.

2004 could be better said as, "Adapting to what we did NOT have"
