Does Iowa Get A Bowl At 6-6?

Let's see, the Hawks have been practicing for about 12 to 13 weeks now and I'm not seeing much improvement from the offense for an entire game.

It doesn't work like that. They are gameplanning for opponents during the week. Young players who don't play a lot especially don't see a ton of time on the practice field.

15 extra practices aren't really going to help juniors and seniors but they can do a lot for the freshmen and sophomores who haven't played much yet.

Frankly, I almost hope not. For one thing, I suspect the payout for whatever cheesy bowl Iowa would get invited to would be so small that it would actually cost the university money to ship the team, the band and all the freeloading functionaries to the game site. Then there is the question of the legendary fan support for the Hawks, which I feel would be tasked to the max by asking them to travel to a game site like Detroit to cheer on this lifeless program.

Big Ten pools bowl money. We'll be fine.

You really believe they don't spend a majority of the time game planning for the bowl opponent?

Any 6-6 team that gets a bowl game is like a kid receiving a participation trophy. It says be average and you'll be rewared. Unfortunately real life will hit them in the face with a different outcome.

Detroit rock city. We can all save money on hotels by staying in abandoned slum houses. Thousands to choose from, just take your pick

Wanna bet? If Iowa goes 6-6, there is zero chance of being in Detroit. Why do some fans insist on painting an unrealistic doom and gloom scenario....just to be kings of doom?

No, they don't spend a majority of the time doing that. How long do you think it takes to do that? I'd guess that it depends on the type of team you have and what bowl you're playing in. It would surprise me if they did much gameplan implementation in the first two weeks of bowl prep.

Now I'm sure the coaches do use the entire three weeks to study tendencies and devise a gameplan.

Sorry, I think the "extra practices" are overrated too. I'm sure they help to some degree, but let's take last year as an example; Assume we went to a bowl. The 15 extra practices wouldn't have helped Rudock or Beathard in the least.

It's insincere for this coaching staff to say the extra practices/reps are needed for player development but never let a back-up see the field during a game unless there is an injury.

I heard that the Pontchartrain Hotel is now closed. Awful. I think the RenCen and casinos are the only hope at this point. Where will the HN charter end up staying?

Gotta think enthusiasm for traveling to watch this team play is not very strong.

If I'm not busy at work, I would go to Detroit, but only because I could do the drive the day of. I sure wouldn't go to Florida or Texas to watch this tire fire of an offense.

It couldn't have hurt could it? Especially for Beathard.

The only way Iowa ever plays in Detroit is if that two win rule in standings locks them into it. No bowl is going to take Minnesota or NW over Iowa if given the chance

A bowl game is pretty huge for this team.. There is a lot of youth that could use the extra practice / game. Which imo, far outweighs any crap bowl they could possibly end up in.

I think there is a great deal of truth here that would be seen...a Texas Bowl and Iowa brings 5-7k from out of state, max.

Bowl trips are not cheap for the family.
I was there at the Outback Bowl after the 2008 season and there were quite a few empty seats on both sidelines.
Keep in mind, we missed out on a bowl in 2007 after the WMU turd, at home on senior day.
The Outback Bowl experience is best of any of the bowls I've been to (I've never been to the Rose)

I see fans traveling, but the University would eat a lot of tickets (mostly due to their insane add-on prices).
We'd have maybe 10K in Houston and maybe 15K in Jacksonville.

In 2007 the B1G filled its allotment of bowls, there were a few less bowls then. The only team that was NOT bowl eligible in 07 was 1-11 Minnesota. Iowa and NW were 6-6, everyone else had 7 or more victories.

This. Purdue finished behind Iowa in the conference standings at 3-5, but they were 7-5 overall. The Big Ten is going to have at least 4 teams sitting at home this winter (Penn State, Purdue, Illinois and Indiana), and with the way things are going for Northwestern right now, they might not make it either (they have to split Michigan/MSU to have a chance). Iowa SHOULD get to bowl eligibility this week. If they do, they're a lock to get in.

Awesome, There is someone I want to call an idiot, but can't without other people getting mad, so I will get my fix responding to you.

Your analogy is really flawed. You clearly have no understanding of Iowa's bowl prep process or their history under KF. A more appropriate analogy would be 2001. That team lost to Purdue, UM, MSU, Wisky, and ISU. They had 4 conference wins and skipped OSU. Know what happened the next season and what younger impact players got on the field?

Iowa spends the vast majority on bowl prep refocusing on fundamentals! The majority of their implementation of the game plan occurs once they get to the bowl location.

Oh yeah, I knew a number of players on the 2001 team. They appreciated being able to go to a bowl.

My only hope this year is that Iowa doesn't jump other teams and ends up playing an opponent that is far stronger. Give the men a chance to play a competitive game against a relatively equal opponent.

How soon they forget how bad it sucks to be in Iowa in winter

Probably about as bad as going to Detroit in December.. But it doesn't sound like from what I'm reading, that we'll have to worry about that scenario.

The beauty of living in FL is that any good bowl game, most likely will be in-state and I can simply drive to the game. I live in Tampa, so this is particularly true for any Outback invites. Or the Cap 1 - Orlando is about an hour from here. Even the Orange Bowl is an easy trip for me.

Most of the crappy bowls are out of state, so I am not likely to make a big effort to make it to any one of those. Now something like a Rose Bowl, I would have to seriously consider going out there.
