? for Jon

Why is the media afraid to ask KF hard questions? Would they not be allowed access if they did.

Well I'm not Jon, but let me take a crack at this.

Because they're professionals?

Because it's a press conference, not an expose for investigative journalism?

Because they are not fans, they are asking questions to get quotes for an article for their job?

Because this isn't a school yard fight

Because what would be gained? Do you think KF will suddenly say, "alright, got me. I stink?"

Because there is a difference between tough questions and loaded ones?

Because unless they are writing an editorial piece, their job is not about analyzing the coaches performance?

I would say they understand that they arent going to get the answer they want, so they tone down the question to try to get some kind of answer. They could ask kirk whatever they want but thats just going to make him share less.

Kirk doesn't answer the easy ones, so what's the point of asking hard ones? Also, they need to deal with this guy year round so if they **** him off, they aren't getting a questions answered for a while.

I hate the pressers as much as anybody but they aren't trying to uncover watergate here.

There is a massive difference between Iowa press and press from a major city or larger state.

Iowa is not a destination job for a journalist. So, either somebody is desperately trying to hang on to their only option or trying to climb a ladder.

Neither situation lends itself to making waves.

Beyond that, Iowans are fairly protective of their own.

But to say this is just par for the course in sports journalism is not really correct. If you think so, read a paper from LA, or NYC.

So you want to compare the two largest media markets in the country that are largely pro sports towns to journalists covering college and high school sports?

Secondly, while I agree with you about Iowa not being a destination, I have a feeling that Morehouse could write his own plane ticket anywhere he wanted to go.

Third - what is the question that you want answered?

Sportswriter: How can you expect fans to continue to give you a pass when your teams have failed so consistently on fake punts?

Coach: I can't.

That's the end of the question. It's not like he is going to suddenly go to confession and have a temper tantrum.

should someone ask Gary B. the tough questions? Well, he already knows the questions. And we see the answers play out in real life. And people don't like the answers and I guess it's time to adjust to that. Take it or leave it.

What is a hard question in sports? There are none.

Anyway, if a journalist becomes too big of a tool with respect to a college football program, they lose access. Once they lose access, their "articles" get worse and they are out of a job.

KF's press conferences are a joke, no writer in his right mind will ask KF a tough question because he gets all defensive about it and then you might not get another question answered from him again. Lovie Smith used to act the same way with the Chicago sports writers, I cannot stand a coach who acts like they are above the press to me it is like slapping a fans face. Journalists are the closest thing a fan has to a voice and I take it personal when any coach acts like an *** towards them. It drives me nuts to watch a coach dance around questions, giving generic answers, or play stupid like they don't understand the question.

Jesus Christ.

This thread is the biggest fail in the history of this site and that's saying something.

In a way da Boss is right. But I do think a fair question to put to GarBar, Sally Mason, a couple of the top donors to the athletic department, maybe even a few Regents, is whether Kirk Ferentz's salary is justified based on the results being seen on the field. Are they satisfied with the low to mediocore level of performance exhibited by Ferentz-coached teams, particularly in the past two to three years.

But part of the blame also goes to the sports columnists. If Ferentz were subjected to the same intense scrutiny and scathing commentary as coaches in New York City, LA, Chicago, Dallas, a few other markets, he'd either toughen up or get out. But is the average Iowa fan even remotely interested in that sort of coverage?

Oh yeah, your "I've had it" thread is so much better than this one. You start yet another rant on the coach thread and then crap all over this one, who at least took a different angle.

Yeah some angle: Why don't the sportswriters go rogue, ignore their editors and act like super fans.

That has all the angle of a perfect ******* circle.

So the coach can't win, really. At Tennessee, Derek Dooley used to be really open in his conferences. Then one time he made a comparison (which was actually pretty sound and logical) between his defense and the Germans in World War 2, and people were ready to burn his house down. People either get upset about what you say, or get upset if you don't say it at all.

...Actually this is about winning. Urban Meyer could say anything short of "Go F**k yourselves, Buckeye fans" and there would be no drama. But coaches who aren't winning can't say anything right.

This.

Was there a huge uproar when KF was winning B1G titles and going to New Years bowls?
