? for Jon about Barta

A great many fans are upset about many of the Iowa games not being on tv. Has Barta ever discussed this in a press conference or on a call in show? He refused to change the time of some of the games to get them on the BTN. He also let Mediascum carry some of the games, when a few years ago they were the BTN enemy. Many of my friends and I have E-Mailed him, and he refuses to answer. This shows a lack of respect for Hawk fans. Is there anyway you could get him to talk about this? Thanks.

This is definitely a lack of respect, but more importantly it shuts out the potential "new" fan and growth of the program. Out of sight, is out of mind. Which equals a shrinking fan base... You can't possibly grow when you cannot see the team win on tv. Not good for us, not good for recruiting, not good for the program. Fran has got to be ******!

As for Mediacom thing, EVERY programming carrier was and probably still is an enemy of the BTN. At least when it comes to programming charges. If I was a programmer I would hate the likes of the BTN, ESPN and the few others that make cable rates so unbelievably high.

I think Gary would tell you that not having the game on TV helps the Hawks sell more tickets and gets bigger crowds.

I really don't think Iowa has much say in the matter. If they start to win more games and compete in the Big Ten, then fewer of these games will be on BTN.com

I write the BTN about this a couple years ago. They were of the opinion that Iowa basketball wasn't appealing to very many people and at the time they were correct. Fran will change that. Fran can! !

I actually asked Barta about this back in September and got an answer similar to what Mirage was told by the BT.

I posed my question to Barta, telling him I understand that he didn't control it, but was there any reason to think it might get better in the future. I did not like his response.

He told me that the BTN has to be concerned with ratings and that Iowa basketball would not be a big ratings getter right now. I told him that I thought the B10 was also supposed to treat each school equally and pointed out how many more .com games we had than other schools did.

I realize that last week, was just an exhibition game but did you see what the BTN was showing last Sunday afternoon? They had a field hockey game and then 2 consecutive soccer games. I'll bet boring old Iowa basketball would have out rated any of those games.

I still want to know why Mediacom gets the games. Are they offered to anyone else.? I believe this was Barta's call.

This is been my reply when these types of questions are posted. When Iowa becomes good again and soon, they will not only get more BTN games, but also ESPN and CBS, don't fret, the time is coming. With Fran at the helm, Iowa will be good for a long time.

I imagine with the money they gave to get the court named after them, Mediacon gets first refusal to broadcast any available games.

indiania has finished behind iowa the last couple of seasons, they get a game against stoneybrook on tv. really? who cares? there are so few nonconf games this year on tv, that really btn has done more harm to iowa basketball, then our previous coach has done. iowa basketball before christmas has become an afterthought.

seriously do you have ANY concept of how the sports TV business works??

i love it when people complain about topics on which they havent the slightest clue.

Iowa doesn't have the tradition of Indiana, so there really is no comparision, the whole state lives and dies for that program, unlike Iowa basketball.
BTN has not done more harm to the Iowa program than any coach that has been there, that makes no sense. Maybe if Iowa beefed up their schedule a little bit they wouldn't be the afterthought they are before Christmas.
I think that has had a lot to do with the desmise of Iowa and TV in recent memory as well. There are so many factors in it, but scheduling hasn't helped anthing as much as any other factor.

BTN does really need to evaluate what they put on TV. I don't understand how a conference can have so many teams in the top ten, yet the sport is on twice a week (Volleyball). The fact is the sport plays five days a week and yet they stream it on the internet and can't play it on TV...I mention this sport for a few reasons, coaching it for one. The other reason, our AD who is the typical guy...however, he said, after paying as much attention to the sport this season, I am all in, this was his first year as an AD. Volleyball in the United States, for girls, is the highest participated sport...why when you have a conference that has had the last four national championships are there not more matches on?
Lastly, if you can stream online, put it on TV...period. The ratings have to be better than whatever they are putting on, especially if it is replays of anything.

Agree completely with this, Sportstalent.....

And here is another thing...yes we know football rules, but for the basketball fans that want to see their teams play against the piddly non-conference teams, why can't the AD's and the BTN get together and have "Basketball Sundays?" Also, have two channels available for showing games.
Think about it, doesn't the BIG team have the say on times when the they play these nobody's? So, start playing basketball at Noon ET and through the day...if there are teams that prefer not to play on Sundays, fine. When football is over in two weeks, there is absolutely no reason that every team cannot be on TV, as there really shouldn't be one anyway as it stands. If there are no night football games...guess, what that airtime is free.
It makes absolutely no sense and it shouldn't matter how good or bad a team is when the conference has their own flipping network.

BTN has so much garbage programming that I simply don't understand how men's basketball ratings could be worse.

Exactly. Rating is NOT the reason. The other night while Iowa was not being shown The Big Ten Network had a women's soccer game on. They have so much fluff filler that nobody watches...ratings is NOT the reason.

Anyone down with staging an Occupy BTN? I've got a few vacay days left just tell me when and where.

Are you foolish enough to think HN is made up of mostly TV sports business personnel?

Please enlighten us?
