Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two years?

It feels like we are not looking to attack as much on offense and our guards are not driving and attacking the rim as much. Why is this?

Well definitely not while Clemmons is in. They need to get White more involved. White may have to be put back at the four position. Maybe tomorrow we will shake off the beautiful beach blues and look more explosive. I just thought we looked a step slow tonight as the WK players were getting free and able to drive to the front of the basket to often. Fortunately they missed some wide open shots or else we would be preparing for DePaul.

I believe the tempo will be dictated by whatever the staff feels is needed to get the win. There will be nights where they win by outscoring an opponent 84-78 and there may be games like tonight where the offense is not shooting well and they have to rely on the defense to get it done. Also keep in mind the team is young and this trip is their first away from Carver which started with a 3am red-eye flight on Sunday morning after their game on Saturday.

Well put BigD. We indeed appeared a step slow. I'm questioning how much White's wrist is bothering him as he looked completely out of it tonight. We need Marble and White to show up tonight or we are gonna have a problem.

I think we're honoring Lick in attendance in memory of his era

I think Frans game plan is to still press. I think the reason you are seeing a "slower" game is due to execution by the players. We have been pressing way more then we did last year. Last night we did not value the ball at all and believed we ended up turning over more then WKU. Quite of few of those turnovers came in our fast breaks. If those turnovers don't happen it would seem like a faster game. We are also not making the shots we need to consistently. Also due to more full court press the players need to build up that game time endurance. All of this said is why we knew this team would struggle at points in this years.

I think the fact that it feels like we are less up-tempo is more a perception then reality. If we are scoring more then you would have felt the tempo was fine. There have been a lot of points left out there by Iowas offense.

My unprofessional and uneducated opinion is that the Hawks are a little less up tempo, but still quicker than the Lick era. (Of course, how could it NOT be quicker!!) They now have some true DI level basketball players. In Fran's 1st two years, they had to attack. If they didn't, the opposition got set defensively and we were doomed. Now, with a true point guard and big man (albeit freshmen), they can take their time if there isn't an immediate opportunity.

I'm hoping that the travel had a lot to do with the sluggish play last night. With that said, they had some really good defensive moments, but other times looked tired on both ends of the floor. Hopefully they get plenty of rest and come out with a little more fire in their bellies tonight. Our inability to shoot is a big concern. Gessell looked good, but what is up with Josh O? We need more shooters.

Iowa put up 66, 65, and 63 points respectively against some average to below-average teams.

For the Lick era, that would be an offense outburst...but yeah, those numbers concern me.

it's not because they are not pushing, it's because they are not making.

Stormin whats the stats on the missed shots in those games? How many shots are we taking a game and how many are we missing? Compare it to how many shots we took last year per game and that should give you the real answer if this team is less up tempo.

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

They are still averaging 72 pts a game - WKU was more a slow down team.

The amounts of shots in the game were pretty low.

A lot of games have looked so low tempo because we can't shoot either.

I think Fran wants to be uptempo - but he isnt goign to do it if its going to cause them to lose.

We can take a look at tempo-free stats for this.

2011:
Tempo 67.9
eFG% 48.1
21% of pts from 3ptrs

2012:
Tempo 68.6
eFG% 50.6
23% of pts from 3ptrs

2013:
Tempo 68.3
eFG% 48.6
23% of pts from 3ptrs

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

We lack team speed. We are long and lengthy. Look at Marble, Basabe, White, these guys are all long but not fast. We don't have a single guy who I would call a burner. Mike Gesell is not a fast PG. Marble isn't a speedy 2 guard. White isn't a fast 3. McCabe isn't a fast 4. Woody... acutally moves great for his size.

So we're basically the same tempo as last season, just missing a few more shots.

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

We do seem to be a bit slower than what was expected but remember, this is a very young team 5 games into the season. Once they begin to get more comfortable with game flow, the crowd, etc. . . I would think that those numbers go up.

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

I don't see much difference. I believe the opponents have more to do with it. Central Michigan was the only opponent that was willing to play uptempo. When Iowa went small in that game the pace was much faster. WKU they went with a big line up against Iowa's size. The better defense by Iowa is a factor. Opponents are taking longer to get shots off.

Re: Does anyone else feel like we are less up-tempo than we were Fran's first two yea

I'd say my biggest surprise is on the defensive side. Room to improve certainly, but solid. We just need to get the kinks out of the offense and get some shots to fall. It's going to be beautiful when this team catches fire and we go on a 10-0 type run.
