Ferentz is 7-3 in his last 10 games against ISU.

Ok, but isn't a 10 or 15 year sample more relevant? Of course they don't want to use those numbers as it shows them Winning 30-33% instead of 50% of the time.

Nebby fans prefer the 20-25 year sample size as well. The more relevant 5-15 year...meh, not so much.

Pretty good guess. If you apply the Pythagorean model of football record predicting (uses "points for" and "points against") over the last 19 years, the Hawks predicted record comes out to 12.7-6.3. Even over the last 10 years when Iowa has had the better of things (7-3 true record), the Pythagorean prediction is that they should be 8-2. That might reflect poor game management in close contests, or just bad luck.

Well we have witnessed poor game management from KF on many occasions.

Yeah, that is the downside. The upside is they have been the "better team" by a wide enough margin that they still come out on top more often than not. In a perfect world he would build great teams and manage a great game. I am holding out hope that an old dog can learn new tricks when surrounded by a bunch of young dogs.

Perhaps overly optimistic, but what is the point of pessimism in fandom, am I right?

It is indeed, and if you listened to ISU fans. one would think the all time series between Iowa and ISU is 10-10. You would also think that ISU had the longest consecutive NCAA tournament appearance streak in the nation at 6 years.
What matters is that in that 20 season time span, Iowa has been in two Orange bowls and a Rose Bowl as well as finishing in the final top 10, five times. ISU has accomplished what? There is no comparing the two programs. A team is judged by their performance for the season. ISU is a totally irrelevant team in college football. End of story.

This is totally true.

That's the tricky thing about Kirk. He does way better than average at fielding a good team but he neutralizes his success by being well below average at game management. It's like one half of the fan base only sees the good, while the other half only sees the bad.

It does seem like he's getting better at the game management aspect lately. Ironically he seems to be fielding less talented teams lately too. It seems like with the young guys on the team, we are approaching some 2008-2010 level talent in the near future. If they can have that talent and have the "young dogs" bring the game management, we could be in really good shape soon. Teams loaded with NFL talent that play aggressive sounds good to me.

In KF's defense there are lot of coaches out there that struggle with game management. You see it on Saturdays and there are some dudes on Sunday that struggle with it, also.

...and is 10-5 in his last 15 games against ISU.

So what? During his tenure at Iowa ISU has been one of the most inept D1 football programs in the country. Remember 2014? The Clones won TWO games that year, one of those wins was against Iowa, in Iowa City no less. Here are the number of wins the Clones have had the last 15 years: 2,7,7,4,3,2,7,5,6,6,2,2,3,3 and TBD this year. I'd be shocked if they win more than 4 games this year. That looks like a team you should beat just about every single year to me. Iowa really gets nothing out of this game; if they win it's expected and if they lose they're a laughingstock for losing to such a pathetic program. Kirk should be at least 15-4 vs the Clones for his career at this point, not 10-9.

Kirk is an OK coach; his style of coaching admittedly has kept the Hawkeyes in some games against superior competition, some of which he's even won. The flip side of that is that his style of coaching has also resulted in a number of losses to inferior teams, I'd guess far more than the average coach would have. His record against ISU is really an embarrassment.

Well the 2014 team was the worst Iowa team I've seen under Ferentz since the 2000 team. They won a whopping 4 games so getting beat by a 2 win ISU team wasn't bad like it normally would be, IMO.

You're thinking of the 2012 team; the 2014 team went 7-5 in the regular season and got killed by Tennessee in the Tax Slayer Bowl to finish at 7-6.

I think you are mistaking 2012 for 2014. 2014 was Rudock's 2nd year as QB and the hawks won 7 games I think including throwing away the game against Nebby and getting clocked against Tennessee in the bowl game.

2012 was the poor losing record. But it even makes losing to ISU at home in 2014 even worse.

Yep I had those two seasons switched around in my head. Seems like the 4 win season was just yesterday.

I know we all think we can do better, but there probably is something to the idea that it's a hard job, especially in the heat of the moment.

The reality is that Kirk earns 99% of his paycheck on 353 days out of the year, but we only see the results on those other 12

I wonder if KF's record of 7-3 is better against any of the B1G teams we play every season in the same time frame?
