Fant - Effort issues continue?

Iowa HAS to be in the top ten for producing offensive linemen. That was a whiff by ESPN on the list.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Where would you put Iowa ? I don't know exacrly what the criteria was Iowa produces a lot of serviceable starters(not a bad thing).but not many all-pros. If you are going by the sheer number of guys drafted then I wonder where Iowa falls in at.

Imagine how good this guy could have been if he had actually given some effort during his three years in Iowa City.

Brandon Scherff and Marshall Yanda have been more than serviceable starters. And James Daniels may not be far behind. If Riley Reiff and Bryan Bulaga are considered serviceable they are on the high end of serviceable. Austin Blythe as well. Now starts a long list of those who have been serviceable, led by Robert Gallery, Eric Steinbach, Bruce Nelson, Ross Verba, Casey Weigmann and Mike Goff (the last three if you want to go into the late Hayden Fry years.)

I haven't read the article yet, but, in NFL circles, four programs are always mentioned when it comes to offensive linemen - Notre Dame, Boston College, Wisconsin and Iowa.

It wasn't that long ago that one service had Yanda rated as the best guard in the NFL, and Bulaga as the best right tackle. That was pretty amazing.

Bulaga's not the same player he once was, but he's still solid when healthy.

Scherff and Daniels are big up-and-comers, and Wirfs and Jackson will no doubt be high draft picks.

Just happened to be watching ESPN at lunch and Chris Mortensen was on and they were talking Broncos (since they play tonight) and he said Denver signed an undrafted FA from Wyoming at TE that is doing as good or better than Noah Fant thus far. Is that good or bad, I don't know.

Looking at the roster, they're loaded with tight ends...some are familiar names to Iowa fans. With a 53 man roster, they'll cut or practice roster half of em by Aug 31. Teams usually roster 6 WR and 3 TE.

Fant
Jake Butt (Michigan)
Austin Fort (the free agent from Wyoming)
Troy Fumagali (Wisconsin)
Jeff Heuerman (Ohio State)
Bug Howard (North Carolina)
Moral Stephens (Florida)

It was Austin Fort who Mort said was tearing it up in camp so far.

I mean, Fant is a lock for the roster anyways. You don't drop a first round pick and equivalent contract on a guy and then cut him in his rookie preseason camp.

IMO Fant is a tiny bit of a project. He's been so used to getting by on pure athleticism alone that he suffered somewhat in his ability to make contested catches or adjust to the ball, and being an average but serviceable blocker.

He may get competition this year from someone who's a little more technically polished, but he'll still be a big role player and once he develops a little more will be far and away the best TE on the roster.

The way you wrote that sentence it seems you dont think he gave much effort on any plays at Iowa. I think he gave a lot of effort and most fans couldnt determine when he eased up. But the coaches can replay downs over and over and see where effort is lacking.

Has it ever been determined 100% that Fant sat sometimes in key parts of games because of a lack of effort.

The USA Today Sports section had a nice blurb on Fant and said how important he will be to the Broncos passing game this year in today's paper.

I've been looking for the clip where they showed him blocking and talked about how great of a blocker he became at Iowa.

Collinsworth was very complimentary of Iowa. He basically said that he's amazed at how much improvement in blocking players make within the program.

I thought Fant looked tight and a bit overwhelmed, which is to be expected somewhat. He dropped one easy pass, and failed to relax and get to his spot on another.

Some players have big motors, other are content to idle and coast.

Some players put team first, others live in a me first world.

Some players take pride in being professionals, others go through the motions.

Some players have learned maturity from their families, others have learned to be self absorbed takers from their families.

Great teams are filled with team first professionals.

He deserved a mulligan on the dropped pass. Sure he was nervous.
