Five Non-Conference Power 5 Programs for Hawkeyes' Schedule

You know ND plays at Northwestern this year, right?

And not at Soldier Field - in Evanston.

You can't really say NW is more of a patsy than the Hawks, and I wouldn't call them more of a big name...

but ND has a HUGE alumni base in Chi-town. it makes $en$e. If you were a ND alum would you rather stay in Chi-town and go to @jNW or perhaps travel to @South Bend, or, travel to I.C.?

Playing ND would be exciting. Sometimes ND is really really good and that could be trouble for the Hawks. I'm a big ND fan but they usually play at the same time slot as Iowa...I always end up watching Iowa instead. I know the Iowa roster, ND not so much.

I've never seen Iowa play ND in my lifetime. It would be awesome. I think.

I've hated ND since I was a kid.

Even more than the f*in Raiders!

So if I was a ND alum my head would have exploded a long time ago...

But, trying to think like some other ND alum, I have no interest in setting foot in what NW calls a stadium. I'd rather take the 3 hour road-trip west.

I understand the local rivalry and revenue this generates, but both teams are playing 9 game conference schedules. Over the long run having no P-5 level OOC games hurts both teams. Does this rivalry have to be set in stone every damn year. This whole thing was already old, now it is ridiculous.

Let's be blunt. Iowa State is so afraid about the state of things, they won't even take a two game break to schedule a home-at-home. Good God, play Nebraska or Mizzou once, while opposing fans remember who Iowa State is. Iowa State should be playing teams in potential recruiting areas, Games against Minnesota or Purdue would be well attended.

They won't even try a one timer to test the waters. If they ever get dumped by the Big Twelve they'll have no more clout with recruits than South Dakota State. If they don't schedule games with nearby P-5 opponents they're setting themselves up for problems down the road. Same with Iowa though to a lesser extent.
Ding ding ding. Winner winner chicken dinner.

ok. not open to a logical reply.

Northwestern has a great deal of academic prestige, and a lot of future high earners go through the business school. Their football program is also, more than respectable, at this point. They are both Chicago area schools with fair amount of cultural overlap within their alumni and student base. Don't kid yourself, Northwestern is a lot more attractive to Notre Dame football than Iowa. Eastern Iowa is farm country and light suburbia. That has little cache with the Notre Dame fan base. The end of season rivalry games between the two back in the 50's are an obscure historical footnote.

How about a redirect?

ND just finished a home-and-away w/ NC State.

In 2020 they go to Ga Tech.

You think either of those rate much different than Iowa on the patsy / name scale? I don't.

Only difference is Notre Dame is required to play those games as part of its contract with the ACC. Every school in the ACC gets a home and home series with ND, playing them twice every 6 years.

Dang, you guys are tag-teaming me on this!

But yeah, I forgot about the ACC tie. Explains why / how they have games scheduled out to 2037!

How about this: in '20 & '25 they have a home & away w/ Arkansas.

That's similar degree-of-difficulty, similar "name" value. And no Chicago / academic prestige / cultural overlap (?!?) factors.

i'm gonna 86 your statement, 87. we were discussing ND playing jNW vs Iowa and I provided you with a logical response that you replied that you hated ND so much that you couldn't even consider thinking from their perspective.

so, there's that.

re: NC State and GA Tech; they are both on the east coast and in very fertile recruiting areas that ND does recruit.

I have been yelling and screaming for the last 10 years minimum that we need to schedule all non-conference games with power 5 schools just for the fact of selling tickets. I find myself skipping more and more of the non-conference games because they just aren't competitive enough for me anymore. There is only so many times and so many ways to beat down a Northern Illinois team.... it's just old. Prior to week four play, the kool-aid drinkers think we should be a top ten team then we go to Wiskey and get our asses handed to us because we played such week and non-competitive teams the first three weeks. I think physically and mentally we are not ready when we get to that first conference game.

At lease go schedule a bottom dweller from a power five. Let's do home and home series with Kansas or Iowa State (oops we got that one already) . I loved playing Pitt a few years ago, Colorado might be fun, heck I might even go to road game for that one.

As far as local schools I know it helps UNI out a lot financially, but if we don't schedule their ass beating for the year someone else will so it's not like the school is going to go belly up. The Clown game, is fun all week leading up to the game but I think it is time to put it to bed as well. Again it's just time to change things up and for no other reason. The rivalry between Iowa and Nebraska and Wisconsin are a lot more interesting that the Clowns.

Barta... time to change the schedule up, not to mention your position as well.

I didn't have any problems with playing Pitt. Since the Penn State vs. Pitt game has been revived, it is less likely Iowa plays them though.
