Football salaries...

Ferentz is in pretty heady company with the top paid college coaches. Too bad he cannot perform like those paid the high salaries.

When you look at the coaches listed in the top 5 or top 10, Ferentz sticks out like a sore thumb as being easily one of the most overpaid coaches in the list compared to success.

Can we just pin this to top of the board? Then, people can come to one specific thread when they want to complain about Kirk's salary. After that is done, we can pin another thread to the top of the board, showing how much money the Iowa football program brings in, and how few high level recruits there are in Iowa.

Good thing JoePa was making only a million. Penn State is going to need some of that cash for other things in the near future.

The UofI are the ones who keep offering him extensions and raises. Are people really proposing he should turn these raises down? I just don't get it. He is not like the majority of coaches who use every good season they have to get interviews with other schools, or NFL clubs to leverage more money out of their current employers. Surely you will all keep this in mind next time you are offered a raise. Surely you will tell them, "No thanks, I do not deserve it..."

The state of Iowa is just loaded with "speed" players too....... I bet most of those other coaches in the top 10 have 50% more "speed' players on their rosters and 300%+ "speed" players in their backyard to recruit.

These are the dumbest threads that a person can start. Did it ever occur to you that his current pay reflects past years and success when he was underpaid? It also reflects the desire to keep him from leaving and going elsewhere.

Define success. Is it just national titles? The only guys below Kirk that have titles are Chizik and Paterno, so in that sense that would all be overpaid. Does it take into account conference titles and BCS bowls? If this is also based on wins and losses, why does Chizik get a pass? He has a 33-28 record. Hoke's record is 55-52. Muschamp has never been a head coach and Petrino only has one conference title......at Louisville. Those guys are all in the top 10 and it sounds like you are giving them a pass even though they haven't accomplished what Kirk has.

Its hard for people to understand that top 25 programs must pay top $ to retain or attract top talent. Some of the coaches at these programs have contracts that were created when $2M was the going rate. These new hires are setting the salary whick is $3Million + at the top 25 programs.

OSU & PSU will most certainly be over $3Million, and it wouldnt surprise me if OSU pays the next coach $5Million (assuming a big name coach)

You clearly don't understand how the real world works yet. Ferentz is offered raises everytime his agent starts the rumor mill about Ferentz heading to the NFL. Now here is a little insight that might clear it up for you: What years do you think Ferentz and the rumors of him leaving pop up? A little hint - look at our best years and ignore our worst years.

8 of Alabamas 20 commits are from the state of Alabama (40%)
2 of Oklahomas 14 commits are from the state of Oklahoma (14%)
1 of Iowas 12 commits is from the state of Iowa (8%)

2012 official commit list

Texas was 5-7 last year and just 6-3 so far this year. Of course they'd won 10 games for 8 straight seasons prior, including 13 games twice.

Stoops went 8-5 in '09 and the boo birds were out.

Petrino at Arkansas went 5-7 and 8-5 in '08/'09

Mark Richt at Georgia went 8-5 and 6-7 the last 2 yrs and was considered on the hot seat, though currently 8-2 after an 0-2 start.

My point is that even the finest coaches have teams that stumble. If Ferentz starts delivering a pattern of mediocrity, I'll be concerned, but until then will give him every benefit of the doubt.

Surely you have some proof that KF had anything to do with those rumors. Clearly it is impossible that his name gets brought up because he is one of the top coaches in college football. Links are appreciated, thanks in advance.

I think Fererntz does an outstanding job considering what he has to work with and earns every penny.

What people need to remember is that this is Iowa. We have considerable disadvantages when it comes to recruiting base, weather, mountains, beaches, and all the other cultural attractions that draw student athletes.

Even the big dogs don't win all the time.

Go Hawks!!!!!

How many of those 14 commits were "speed" players? I bet a lot more "speed" players on Oklahoma's roster. Alabama probably is 95% "speed" players.

Exactly. Also look at programs like S. Carolina, Clemson, and Texas A&M. Always getting 4 and 5* players but don't have near the success of Iowa. TAM has only won 2 bowl games in the last 15 years!!!!

This is always a nice reminder. I keep forgetting how talent rich and beautiful the states of Nebraska, Idaho (Boise St) and Arkansas are (Billso, you did well to mention their '08 schedule).

Can we revise that bonus structure to negatively impact KF's bonus when the opposition successfully executes a fake special teams play?

Which is probably why the number seems so high as hardly anyone in Iowa makes even close to that figure.

And 6 are from Texas. Last year, 13 of 19 were from Texas (and 3 from OK).

Oklahoma's recruiting prowess has always been about Texas, and the Big12's heavy Texas presence.

I've seen years of data from both Rivals and Scout and talked to their scouts and an NFL scout and coaches about this. The vast majority of top D-1 recruits come from CA, TX and FL, followed by the other southeastern states (GA, SC, AL, MS, LA). Doesn't mean great players don't come from the Midwest, but the numbers are lower. Furthermore, the data shows proximity to school is a huge factor for most players. Not all (there are plenty of Brad Banks exceptions that don't prove the rule) but most.

Those who say Iowa doesn't work with a significant recruiting disadvantage know nothing about recruiting. Every single professional I've asked about this - and since 1999 it is dozens - has said the same thing. Perhaps they're all wrong.

That's a good point. The going rate keeps rising and teams have to rise with it. I wouldn't be surprised to see $5 million at OSU and PSU either.
