Eli Carter or bust?

With Guerrero going to OK State, does that mean we're going to put all our resources into Carter? Personally, I've really liked Carter as more of a complete player than our other PG prospects even though Guerrero is a flashy scoring PG. Don't forget Carter is ranked by Rivals #22 PG and #109 overall. He's already taken 4 official visits, so he can only take one more. Scout shows no offer, but my guess is we have by now.
Scout also just released an article saying Olaseni and Katenda are setting up visits, but I have no insider info as to who or when.
Personally I think we should focus our efforts on Carter and Olaseni or possibly Katenda. I know we were looking at Stokes but have cooled and Washpun, but grades and overall talent could prevent an offer.
What do you think we are/should be doing?

I forgot to mention Phillip Miller from Texas too, but we have to wait and see if he passes his tests, and I'm not sure if we would wait that long. Also there's Hubbard, but I'd really rather have a PG and big man for next year.

I realize Carter can visit, but he hasn't visited Iowa City yet to my knowledge, so I don't know if that speaks real well in terms of his interest in Iowa. He has about a month to do so, so hopefully we get his last visit.

At the risk of repeating myself, why do you guys keep getting so hyped for top recruits? They ain't coming to Iowa! We won 11 games and are sitting at home right now!

When Fran rebuilds this program, he is going to have to use under-the-radar kids with a big chip and a ton of heart, because top 150 kids are not going to want to play for a team in the midwest that has been mediocre since they were in third grade.

There is no quick fix here.

Now that Cezar is dead on the Ides of March, we need to convince Carter that we're his vehicle to greatness.

BS.

If all of these recruits "ain't coming to Iowa", then why were we in Cezar's Top 2? He clearly was considering us. Depends on what you define as a top recruit. If you mean 5* recruits, then no - we are in no position to land those guys. But Cezar was considered a 3-4* type of player from all I've read.

He was a top 150 player who rejected us for a team in the NIT.

Keep in mind I say this in the context that Iowa fans have summarily rejected the talents of Kyle Meyer based on 20 seconds of film from when he was 15, saying that they don't think he can help us. Me thinks as long as we are winning 11 games, we should expect more under the radar guys like Meyer than top 150 guys like Guerrero.

Iowa fans, here at least, seem to think that there is a quick fix to five years in the cellar, and that it is a failure of we can't attract top talent! My point is we should stop obsessing over the Guerreros of the world, because they will almost always go to greener pastures.

I also am just not all that concerned about PG. That is, unless Cully is just not going to be able to contribute and then Fran should realize that and cut his losses. If Cully is going to be able to contribute, he will be a nice utility guard off the bench.

Iowa really needs a perimeter scorer and a big. Each will reduce the ability of teams to double Mel. People talk about Cartwright graduating after next year. Yes, he will. But this team needs help NOW!

Get those players now and go after a starting PG for 2012.

Just a small edit: until we get ourselves off the ground with the underrated players, we probably aren't going to land many (if any) top 150 recruits that are from outside of Iowa. Oglesby is a top 150 guy, and the word has been that we have a pretty solid shot at Woodbury (by no means a lock, but it's no long shot either).

But we won't pull in out of state top 150 guys without first getting up off the canvas.

Farmgirl,
5 years ago, Iowa tied for 4th in the league at 9-7,to be factual.
4 years near the cellar...accurate. Iowa has managed to avoid the cellar even as bad as it has been the last 4 years.

So, you are saying on message boards that are created for fans to speculate about stuff like recruiting, that fans should eliminate their enthusiasm, and speculation when top recruits visit Iowa? That Iowa fans should not be allowed to even dream of a successful outcome when top recruits come to visit Iowa? You seem to obsess about fans obsessing. Do you even follow Iowa sports,or just come here to play the devils advocate on an hourly basis. Do you have a life? I chuckle when you mock fans who come on here, driven by their love of Iowa athletics...and yet here you are driven by what exactly? A need to mock? At least most folks on here are actually fans of the school, and their teams...it is an Iowa bb message board afterall. What is really mystifying is why someone like you that is not here for that purpose would waste their time coming here at all.

Don't you worry about Iowa fans ''obsessing'' about top recruits taking a pass,we are pretty used to it by now. Meanwhile, maybe you can compile a list of recruits that Iowa fans will be ''allowed '' to be enthusiastic about?

I would be flat shocked to see Woodbury go anywhere but Iowa. And in regard to not getting top talent, Greg McDermott brought in Brackins and Garrett, both top 150 guys, during his first season as head coach. I flat out reject the thought that you can't get top 150 guys into your program until you start winning. That said Fred isn't doing it either unless you count the transfer route.

That said, on another note, I think it's very interesting that you guys are going after Carter as he goes to the Brewster Academy. ISU has some deep inroads at Brewster and if you guys got a pipeline there as well we could have some interesting recruiting battles. It seems like for the first time in a while we have the potential to both be targetting the same kids for a while and the funny thing is they might all be on the east coast. Just funny how that works.

Washpun has qualified according to Barnstormers and will be visiting Clemson. If Fran is really interested in Wes, he better not wait too long. I really like his size, athleticism and quickness as a pg. Imo, Wes would be a very good backup for Bryce and Cully next year which would give him time to improve his shooting and pg skills before he would see major time. You can't teach the athletic capabilities he brings to the table.

Seems like more and more schools are raiding Iowa for players.

And how many touranment games did ISU win after landing a couple of top 150 players?

I am not going to say that we don't want them, but they are certainly not what we need to build the program. To put it best I can, I am in love with the process, not the players. I am willing to wait a few years, to get decent (if unspectacular) players, and let them learn their roles and build as a team.

I don't understand why Woodbury doesn't commit early so he can help in convincing other players to come.
