Does CJ Have a Legit Heisman Run?

Of course he would need to stay healthy. If he can, will he be in the talks at the end of the season? I was watching some of the BIG championship game this morning and Iowa's D was pretty darn good in that game. They actually looked pretty quick at times. If they play similarly this year and CJ plays healthy, this could bode well for Iowa. CJ played most the year banged up last year and was not completely able to show his mobility.

Iowa lost T. Smith, but in actuality, he never really put up that gaudy of numbers. Matt V. is back & led the team in receptions and George Kittle is back as well which will be key. I also think there is potential for a couple other young receivers to step up and they may be a solid group overall for CJ to work with. I think the running game will be pretty good to help keep the D's honest for CJ as well. I was just wondering if he has a healthy year with who all is coming back if he could be in the Heisman talk.

Could Desmond be in the talk as well, although, it's pretty rare for defensive players to win it anymore.

No, I am not HawkNick.

My Hawkeye heart says yes...

But my brain says no.

There's a bias toward players on teams that do two things:

1) Put up gaudy passing or rushing numbers. Iowa's balanced, pro-style attack and grinding run game that focuses on wearing a defense down rather than torching it on the outside makes this harder to do. The last QB to win the Heisman that was from a (sort of) balanced offense was probably Matt Leinart in 2004.

2) National championship contenders. While Iowa was in the hunt last season, repeating that is very very difficult.

On Desmond King:
The last defensive player to win the Heisman was Charles Woodson, nearly 20 years ago. King would have to put up record breaking interception numbers and/or return more than 4 punts/KOs for TDs. Preferably both. That said, I think King has a better chance than CJB of being a Heisman candidate.

All of that said:
- CJB, fully healthy, can play the role of the Cam Newton/Tim Tebow, which can be attention-getting.
- Last season gave Iowa a lot of attention, and the story line of CJ playing the whole season with a surgery-needing injury is a great "story" that commentators will latch onto
- Pass protection looked better this spring game than last season, and there are a slew of returning starters to the O-Line. CJ with more time in the pocket might give him what he needs to break things open and put up some of those "wow!" numbers.
- Desmond King is probably our best bet for a Heisman, particularly if he can repeat as Thorpe award winner.

The biggest threats to CJ's Heisman chances:
- Staying healthy
- Staying upright
- Receivers stepping up

No.
#1 Won't stay healthy all season
#2 QB's have to put up stoopid crazy passing numbers and that won't happen at Iowa.

Not with this offense

Elaborate a little.

What are your two key area of concerns. To me, it is about the same as last year, but hopefully with a little more mobile QB now. I think there will be a little less question mark at RB since Canzeri moved on and think will have a two headed monster with a better rotation with Mitchell III thrown in from time-to-time. I think the O-line will be a bit better. WR is a push but hopefully Kittle can really make even more strides this year.

I am thinking big picture in terms of being an high NFL draft pick. The league is desperate for quarterbacks and one from a power 5 conference that runs a pro style offense could be a high round draft pick. Of course CJB has to play well, but there is plenty of room after Deshaun Watson for him to work his way in there.

I heard somewhere that CJ is the number 2 NFL QB prospect.

I think he'll be a top 7 QB prospect but top 2, I'm not so sure.

Of course, tomorrow, some NFL guys will come out with their "way too early 2017 mock draft" so who knows what we'll see there.

Anymore your College and league has to promote the heck out of you to even be considered.A lot of politics involved and that's a shame.

Well let's see... last year's top Heisman QB contender's (Deshaun Watson) stats:

2015:
Comp: 333
Att: 491
Yards: 4104
Comp. %: 67.8
Avg Yards: 8.36
TD: 35
Int: 13
QB Rating: 156.3

CJ's stats last season:

2015:
Comp:223
Att: 362
Yards: 2809
Comp. %: 61.6
YPA: 7.76
TD: 17
Int: 5
QB Rating: 139.5

Sooo... only 1,300 less yards and 19 less TD's, but you want him to "elaborate"? And no, CJ's stats will not increase dramatically enough in this offense, especially with no real threat playing on the outside.

If Iowa has a 10+ win season and CJ stays healthy he could have a good run ala Banks or Long. To win it I believe Iowa would have to at least make the playoffs. As it is if King has a comparable year as last I could see him at least in the mix.

Id say if anyone on iowa has a remote shot of winning the Heisman it would be leshun Daniels. There's 0 history of him staying healthy so it won't happen, but iowa is a run first team and he at least has the body to sustain a season of pounding.

For cj his lack of receivers hurts him....including game breaking tight ends...like Dallas clark was for brad banks. That's not a knock against kittle...I love that dude...but DC was unreal. Cj also overthrew a ton of deep balls last year. Hopefully he gets that corrected

If Iowa wins 10 or 11 games next year who says CJ can't join McCaffrey and Watson at the Heisman ceremony.;)

What I mean is well don't throw the ball near enough nor are our relievers big enough playmaker to show consistently how good Cj is. I think Cj will be a very good product qb though

Yea, Fair enough. Thinking about it, it's definitely a stretch, but, so was Brad Banks and Shon Greene's runs. YOu never know, and again, he played one dimensional last year. If he runs a bit more, or gets 8 or so TD's running, who knows. It will be fun.

I can only echo those with the opinion that CJ would have to be really efficient and Iowa would have to win like last yr... I don't think he'll put up the numbers. To win the Heisman you have to win over a whole lot of voters that will never have or hardly have ever watched you play. Maybe they'll have watched your highlight reel. But only those within your conference seem to really pay that much attention to them. So if your just staring at stats and paying attention to ESPNs perceptions it's an uphill climb... CJ will be pretty far down the list when it comes to leaders in yards/TDs... He won't even have Watsons rushing stats.. Look anything is possible in the sense that if he could put up 3k yards 25 plus tds with 5 or less INTs then I give him a shot. But I'm not going to Vegas on it... So much also depends on what other players out there are doing...

But, Iowa got a looooooot of media coverage last year with their run so were noticed nationally. If CJ takes the team on another run & they were to make the playoff, he could be looked at as taking and leading this national perspective "usually mediocre" team. People were watching the results of Iowa games in November last year.

True that's one part and it'll help. If Iowa is undefeated and playing well going into when they play Wisconsin and then PSU at night week 10 after that then I'd say we'll be right on the similar radar for CJ to be getting recognized. I think the perfect storm is possible for him to get a trip to NYC. But it's a long shot and actually winning it has got to be even longer.
