what is the guy's story? injuries are part of the game ... did a Hawk cheapshot him?

Curious as google provides little in the first three pages

I was at that game. It was a really physical game, and N'western won the Big 10 and went to the Rose Bowl that year. Pat was their star defensive player. He broke his leg in the Iowa game and missed the Rose Bowl. Word is that he holds a grudge towards Iowa because of the missed Rose Bowl.

Fitz is one of those guys that has to invent faux-outrage for motivation. There was nothing dirty in that game that caused his injury. In the words of Old Kirk....."That's football."

He got Stanzi, that S O B.

So...we still are mad about that.

So their Fitz, our outrage outrages your outrage.

Win Hawks....win.

Have you ever heard Gary Barnett talk about coaching against Iowa? He is the one that started making it a rivalry in their mind. I think it started the year before that actually game that PF broke his leg, for Barnett anyway. I believe he said Hayden referred to his players as "boys" (not in a derogatory way, mind you, but evidently Barnett took offense) after the game during the handshake with Barnett and Barnett didn't like that.

That is in a book that either Barnett or Hayden wrote, I cannot remember which.

It started in 1992 after we beat them 56-14 when Hayden Fry stated to Barnett "I hope we didn't hurt any of your boys."

Yup, that was it. Thanks.

BTN has a show on the turnaround of the NW football program. It was pretty cool. And Barnett does a radio spot on Thursdays during football season on a sports radio station in KC. He's a pretty good listen.

Had a buddy years ago after a Cubs game met Fitz in a bar on Rush street. Said he was cool to him and my buddy was wearing a Michigan hat. His buddy had an Iowa jersey on and Fitz wouldn't shake his hand or even talk to him. Later he told my buddy he "hated Iowa" and blamed them for missing the Rose Bowl. There was a couple of "F*** Iowa", shouted apparently through the night everytime he saw the jersey. This is all hearsay. But pretty cool if true.

Here's video footage of the play where Fitz broke his leg--watch at 2:02:

Get over it Fitz

It was a bitterly cold game. Had snowed significantly the night before in Chicago. Game day was in the 20's, low 30's for temps, with high winds. The coldest game that I've ever sat through. Northwestern obviously had a very good team. Iowa went ahead early, but Northwestern ended up turning the game on a fumble return for a TD and a punt return. Fitzgerald did have the leg injury, but I don't remember anything dirty or unsportsmanlike that led to the injury.

If this is true, Fitz needs to get some therapy and quickly for unresolved anger issues. I mean, how childish is that, to be a p**** to some guy wearing a Hawk jersey, who had nothing to do with the game in which he broke his leg? If true that is.

If it was shortly after and Fitz was in his early-mid 20's, I can understand that. That would be a pretty harsh thing to go through. If he still uses this, it's funny and a little sad.

Win Hawks....win.

Dude is a child. Blames an entire program for getting injured in a sport in which injuries happen all the time. Grow up, man.

you have to also recall that Gary Barnett said he was insulted by Hayden Fry after Iowa beat N'Western one year like 60-0. When the two coaches shook hands at mid field, Hayden said to Gary something along the lines of "I hope we didn't beat you boys up to bad today." If Barnett took this as an insult, I'm sure he really wanted to beat Iowa more than anything after that and he probably brainwashed his players into hating Iowa as well.

Also, I saw Gary Barnett was using Iowa as the goal to get Northwestern to, as he felt that Ohio State and Michigan were unattainable, but felt that they could reach that level that Iowa had enjoyed under Hayden.
