Eli Carter - do we even have a chance now?

If we bring in zero more commits next years team is already better than this years team. The reason why some of the kids are in Iowa City is because Fran and staff are busting their humps. Are you going to fault the guy for going after big names then not getting them all ?

What I don't get is when people refer to a recruit's offers, and they say something to the extent of "I think he's going to (insert school here) in my opinion." Whether a person does something or not is not a matter of opinion. I can't say "in my opinion Steve will drink a glass of water tonight." Either Steve drinks the glass of water or he doesn't. The same goes for whether a kid decides to go to Iowa or not to go to Iowa. The sentence just doesn't make sense.

Second, who are we to try to predict what a kid is thinking anyway? Unless we are the kid, have been speaking to him/her regularly about the topic, or are omniscient, 17-year-olds are quirky. We could lay out all the logical reasons in the world why it MAKES SENSE for someone to go somewhere, but in the end we don't know which deciding factors are the most salient. In the end, unless we're connected to the kid somehow, we really have no say in the process (unless you're a total stalker, and in that case I disown you as a Hawkeye fan), and all we really can do is sit back and wait for Jon to report the info.

p.s. I can't stand it when the only thing someone can think to post is "I would really like to see (recruit's name here) come to Iowa"

"BrewsterHoops Brewster Basketball Latest schools to contact @EliCart3r are: Oklahoma, Pitt, Providence, Rutgers, Tennessee, and about 10 others I can't recall at this moment"

Think we are out of the running now. We don't stand a chance. Plus Washpun picked up Tennessee offer too. OUCH!

We are viewed nothing more than a low-major program to these kids anymore. Butler, UNI, Creighton, VCU, Dayton, Belmont, etc. are all better programs to play for than Iowa. Sad reality and it is very frustrating. How do we get better if all we get are role players and fall backs?
The answer to your question is that we (iowa) want kids that WANT to come to Iowa. It is going ot take a special kid to come to Iowa and work at this rebuilding. (with the right players this team can take off) As far as I see it if they don't come here than fine. Yes it's hard watching them sign else where but if they are that afraid to walk into Iowa and actually have to work then it's not that big of a loss. Basabe is special, Cartwright is special and any other kid that signs with Iowa is going to sign for the right reason. It's not like Fran and his crew are not working their butts off becuase we know they are. I only hope that there are at least 2 special kids that want to come to Iowa city, endure the weather, endure not winning all the games but have a fan base that loves them, that supports them and plus they get a darn good education and an oppurtuity to play big 10 BB under a HC that has a passion!

Honestly what the problem is, is that we have sucked with recruiting for so long that until someone proves they can change that mentality I will continue to expect this and will continue to complain about it. And this class isn't going to change that perspective...YET! It's basically apathy.

I edited your post for you. Your welcome.

What are you, the internet police?

People can say they think a recruit is going to (insert school). For the same reason that I don't think Carter is going to end up in Iowa City. Are we saying that it's iron-clad fact that a recruit will or won't do something? No. We simply say what we think they will do. That's the definition of speculation. And since the word 'speculation' is in the dictionary, I'd say that it makes sense.

Is it stupid to try and predict that kind of stuff? Sure. But you're on a message board. If what you DON'T want to see is baseless speculation, then you might as well pack up and steer clear of any sports message board.

Irony is when something negates itself. Meaning someone intends to elicit one response, but their actions bring about the opposite response. Your post is the height of irony.

In trying to sound wise in your critique of Hawkeye message board posters, you end up making yourself look like a fool. Assumption is "opinion" based on an assessment of available fact. Netflix the first season of "The Good Wife." there is an episode that illustrates how federal judges expect attorneys to state, "in my opinion" everytime they make an assumption from the available facts. They do not need to do this when stating a fact, only when offering an interpretation of the meaning of that fact.

I will give you an example. Player A receives a scholarship each from school A and B. School A has not been very successful lately in both play and recruiting. Additionally, the coach from school B has been recruiting player A for much longer, and school B is in a much more desirable weather location. Finally, player A has had academic difficulties and school B says it can assure player B that it can keep him eligible to play basketball, when school A has a history of players not remaining eligible. Based on these facts, "in my opinion" player A will choose school B. Now is that fact? No. Is it a reasonable assumption based on the facts? Yes.

If you aren't a little bit worried about the recruiting situation, you are either wildly optimistic or delusional. Sure there is a chance this all works out and we get a guard + Olaseni and Katenda or Hubbard, but there is also a scenario where we get none of these dudes. IMO, we are closer to getting 0 than 2 of 3.

I think it is safe to say that if we get dissed by Washpun, we are going to be in full blown scramble mode for a PG. I had hoped the Purdue victory would serve as a springboard, but not so much I guess.

lets just face the Real Truth about IOWA basketball.. IT WILL NEVER AGAIN REACH THE LEVELS IT WAS AT UNDER DOC. TOM!!! the glory days are OVER and have been for years.. if you fools cant realize that i feel sorry for all of you... Ryno is right to be concerened!!

Iowa as a University is viewed as a football and wrestling school... basketball is a secondary sport... so dont expect to get many of the best recruits even if they are in the state of iowa... aka Barnes, Paige, Hinrich, LaFrentz, bohannon..boy i could go on for days

It's fine to be "concerned" about recruiting...but the constant Chicken Little mentality of some of you is laughable...there's a difference between being "concerned" and being "the end is here" guy...

By the way Sideshow, congrats...you make Ryno look like an optimist...well done!

I guess Fran and Co. should just go ahead and pack it in. Maybe we should send them a copy of this post just so they know it's over.

Concern is one thing. I'm concerned about the state of the program, but my god. At least give McCaffery a couple of seasons before you pronounce the program dead.

I guess I also missed the memo about optimism and foolishness being the same thing.

Most college coaches unless it is North Carolina, Kansas, or Kentucky spend 2-3 yrs. getting to know high school athletes and developing a relationship with them. Fran and staff have lived in Iowa for 1 yr. They are working hard but it will take time, Tennessee signed one of the top point guards in the country, they are headed for at least 1 yr of sanctions, if Washpun still decides to go there I say good luck, the two kids that I would love to see Fran sign are Woodbury and Gessell.

This infatuation thing with Carter is silly. He takes 4 visits last year before November and does not commit. Then this twitter stuff with Iowa hints. Now a new set of schools on his list. The kid either doesn't have a clue or just wants to have fun playing a game with people. Move on cause its looking more like some decommit/transfer like Cully's situation or a JUCO PG.

You'd better hope it's not a transfer, because all of those guys are thugs.

The weird thing is the "face the facts, Iowa's never getting back" guy seems way more upset about recruiting than anyone else. If you think Iowa will never be good again, why get stressed out about the program? Seems like a fruitless exercise to me.

You know how some people get up in the morning and can't function til they've had their cup of coffee!?!? I think some can't function on a day to day basis without having something to b!tch about...and there's those whose favorite sports teams stopped being "entertainment" and a source of enjoyment, somewhere along the line and instead became the outlet for their angst and overall feeling of doom and gloom...it would be like going to a movie, b!tching about the price of the ticket and snacks and telling everyone around you that the movie's going to suck...

parking sucks too;)

This is going to be a multi year rebuilding effort. Lets face up to the fact we got ourselves so far down that it will be a couple years before we are dancing again. Also put this into perspective. ..we only have 2-4 scollies in each class. If we offer 20+kids we will miss more often than we hit. lets not melt down every time we get second.

Everyone wants the pretty girls but often the plain janes will work harder for you.
