Ferentz going after PSU players

Guess we all are learning a bit more about Tim Beckman. Whether it is within the NCAA rules or not, he's crossed the line IMHO. I could more easily believe some of these recent PSU recruiting stories if they involved programs outside the BIG but cannibalizing one of your own to the degree Beckman has chosen is tasteless.

What say you, Mr Delany?

Mr Delany will say nothing.
He is a stooge.

The NCAA should disallow contact between September 1 and the BCS title game. Then they can start recruiting them after the season. No need for it to occur in-season.

Not only did the NCAA not disallow that, they did just the opposite. Players may transfer penalty-free at any point before the start of the 2013 season. That means that if PSU starts 2-4, players can jump ship and be immediately eligible to play for another team for the second half of the 2012 season.

False.

Penn State football student-athletes can decide to transfer from now until the 2013 season (before participating in preseason practice with Penn State) and play immediately at the new school.

OR

Student-athletes who transfer during the 2012 season and have not competed for Penn State during that season will be immediately eligible for competition upon transfer, provided they are admitted under the normal process and are otherwise eligible per NCAA regulations. Student-athletes who transfer during the 2012 season after having competed for Penn State will not be eligible for competition during the same season at the next institution.

I guess I misunderstood the article I read on ESPN yesterday. It is only players that don't see PT for Penn St this year that are eligible to transfer midseason.

I think this will be really difficult for any of the players, since they have to be otherwise eligible. I don't know of too many schools that will allow someone to come into classes after 3-5 weeks

I see it differently, I see it as him not doing what everyone wants him to do which everyone around him are PSU players and fans.

I have no idea what he means but I re-watched his highlights and he is very very good. Best RB on IA's campus immediately, IMO. Malik Golden would be very good also. WR or RB. Wow-Grt class last year for PSU.

Actually, that wouldn't work. Look up the Cal Tech case. They had students who were monitoring classes for the first few weeks before they decided which courses to take. Ended up bringing a big hammer from the NCAA.

Reading this, which is a quote from the NCAA linked above, it seems to me that a PSU player could even play this fall at PSU and then transfer w/o penalty. That seems strange, and it could have bad consequences for PSU if they don't perform well this season.

Note Bold above: you play, you can transfer immediately but you can NOT play that same year.

So...do they play EVERYONE who stays on the team during that first game? Seems the sleaziest way to apply pressure for them to stay, but possibly effective if the players aren't thinking things through.

I'm not sure that this would stop them from transferring after this season and playing immediately next season without sitting. The rule only states "same season."

This is why I think things could get hairy for PSU.

I have to imagine a good portion of the respect coming from Bill O'Brien to Ferentz maybe more preconceived stemming from coaching on the Patriots with Brian Ferentz as offensive coaches and the overall Belicheck/Ferentz connections. Maybe gives Iowa a better chance than other schools at landing a PSU transfer.

Correct, it would not stop them from playing somewhere else AFTER this season. I was thinking more along the line of a lower level player who might assume he would not play early in the schedule and thus would have longer to make a decision to leave and finish the season somewhere else (if he could find an open spot). Meaning, that if he played in the first game he could conceivably never play another down for Penn St. and still not be eligible to play midseason at another school. That's taking a chance for sure.

They're probably there looking for a better job.

Lol, too funny. Maybe they are looking for Joe's statue so they can use it during games. Whenever their offense comes on the field they can turn Joe so he is pointing at the endzone and that way they will know where it is.
