Jok deserves to play. It is ridiculous to think otherwise. But if I were him, I would concentrate solely on my defense.

They do not have stats on this, but there were games where the players Jok was defending outscored him at critical points in the game. Multiple games. The NBA scouts notice this more than most hard-core fans.

I am a Jok fan. However his defense and defensive leadership did not help the Hawkeyes, nor his draft status.

...this could give him an opportunity to heal up and start preparing for the NBA draft process.
There's no way Jok will make an NBA squad, let alone get drafted. He's too small, struggles to play D at even the NCAA level, and would get devoured by NBA defenders.

I think a lot of you college basketball fans either don't watch NBA or just plain don't comprehend how big the talent gap is between college ball and the pros. It's so much more than even football. The best way to comprehend if you're not a basketball person is to actually go to a game and watch because TV doesn't do it justice. Those guys are huge and on a whole different level. The game may look slower, etc., but it's apples/oranges. Jok and his Manute Bol legs would get tossed around like a rag doll. He's a good kid and did some good stuff here (especially last season), but he'd be in way over his head. Look how dominant Uthoff was in college...the pro game is eating him alive in the short time he's been there and he's even got some size.

Jok will play a few years for the Turkmenistan Goat Herders and make some decent money, then come back here and hopefully use that degree to make a whole bunch more. Don't put the Mitch King blinders on, people.

At first I thought this was a "Would we be better off if Jok didn't play in the NIT" thread. But I understand the question the OP is asking. It's a Christian McCaffery type question regarding Jok.

I would like him to play as he's a great shooter and helps our team. But if he decides that he is unhealthy and wants to heal up for his future, I wouldn't hold it against him. I would wish him good luck and cheer on the team.

I never said he is going to make the league. I don't think his chances are very good. That said I'm sure he is going to go through the draft process and give it his best shot.

I agree with your sentiment that many people around here think making it in the NBA is much easier than it actually is.

I can't believe this is even a question, Jok is part of the team so why wouldn't we want him to play? If he gives up like he did in the Indiana game then he can sit his butt on the bench.

Jok is fun to watch when hot shooting...

Jok is an outstanding FT shooter...

Jok isn't a good defensive player...

Jok is disinterested in defense...

Jok lacks effort on the defensive end at times...

Jok jogs and rests on the defensive end...

More times than not...the team is better as a TEAM without Jok...

The team knows this...

Fran knows this...

Jok will play in the NIT...

Iowa will be a better TEAM without a black hole senior to feed...and cover for on the defensive end of the court.

There you have it...

(The above comments have no bearing on whether he is a "good" person or not...)

I shouldn't even opened this thread but thought maybe it was going a different angle than the obvious title. Stupidest thread EVER!! Congrats.

This team will have 7 months to learn how to play without Jok. For now they need him.

I think most have figured out that this team will be fine next year and going forward. Not saying that to knock Jok at all but this proves one man doesn't equate to success. Jok is a senior and deserves to be on the court and play his minutes. He can score a lot but can also give us points, so we'll take the 8-10 pt advantage he may give us and move forward.

He needs to realize he can get his points playing within Iowa's offense instead of trying to force shots. If he does that, they will be good.

Woah. I'm not asking if Fran should bench Jok. I'm saying if Fran & Pete decided it was in Pete's best interest to not play in the NIT, would you as an Iowa fan be for it.

Kind of sounds like that when you start a thread titled "Do You Want Jok To Play In The NIT". How do you expect people to interpret that?

As a coach, Fran sits down with Pete and says, "I understand that you have a lotta basketball left to play in your career no matter what happens to this team. No one, including me, would blame you if you want to move on to bigger things and start working on your future now.
I need to know if you are all in on the NIT. Are you willing to sell out defensively to help this team win?"

"Oh, and if there are any technical FT's to be shot, will you shoot them?"

I want Pete to play. The real question is: Does HE want to?

Fair enough. Probably a poorly worded title but if you read my OP and responses you'd know that's not the intent.

Basically I was saying if Pete was 50/50 on whether he wanted to play or not, what would you want?

I personally would like to see more experience for the younger players. Pete likely gives us the best chance to win the whole thing, but to me personally I don't think anyone gets remembered for hanging NIT banners.

Pete will likely play, and I'm in no way going to be upset about it.

Ok. I hear ya. Sorry for any misinterpretation.

I want him to play, but I want him to play within the offense. I think that is when they are at their best and why they can succeed when he's off the court. Sometimes when he is in the game he messes with the team chemistry it looking too hard for shots.

As stated above, when he's on, it's fun to watch. He's a pure shooter. But, you can't have a team rely on him and that is where I think they can go wrong on occasion. Points will come with this Iowa team. It's always been on the defense.

So you were pretty much asking if Pete's head is not in the game, would we want him on the court. Gotchya.

Basketball isn't football.... he isn't hurt and has eligibility therefore he'll suit up. I guess I don't see the point in bringing up this scenario since it's irrelevant. It sounds like some of you may have Jok fatigue and a short memory. Yes he had a terrible game against Indiana. He's still one of the best players in college ball.

Not sure what fans don't understand. A lot of how Jok depends on what is being done defensively. On offense he doesn't have a lot of help/threats. Stop Jok and you have a good chance of stopping Iowa.

If he makes the NBA he won't be getting the same defensive attention as with Iowa. Not saying he won't have great defenders on him, but he won't be the focus.

Crean is a good coach though not a likable one.

Whew...we are back to level set of 4 Complete Morons. Any more than that and other morons will begin to flock to this board and we run the risk of becoming CyFan.

Jok hasn't been an effective player for at least the last two months. Here's his line since the Purdue home win on January 12th:

15PPG / 35% FG / 28% 3p / 3 TOPG

As I've said I believe that is because he is still injured. Even in the Indiana game with a wide open look at three it appeared to me he needed all of his strength just to get it there. Early in the year he could shoot from way behind three with very little effort.

But even that's not the point here. Jok is a great player and a great Hawk so if he wants to play he clearly has every right to.

My question was in a hypothetical scenario if Jok was considering sitting out would people be like:

-yes let's see what these young kids can do

Or

-no our chances of winning the NIT aren't as great now

In that case it's just up to him.
I mean if he’s too banged up to play then he’s too banged up. I thought in the 2nd half of the PSU game he was moving around out there just fine. He’s never been a defensive hustler type so it’s not that easy to know when he’s just totally loafing or if he’s kinda hurt. Or maybe during the Indiana game he was just trying to avoid picking up early fouls that’d cause him to sit like he did in the 1st half of PSU. I don’t think any of us can get in his head right now. I’d always rather watch that kid play if he can and wants to then not. Coming from where he did to where he is now is a heck of a story. He’s caught a lot of grief over the years. Some of it his own fault and he had to grow up along the way. Just because he isn’t perfect and doesn’t have whatever that ‘it’ factor that a kid like Baer has when it comes to hustling and defense doesn’t mean he isn’t a great player. It’d be like bashing Baer for not being a more polished free throw shooter/scorer. Nobody is doing that to him because of how hard he works and how good he is at what he does. Well Jok worked his butt off to get as good at shooting and scoring as he has too. There haven’t been any perfect players in the game of hoops yet have there? Now I’m not directing all of this at you just throwing out there for the masses to think about is all.
