Don't ever ask God to help you get revenge.

I have a little saying that i made up. It goes like this... Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers. Remember when you're talkin to the man upstairs. That just because he doesn't answer, doesn't mean he don't care. Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

lightning1, God will not give you any more than you can handle.....Good luck, my son....

Doc, I think he was just kidding around. He makes a lot of tongue in cheek comments in some of his post.

Actually if you look at Notre Dame's history over the past twenty years in both football and basketball given their HUGE fan base, financial wealth, and unfair recruiting network (NBC) their probably is not a more under achieving college sports program in this country.

I actually think their has been a lot of sarcasm in the origin of this thread and some of the comments made including my poor attempt at humor in my comments.

I can aopreciate you perspective on sports and praying for a victory and infact agree with it. I see nothing wrong however with people praying that no one gets seriously injured and that both teams and fans have safe travel to the game and home again. I'm am sure you would agree with that.
Thanks for your comments and like you I pray for no injuries, I also pray that the Hawks play the very best game each time out. I maybe over reacted. I am very strong in my faith and I've seen miracles in my life that doctors can't explain. I choose to believe in God and I am willing to help others if they are searching. If people choose not to believe in God they do have free will. I apologize to O'Keefe. It's just a subject I'm a little sensitive about. This forum is probably not the right place for discussions like this so I apologize to anybody I may have offended.

I made that mistake last Friday. I asked him to allow us to beat Gonzaga so that we could then beat the UCLA Alfrauds. I promised him I would return to church, etc. Let me tell you how that worked out for me.
Sunday morning, about 1 am, my wife's grandmother went into hospice. That's when the phone calls started. About 8:30 am, she passed away. Me and my wife sat in the hospice room for the better part of the day, waiting on family members visiting and paying their last respects. Oh yeah, did I mention Sunday was also my birthday?
In short: I spent my birthday with a corpse, in a hospice room, on zero sleep, while my phone blew up by well wishers for my birthday. Then I got to watch Iowa lose.
So, since God did not hold up his end and allow us to smite the Alfordstines, can I assume you wont be in church for quite a while?

And I disagree with Doc on this. I think every forum is the right place for this discussion. And those that disagree or have doubts are not only welcome in the conversation but invited to participate.

I don't think God spends much time on sporting events. If he spent time answering your prayers for a win he'd have to spend time answering an opponents for a win. I'm sorry for your loss. Sometimes when we lose someone close to us, while it's unfortunate sometimes you can sit back and think of the things they did and said you find out that person was more amazing than you thought. I hope you're comforted knowing she's in a better place.
God only has time to help Notre Dame win.

She was 92 and content to go. But thanks for your thoughts.

Seems to me this is about as good as you can hope for. Since you describe she was old and content, maybe this is how she may have wanted it, and it was actually a positive for her that day. The offset was that it sucks for you the Hawks lost on your birthday.

I bet GOD, nor you, had little to do with either event except to keep the give-n-take pendulum of life swinging.

Take care, man.

I was the one who started the thread Please...God...Please. Sorry for your loss.

Blessing in disguise, it may have been borderline inappropriate for you to be celebrating an Iowa win when you were with a corpse. So God was protecting you and he added the 20 point loss to ensure that your mind was in the right place. Plus, you never know, it might have been Gods will to have the Catholic boys from Gonzaga put a beat down on Alford.

I'd thumbs up you, but I don't want to take any chance of any of your luck spreading to me. ;)

What a crappy day that was. So sorry.

I wonder how many Catholics play for Gonzaga?

Probably about as many that play at Notre Dame..

You can't barter with God. But I have a question or 2.

Where was this the funeral held? Funeral home, hospice, a church?

Who did the service? funeral director, family friend, a paster/Reverend/ect.?

It's common tradition to pray for victory against another team in sports, especially in locker rooms . Honestly that's not very realistic, isn't it? I believe in praying for peace, love, kindness, wisdom, forgiveness, guidance from Holy spirit, understanding. I think God listen to that kind of prayers. and He will make your way better. No laws against these. (I'm sorry about your mother.)
I pray that you have strengths and wisdom and peace for you.

So what you're saying is that it is a numbers game. If we can just get more sport-crazed religious folk on our side than our opponents, we should be golden. Is the Athletic Department making any move on this?

Of course, first we need to figure out the right God to appeal to. We should probably spend most of our time with the common God of Judaism/Christianity/Islam (that is where the public money lies), but to be safe we should probably set up task-forces to work on some of the other major deities (oh Hinduism, why must you divide our forces so?). Maybe having a task-force working specifically on karmic good-will would also pay dividends.

p.s. - not belittling any of the serious aspect of your response, just having fun with the idea of competing with opponents for divine favoritism

Sorry to hear about your loss and the bad day you had.

Having said that I hope you don't do that again as I could be related to you....... Just kidding........but just incase have you done any genealogy lately? Please post ancestrial lineage. If I see a family link I may have to upgrade my life insurance. :)
Funny you should ask. I am the family genealogist and I have 1700 years worth of my family ancestry chronicled.

The funeral hasn't happened yet. She was in St Lukes Hospice Saturday night and she passed away Sunday morning. For some reason, a bunch of her sisters and nieces wanted to come up and say good bye to her before the hospital took her down to the morgue. It was weird, IMO but what can you do? So, we waited there until they trickled in to say "good bye".
The funeral will be held at a funeral home.
