Does the Tennessee offer to Washpun change things?

They are all projects alright. These kids have been playing since they could walk.

UConn started 3 freshmen, 1 soph and 1 junior

Are you serious about this "no redshirt" thing? I'm sorry but you don't really understand basketball then. For starters, good impact freshman do not go to schools that have a recent history of losing. Which Iowa has. Second, why waste a year of eligibility on him when he can ride pine, learn the system, and improve. Third, Iowa does need someone to play next year, a juco. and lastly, basketball players are projects, all of them. You, as a coach, are to improve them if you want to win. Iowa will not become good by getting 2 year players. Iowa will improve if Fran and the staff can bring in guys who are great athletically, and have some talent, and coach them up. You need to realize most programs redshirt, and being able to do that is a luxury. Would you rather have freshman come in and play every year over seniors who are bad? Or have 5th year seniors who are much more developed than the recruits coming in?

I don't like redshirting in basketball. You have committed one of 13 schollies to one kid for 5 years. Look at the red shirt to Archie, that hasn't turned out well. I say you learn as you go, even if you only get a few minutes a game and that's how you get better. Iowa needs players to play and get better, not sit on the bench, take up space and schollies for years to come.

I would LOVE to have Freshman that could come in and start over our seniors, means you are getting good freshman or you have terrible seniors.

I personally say don't waste one on Washpun if he isn't good enough. Get players that are, and if he is good enough for a scholarship then play him, don't red shirt him.

Fran disagrees with you. He said he will not recruit "projects" to Iowa.

In related news, it turns out Iowa has not offered Washpun.

"Washpun admittedly did struggle from the free-throw line. He hit just 52.2 percent from the floor — 82-of-157...and Washpun sank 25 percent of his 3-point shots this year."

Uh, this is not good from a point guard. If these stats are correct then he is a project. We can't afford a project point guard next season. Have to be better options.

I agree. He might be OK as a back up option but we need someone who will be able to be the starting point guard after Cartwright leaves.

I understand and agree with most of what has been said. But he also has the athleticism and explosiveness unlike any other players we have had siiiiiiiiiince, Ricky Davis? If they decide to offer and he decides to come, he can be an asset. He has work to do, for sure, but so do all of these other players.

He certainly has a LOT of upside.

Just my opinion on him not being ready to step in. Nothing against him, not sure there are many true freshman capable of stepping in as the #2 PG in the big ten. To me it's more a matter of what he brings to the table. Ok, he is athletic, so is May, but as we saw this past season, there is more too hoops than having hops. I don't know that I buy the excuse that outside of Ogelsby and Washpun, CR Wash had 4H and band members suiting up. Even if this true, Washpun should have torched some of the slower, less athletic kids guarding him, IMO.

It comes down to this: Either McCaffrey sees something he likes in Washpun and with Payne leaving, has room to bring him in OR we are circling the drain with Stokes, Carter, etc., and we need to lock somebody up.

Besides Larson and transfers, quickly name me five scholarship players who are redshirting from any team.

Sorry, but I don't think redshirting is as common as you think. I can't find current info, but in 2008 only 4 D1 scholarship freshmen redshirted for reasons other than injury.

But thanks for the comic relief. Always love a good dose of irony.

Since I have some friends who know Wes, I know his grades are not that good so honestly if he can't qualify for any school, going juco would be a good option for him and Iowa.

Really? What is your source for 'only four' number?

Wes is qualified and will play at D-I next year

As far as PG recruits go Washpun was clearly not a top target. He is not a very good shooter but you guys are underestimating him because he is a great athlete, ball handler and defender.

When he enters a game he will help with perimeter defense (we desperately need), be able to run the offense, and push the ball. He'd be good for at least 10 mpg. Then getting a second guard Carter/Jackson/Hubbard/Glover who could also pitch in at PG if needed would be big.

If Fran offers/offered him I'd feel pretty good about it

He should be able to learn a lot from Cartwright, who really improved last year, which I think Wes could do next year. And it skins like he has been a fan of Iowa all his life and is visiting thursday with hopes to deicide next week.

Sorry about the link, I don't know how to do it on mobile, and the article is free.

I'm beginning to think Fran and his staff have trouble closing the deal with recruits.

To date, Fran has received a committment from one recruit (Oglesby) with other BCS offers and he lived a few miles up the road from Iowa City.

Harris, Stokes, Katenda, Cezar, Carter, etc. No committments from anyone that has other options. And don't give me the "why would anybody come to Iowa" line. It's not like the powerhouse schools are our competition for these kids.

If this continues, Fran needs to re-evaluate his staff after the spring signing period. Recruiting will make or break Fran's tenure at Iowa. I hope he realizes this.

You will be run off the boards for saying stuff like this....be careful. I think with any fan base you have a subset of fans that will find a way to pump up the recruits they are getting. They will go as far as possible to downplay the accuracy of recruiting rankings, expert opinions, etc, etc. Flash back two years ago and everyone was irate that Cougill wasn't a top 150 player out of high school.

It's not hard to go back and look at the last 5-7 years of recruiting classes in the Big 10...for the most part the teams with the 4-5 star recruits are the ones finishing in the top half of the conference on average. It's not rocket science...recruiting is key.
