Don't Expect Any Protests During National Anthem from Hawkeyes

Nobody and I mean nobody has the right to question the loyalty of anybody living in this country. This is a free country and everybody inside it's borders has the right to self determination guaranteed them in the Constitution.

Treason and other unlawful acts against the country are specifically outlined in the Constitution. When people commit treason or knowingly commit unlawful acts against this nation they are held accountable.
The POTUS should be informed that not standing for the national anthem is not among them.

One other thing, as long as they are not infringing on the rights of others, they don't have to be right to use their rights afforded them under the Constitution to protest or show their dislike for a policy or action taken by others in which they disagree. And just because the majority is in agreement on something that doesn't automatically make it right. The Constitution was written to protect the minority against an over stepping majority.

I am well aware that most of you know all this and do not need a lecture on what the Constitution is all about. It's just to damn bad the President doesn't.

I knew the risk but I felt it important to write a news story localizing this issue especially after it was addressed at Iowa State a day earlier.

It's actually an interesting topic if cooler heads prevail. I don't have a dog in this fight but the NFL owners are really caught in the middle of this thing. Do they hack off maybe 20-30% of their employees ... or do they blow off 65-70% of their fan base? The closest thing I can remember to this as far as a fan revolt was the last MLB strike. It took baseball 5 years to recover from that.

The thing is we all have this right so you have to accept it when others execise their right so you can go plant yourself on a street corner with a sign stating your ideas and exercising your rights. Sitting or taking a knew during the anthem is so calm compared to buring the flag yet the Supreme Court has twice upheld the right of citizens to burn the flag in an act of protest. And Justice Scalia even voted on the affirmative side.

the people who dont like what the NFL players are doing can go picket outside the stadiums, refuse to go to games, write letters to the editors, whatever.

Yeah, not sure the first amendment applies here, it has been upheld many times that you cannot say whatever you want in the workplace.

When Dennis Green was Head coach of the Vikings I went to my first NFL game. I think it was around 2001 or 2002.
We were in the end zone, so my angle for seeing this was perfect.
Tennessee Titans were all standing here and there along their sideline and about half had their hands on their heart for the anthem.
Green had his Vikings in a PERFECTLY straight line, with every player shoulder to shoulder and everyone I saw had their hands over their heart.
That line of players looked sharp, disciplined and tremendously respectful.
When I saw all the player demonstrations I thought how Denny Green (RIP) would respond if he were still coaching.

Politics runs deeper than sports. Ds and Rs and Independents blacks and whites and everyone in between can put those differences aside and come together as one and cheer for the same team -- or like a few knuckleheads here, hate on their favorite team.

Someone brings politics onto sports and the schism comes with it. Up until last season I watched every NFL game I could and had 4-6 fantasy teams. This year I've only watched KC and don't have any fantasy teams.

I go to church on Sunday to hear a sermon and for fellowship because I know it's good for me. I want to do that.

I watch sports because life also needs time away from reality -- without a sermon. I want to do that.

That "want to" means I can find other things to do besides watch pro football. I have.
The same will be true of college football.

Rob... This isn't a political argument... just setting the record straight.

The players... and none of us... have a constitutionally protected First Amendment right to do what they're doing. The First Amendment protects us from government retribution for speech they disagree with. There is no such protection in the private sector. These players could be fired and the courts would uphold it.

You aren't protected by the first amendment in your workplace. If these players really wanted to make a difference in our country or the communities where they think these injustices are taking place they have the means to do so but they do absolutely nothing. This goes for politicians on both sides as well. Taking a knee and disrespecting those who died to allow you the ability to make millions of dollars playing a game is misguided. Before the anthem or after the game if they want to make a show of unity have at it.
