expectations.

You are confusing the media with the fans...ask any fan that has met Kirk in person.

How many fans would question Ferentz on any of his coaching snafus, or even get a chance to, in person? His reaction would most likely be quite different than when some adoring fan gets a chance to meet him.

I met Steve Alford in person, too. He was very friendly and took pictures with my son...Not comparing the two at all, but just because Ferentz is friendly to fans that swoon all over him means nothing.

Nobody questions whether Ferentz is a gentleman and a nice guy. It's his coaching ability that is under fire.

Point...missed.

I think both of you are correct.

Sometimes ya need some bounces...AND...the harder you work the luckier you get.

^^this is the best explanation. Clark and Hawkdrummer1 are arguing some way too philosophical points.

Athletics are a mental exercise and full of physical performance and behaviors. By definition humans cannot replicate the same performance over and over so they are going to drop passes, fumble etc. But I dont put those in the "Luck" category. Those are human performance and mental mistakes.

But luck does come into the equation when you imagine the 5 or 6 major turning points in a game where a fumble is made and the ball could land just so that it rolls out of bounds and the fumbling team keeps possession OR the fumble rolls the other way and stays in bounds. That can be thought of as a 50-50 bounce type of thing. But the players still need to be performing to recover the ball that is inbounds. Same thing with tipped passes and fans who say "oh my gawd we were inches from catching that tipped pass for a game winning pick". But the answer in that situation is not "Luck" but the player just couldnt get to the ball.

Wind blowing the FG attempt of course, a punt taking a bounce good or bad for your team, these are Luck type situations. And there can be a few times in a game where luck plays a part.

My expectations change each year based on schedule and who we return.

My expectations were 6 to 7 wins this year. I will expect more next year with what appears to be an easier schedule and more experience at the QB position.

I call BS. Iowa should ALWAYS strive to win a national chamionship. Why go for 8. Lets go for 13. Our fans are weak. "Oh. we made the Gator Bowl. We get to go to Florida." BS. We should be trying to win it all. Thats what it is about.

You're welcome to strive for whatever you want. I didn't say the team shouldnt try to win every game and the players Should believe they have a chance in every game.

I am talking about fan expectations. Call bs all you want. You're welcome to your expectations...champion.

classic.

You DO know the difference between fan's expectations and team's expectations don't you? YOu really think that somehow the team is hindered by a fan out there with expectations of 7 wins?

People are forgetting the realities of the 2010 season if they think the 2010 team should have won ten games. If they would have stayed healthy I would say yeah but the linebackers were injured and not very good all year. The injuries on the line killed the team the second part of the season.
Another excuse.. You realize that other teams also have to deal with injuries..right?

Its what I deem reasonable expectations. The salary topic is irrelevant... but continues on nonetheless.

How in the hell can the salary involved with this mess be irrelevant? You damn right we expect more when we pay more..
Ferentz makes 3.7 million, and has great facilities to work with. If our "reasonable expectations" are for Iowa to win 7 games a year, then I would say we should not be paying a 10 win per year salary.
Northern Ill. coach makes $375,000. Ferentz was out coached in that game at Kinnick. I expected a helluva lot more.
Are you saying you don't expect more of Ferentz? .

from now on, when ever we talk about iowa football expectations - especially when we talk about high expectations in August we all need to remember to put an asterisk next to "Ten + wins" and the footnote will read*. Because that's football.

* Assuming they stay healthy.

I'm saying it's irrelevent, because it is. It'd be great if you could pay for wins, but you can't. His contract is based on the past, not the present, not the future...much like all contracts.

Not trying to troll at all with this, but isn't it a little hypocritical to indicate how far Iowa has recently fallen yet set a 7-8 win season as a the absolute minimum they'd be satisifed with?

I'm not one that goes in to a season saying anything less than "x" amount of wins is unexceptable or a disappointment, but I don't see how posters can say OSU and Michigan (in the past but not there yet) are the elite programs and we've fallen behind PSU, Wiscy, MSU, Northwestern, and Nebby yet somehow expect us to win 7-8 games a year at the same time.

Not flaming by any means, but if we've truly been passed up by those programs and most season we'd most likely see say 5 of those 7 teams then I don't see how not meeting the 7-8 teams can be such disappointment.

I'm still optimistic that the ship will right itself, and feel that we havent' fallen as far as some believe. That said though, if we've fallen as far as those truly believe then how can we honestly set our goals at winning between 7 & 8 games every year. Again, not trolling but I see that logic hypocritical.

Sure. But as Hayden pointed out in his book, teams like OSU have much more depth than Iowa and therefore, are less affected as a team by injuries. At least until they play in a BCS game.

Wrong.

While the past serves as a negotiating platform for the contract, the future is very much part of it. Rather than go philosophical, I'll just refer to the contract itself. He has cash incentives for future performance standards like # of wins, Big Ten championships etc.

Not Wrong. You making a point about the wrong thing.

salary...which is what is bittched about constantly and what we are talking about...yet...again.. No one gives a hoot about future incentives...as they are based on performance.

So...no...sorry....I am not wrong. Salary is Irrelevent for expectations...because base salary will be the same regardless...Per Contract.

Cripes

If we can atleast make a bowl this yr I will be happy. But I agree with a few of you that the Ferentz era might be coming to an end.
