Erik Campbell Leaving Iowa

The person who told me Soup was leaving a month ago or so thought it was Soups decision to leave. This is speculation on his part, not 100% confirmed, but he thought Soup was not happy with GD coming back as OC again.

Not sure if he didn't like GD himself, or his scheme or just disappointed he didn't get the OC position

FWIW

My guess would be a combination of all three with the latter having the most weight.

Also... it doesn't give me a real boost of confidence to hear the assistants have that much of a dislike for the new offensive coordinator and/or his system.

Same old ho', new dress.

I mean, why does a team that runs 3 yd outs all day even need a WR coach?

I dont belive he left on his own for one second. However Im sure KF would try to help him get another Job. Interesting he hasnt found one yet.
I know you probably won't say your source's name but is your source on the team, staff or friend/relative to someone on the team or staff?

Maybe he has but the "other job" hasn't been announced yet but maybe not, I don't know but I hope he finds success where ever he goes.

Or I am guessing that Brian Ferentz told him (Powell) to not talk about it until Iowa makes it public so that they can let the other recruits know as well so that there isn't issues like the one with Malik Rucker who didn't know yet that Soup was out but heard it on twitter.

The way KF would normely handle something like this is to anounce the coach is leaving for another position and thank him for all he has done. This has been in the works for a while. They just couldnt keep it under raps any longer. Its always possible there is a good reason he cant annouce a new position yet.

This is what has me puzzled as well. The GD project was a complete bust, why bring him back for another year? Soup is a good coach and sad to see him leave.

I think i mentioned as much detail about my source as i can when i first put on here that Soup was leaving. I have a very close relative who is involved with the fb program on a daily basis. Really can't get much more detailed then that, sorry.

I understand, thanks for sharing.

Yeah I don't know this seems odd. Hopefully we will find out more details as time goes on.

I think we're currently at our max for coaches, and the changes regard Campbell and Hernandez have us at a net zero. So unless someone else leaves we can't bring any other coaches aboard (right?), which leads me to a couple possible conclusions:

1) KF is planning on coaching the OL himself (unlikely scenario)
2) There are more changes coming because we have a hole at the OL coach position

I don't think it's a stretch to think that #2 is a more likely scenario.

I can't think of too many cases where major assistant merry-go-rounds helped turn things around. Actually can't think of any.

Daddy Mack at Texas changes more often than you think, it just isn't publicized a lot except when teams have well, a not great year. Most of the time this actually hits the press or media is when a coach is becoming a hot seat candidate, or is on the hot seat and it is a last ditch effort to extend his career for another year.

Was Campbell really that good? Yes, McNutt and DJK were pretty good (not elite). But there seem to be quite a few others who can't consistently get separation and/or consistently catch the ball.

I am still not sure that I think BF will be WR coach...I wonder if the kid misunderstood something there. We'll see

I agree. BF might end up with increased responsabuilty and GAs helping. But would be surprised if he gives up the OL position

Boy, seems like yesterday Campbell announced he was coming to Iowa from Michigan & we all thought we were getting the best thing since sliced bread. Then came DJK & McNutt, back-to-back & were very productive. Now last years train wreck. I wonder if it is more of GD's screwed up system of the "option run routes" that had to do with it more than anything. Receivers couldn't get separation, were confused & never never got on the same page with Vandenberg. They needed to scratch the "option routes" & just run hard routes so everyone knew where they were going & Vandenberg knew where they were going to be. I'm not sold it was more of Campbell's lack of teaching then GD's screwed up offense.

Seriously, do young HS players & their parents really know anything about the Ferentz boys outside the state of Iowa. How much pull do they really have with young players in Florida, Texas, etc.. To them, it's just another recruiter paying them a visit, IMO.

This program is really turning into a mess & now it is getting hard to sell it to recruits. This worries me. This and the fact that Kirk F is so loyal, which can be almost a fault of his. Maybe Campbell will go to Arkansas with Brett Biliema?

Kevin Kasper was here before Ferentz got here, i.e not recruited by KF.

I don't think Stanzi took a live snap, but I could be wrong.

Kevin Kasper was recruited by Hayden's staff and Ricky has yet to take a snap in a regular season game and with the #1pick in next year's draft and Andy Ried as the new coach I would be surprised if Ricky is even on the Chiefs roster.

I checked and I couldn't find any stats on CJ so I am pretty sure he never caught a ball. Feel free to do the research.

I find it incredibly remarkable that in 14 years these two incredibly important skilled positions have no representation from Iowa and specifically KF. Especially given we supposedly ran a pro-style offense for 13 of those.

That is bad. Really bad.

Other than Shonn Greene how many KF recruited/coached running backs are/were represented in the NFL?

This is an indictment on recruiting and development. More so recruiting I would think when it comes to skilled players.

I also believe KF is overrated when it comes to the success of his offensive lineman in the NFL.
All three acclaimed left tackles were busts in the NFL at that position. FWIW,
