? for Jon about Barta

I imagine with the money they gave to get the court named after them, Mediacon gets first refusal to broadcast any available games.

One has nothing to do with the other. Mediacom negotiates with the BTN for the rights to games they don't televise. The floor deal is between Mediacom and Iowa.

A great many fans are upset about many of the Iowa games not being on tv. Has Barta ever discussed this in a press conference or on a call in show? He refused to change the time of some of the games to get them on the BTN. He also let Mediascum carry some of the games, when a few years ago they were the BTN enemy. Many of my friends and I have E-Mailed him, and he refuses to answer. This shows a lack of respect for Hawk fans. Is there anyway you could get him to talk about this? Thanks.

With all due respect here (and remember I'm saying with all due respect) if Barta stopped to answer every idiotic email he got he'd never have time to actually do his job.

Your glorious insite to how the sports tv business works would be a start.

You attack West but offer nothing. In my book that makes you either a fool or a tool.

i offered up my opinion that he was out line. not sure what else you would like.

this would be like me going to over to some architecture message board and complaining about how my house doesnt have a big enough garage.

i know a quite a bit. it used to be my family's business. im not an expert, but i certainly know the concept of something as simple as selling the broadcast rights.

For games that are not televised on BTN...

I still want to know why Mediacom gets the games. Are they offered to anyone else.? I believe this was Barta's call.

the BTN has the option to show the game "locally", that's why Mediacom ends up with some of the games shown on BTN.com and not on BTN.

And for the question in another post about why BTN doesn't use overflow channels for non-conference basketball, the answer is they can't make money on it. The overflow channels cost money, which can be justified for football by the ratings those games get.

I am not happy about the lack of Iowa non-con games shown on the BTN, as this set-up was not how it was pitched when the network began. Basically if you are the fan of one of the non-traditional basketball powers, you don't get to see your team much in non-conference play, unless you fork over the dollars for the online subscription, in addition to the money you are already paying to the cable or satellite provider to get the BTN on your TV set. If the games have to be online, then at least make them free if you have the BTN on your cable/satellite package.

Overall, the BTN is still a win for Iowa.

Ratings are the reason...

Exactly. Rating is NOT the reason. The other night while Iowa was not being shown The Big Ten Network had a women's soccer game on. They have so much fluff filler that nobody watches...ratings is NOT the reason.

in that they can't justify the cost of producing the telecast and showing it on a Friday night. There are almost zero people outside the state of Iowa who would watch the Iowa-Chicago State game on a Friday night.

i would be very interested in price that the BTN charges mediacom to:

1) put a BTN "Student U" production on TV

2) buy the rights and produce it themselves

the Student U platform is an exceptional opportunity for the J-schools of the big ten universities.
