ESPN Weekend Picks

I also like the timing of IA playing at OSU because of Fran's back from suspension, it's Aaron's home state, Basabe always play well against OSU (coming off a good confidence boost), and others are hungry after 3 close losses. I think the team has enough of playing not to lose. Plus, it's on national television (CBS) since 2006 for IA and it's a first for Fran playing on CBS (other than March Madness times).

I'm also thinking we were getting destroyed last year and then came out of nowhere late to make a game of it. We have to avoid getting way down early...don't see that happening with this team.

Does anyone think they could put Craft on Marble and Scott on Gesell? If I remember right from the Mich St game, Scott guarded Appling, while Craft was on Gary Harris (their best player).

Both Craft and Scott are very good defenders, so it wouldn't matter much. But I think it's a possibility.

If so, Marble can post up that little turd and maybe (gasp) draw a foul or two.

I agree with some of the posters above, I don't think it makes a difference. Both are close to the same height and both great defenders. I do wish that Fran would post up Marble more often because 1) he has good post moves and usually scores 2) he is a mismatch for most 2 guards.

One other note, if Iowa plays scared, they lose. No reason to play that way though, OSU is a paper tiger so far.

SO totally agree. And even though these guys should be long past this, I'm wondering if that is the problem at the charity stripe, especially since most of them have now missed a few. All it takes is a good free throw shooter to start thinking, "I can't miss this," and very often he will.

We win the way good Iowa teams are supposed to - being scrappy, out-working the Buckeyes, getting the 50-50 balls, and doing all that for 40 minutes (for once).

the real question is how will this game be called? will the refs let Craft be physical on D? if so, i really don't like Iowa's chances. if the refs call it even, i think Iowa has a great chance. really, really tough to win games like this on the road though. would be nice to have one of these at home earlier in the year instead of later.

Oh, let's not start whining about the refs and their anti-Iowa bad calls yet. That's our standard fall-back, and no better now than it was when we were kids. The old "that's not fair" whine.

Home teams get the breaks on ref calls. Almost always. Almost universally. Just expect it. Suck it up. It is how it is. But outplay the other team on their home court enough and that advantage to the home team gets wiped out. And then when we have the home court advantage AND the ref's calls going our way, it's real nice.

Guard play decides this game. Whoever wins the matchup in the backcourt most likely wins. Have to take care of the ball and not over dribble, which tends to happen with this team every once in awhile. If they don't take care of the ball Ohio State's guards will take advantage of it.

This is exactly right. I watched the OSU-MSU game, OSU can apply some serious pressure on the opponents guard play. Now, they get away with alot of physical stuff, but it's smothering if you don't have guys with good handles. I worry more about Sapp than Gessell handling it. Don't be surprised if you see Uthoff bring the ball up the floor once in awhile. He can handle it.

That being said, I think you need to get Marble down low against these guys. I think he's going to be stronger down there especially if Craft is on him.

Uthoff can't handle pressure with his high dribbling. I feel better with Marble, Gesell, Clemmons, and Oglesby (in this order as well) against such defense.

Sorry, Hawkzilla but facts will be facts. I accept that home team gets the calls. I even accept this is especially the case in the B1G. However, the biased officiating will be even more amplified since we're dealing with one of this season's darlings -- fOSU and the Aaron Craft idolization. It is what it is but don't deny what it is.

Craft will maul Iowa and walk away with 2 fouls. Meanwhile, Hawks will have 2 guys foul out.

I think this one gets ugly, early, and officiating will have a huge impact on that outcome. fOSU 77 - Hawks 65.

Feel like I'm being contradictive because I've said we just need to win at home and streak one or two on the road from the real good teams.... But this one feels big.

I'm getting pumped. I mean if we could pull it off and then beat Minny at home, we'd have a shot to make some jumps in the rankings over a 2 week period.

I look at the matchups and I originally thought mike g was going to have to have a good game but I'm starting to think its marble. At 6'6" he has to take advantage of the 4 or 5 inch height advantage he will have depending on who they put on him. I don't think OSU will want to play zone because then they lose the ball pressure they thrive on in their man to man.

The other key is 3 point shooting. We have to defend the 3 well. OSU doesn't shoot it that well but I still fear them getting on a nice streak. In the game against Purdue I saw them put a run together with about 3 three pointers in a row from crafts penetration and dishes.

Iowa's depth versus OSU's athleticism....Should be a good game.....The boys better be pumped and damn ready to play...They will need all 40 minutes....

There is certainly hope that we can win and I would love to see it happen. With that said;

Craft will eat Sapp alive.

The game will be decided by how well we defend Ross and if Woody/Olaseni can hold up against Williams. I will go on record early to say that if McCabe plays more than 5 minutes at the C position, we will lose.

Ummmm, yeah. 0/6 and getting owned on the inside.....just sayin'. Points in the paint while Woody/Olaseni in the game is the difference right now.

Oops what? He was getting owned and had a horrible offensive game. Fortunately the coaches went big at the 5:57 mark and stayed big the rest of the way (for once). The kid can play, he's got great heart and passion, but what he has in passion he lacks in size. It really sucks because he is truly one of my favorite players to watch. He reminds me of Settles and Brunner but is simply too short to play the C.
