Did The OLine Improve?

I only have one and he's 16. I hardly see the kid it seems like. He trains cross country every day after school, works for a few hours, and then there's generally something going on with friends like basketball/volleyball games to go and watch, stuff like that. On the weekends he's doing the same but adding in hunting pheasants with his buddies.
Cross Country guys seem to get pretty close as a unit and do lots of things together. Heads up, college, jobs, wife, kids... it doesn't get better on time.

Myself, I was really into horses for trail rides and barrel racing until I turned 16 and got a car. About the only time I was around my dad when I was on one tractor and he on the other before cell phones. He was hot-headed so that worked out OK.

I will give you a heads up. I have enough kids to know that each relationship is different, but what you can't control is their significant other. Some are selfish in general. Others are threatened by close family relationships of your child. Not there own, but by your child. Lots of navigation ahead. In the end you have to step back and let them go.

He found his niche in cross country. I used to do probably 10-15 5ks a year with friends as a recreational hobby, I was always in the 19:45-ish range. Never ran in HS, hated it. Played football instead.

My son always played football until this year, and I finally convinced him to go out for XC. He's skinny but really fit, and doesn't have the body style for football. I'm 6'1" with a 32" inseam, for reference he's 6'0" as a sophomore with a 36" inseam. He's quite literally all legs and purpose built for LD running. Took him to his first 5K this past spring (had to bribe him actually), and it was game on since then. He won it with a 19:04 with absolutely no training, and at the end of this past XC season he's down to right around 17:05 and still falling. Qualified for state in his first year in Iowa's toughest 2A district and now he's saying he wants to run in college.

To be honest it's the greatest thing that's ever happened to the kid. He went from average at most stuff to something he's really good at, and his mom and I saw an overnight transformation in self confidence and self esteem. My only regret is that I didn't steer him there earlier. He got approached by a private coach who wanted to train with him (an area guy who I've known since high school) and he just loves it. They have a group of 3 plus the coach with a really, really solid training plan from now until next fall including lifting, and he just eats it up.

I'm fine with him being so busy, I've accepted it as part of life and I know the work I did early on in his life with us being close will come back around when the time is right. I'd rather he was athletic, have a job, and be social rather than someone like my brother who was none of that and chose (still chooses) to sit at home by himself and be miserable and not healthy.

I'm betting Ryan Day sent him a text 15 minutes after the OSU game got over.
Oh I have no doubt he Saban Kiffin Fisher Harbaugh Franklin all those dudes have probably been trying to get a word in with him.

(Anyone getting a kick out of the yr Jimbo Fisher is having? Dude bought the #1 recruiting class pretty much and they are getting smacked around this yr)

I think these first few years of NIL and the portal are going to be the litmus test and donors are going to find out that spending millions on kids isn't going to guarantee results. Just like the NFL and other stuff.

At the end of the day people screaming about how NIL was going to completely ruin football are being exposed. There's still the same number of 4 and 5 star kids that are going to go to the same schools. Are we going to lose guys like Charlie Jones? Yep. But Iowa isn't the only school that has to deal with it and the boosters that paid Jones 7 figures to go to Purdue aren't exactly setting the world on fire in the B1G.

My oldest wanted to drop soccer his senior year (2 year starter at a pretty big school). I kind of regret talking him out of it now. Soccer and football can bring out the worst in parents whereas XC is a pure sport. You are either better than the next guy or you are not and there tends to be a lot of comradery about everywhere. In IL you do soccer in the fall and track in the spring so he got to know the XC guys and about died trying to keep up with them which he mostly did. He really liked the XC guys so I get it. The first team he went sub 4:45 in the mile in track at a meet he passed out right at the finish line. I could see he was in trouble coming down the stretch so I caught him going down.

Parents at XC are so much easier to chum with.

My only optimism is with the offensive line. This was only the 2nd game I attended in person, the other being SDSU, and from my seats (north endzone) you get a real good view of the line when they are driving towards the south end zone. After the SDSU game I left wondering how in the hell they were going to be able to block a Big Ten dline when they couldn’t block a FCS school. I’m open to the idea Northwestern is worse than SDSU, heck Northwestern lost to Southern Illinois, but the line went from looking like absolute shit to dominating.

Looks like to me KF gave some personal attention to that line in practice last week.
If this is the case, it's even more justification to put BF as dedicated OL coach and hire a real OC, asap (Chryst would be an awesome fit!)

This could be a legit solution to an awful situation.
- The OL can get the attention it needs to be the anchor of the offense and (hopefully) restore a competent rushing game. I still think these guys need to be turned loose to just focus on pushing people around for the rest of the season (The remaining competition would allow for this downhill blocking scheme and the guys might build some confidence / toughness.)

- BF can get a "soft" landing and wear dual hats as OL Coach and "Co-OC (ino)".

- KF can save a little face by appeasing the very loud national media with the perceived demotion of BF and keep the local rubes happy with a "productive" change.

Exactly. The pool of kids and the spots they have isn't changing. It's the fact that every player is a free agent at all times and can transfer at anytime pretty much is what really makes things what they are now too. You can buy a kid and lose him a few months later as if he wasn't even there like OSU did with that QB that went to Texas. Are the OSUs going to chalk that up to the cost of doing business or will the start backing off to an extent?

The culture of the program will still matter to some of the kids and those are the ones we obviously highlight and prioritize. But if you want to keep em NIL has to be embraced along with improving you're own roster through the portal. Can't sit on hands.

When evaluating Petras after his first two seasons nobody shoulda said yeah that's our guy we should want to go into battle with this yr. He shoulda been the last resort and they could have found someone in the portal that could have done better this yr. Granted the Oline and everything else went to shit too but even with better Oline play the previous 2 yrs Petras didn't set the world on fire.

My best friend in high school ran cross country. His senior year he pestered me to try out despite my asthma. I ran with him everyday for six weeks and struggled with the asthma. First day of try outs I ran JUST three miles and was dying struggling for breath at the end of the run. The head coach came up to me and said he knew I had been practicing for two months with his best runner, but that the asthma just would be too hard on me but that he appreciated the effort and preparation I put into it. My best friend wasn’t even breaking a sweat. I think he ran as much as 15 to 17 miles some days. Some folks are just made for certain sports I guess.

After this season I hope they remove BF as far away from the Hawkeye football program as possible. This hasn't been a good look for Iowa football nationally and I think KF recognizes that. I get a father wanting to protect his son but that means doing the right thing even if it means it hurts in the short term.

The kid could pick his spot on the line and start day 1 next yr... I hope he stays I really do I just don't think it's over till he's either enrolled early in Jan or signed and in camp next summer.

Maybe LT, with Richman moving over to RT?

There's just no way Kirk demotes him at all. Full stop.

He's either going to end up as an NFL assistant or he's done. No way he gets an NCAA coordinator position after these past few years and all the shit publicity he's had over the offense, and he's too stubborn to make a backwards move.

One of two things will happen to oust Brian from his OC seat.

1) Donors revolt against him to Kirk (very unlikely).

2) He quits on his own.

Book it. There is nothing else that's going to happen to make him leave no matter how many fantasy scenarios anyone comes up with.

I have always liked Chryst, and I agree he would be a stylistic fit. And maybe that is how we ride out the KF years. But I think now, more than ever, it is evident that the offense needs a radical overhaul. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but fans need to see something different, and recruits need to see something different.

Was at the game which is obviously better perspective on the whole field, here’s my thoughts which are worth what you paid for them…

1) This lineup and rotation is obviously better than what we’ve been doing and appears—to me at least—to be optimal for what we’ve got. It shouldn’t have taken this long, especially when we have one of the best DLs in the country to practice against. Kurt said in his Tuesday presser last week that 1’s never go against 1’s in practice. Maybe some limited time with starters vs starters would’ve shown it faster.

2) They were better in man coverage to the point where it was comical how much time Petras had to throw. Part of it was NW’s DL, but they did contain the edge better. That’s not arguable.

3) This does not excuse BF and KF because this is big boy football plain and simple, but I don’t think people stop to consider that OSU is the best team in the country (IMO) and Michigan is 3rd (they’re better than Tennessee). That’s not insignificant. Even more overlooked is that Illinois is the real deal this year. Bert got his team ready to play. What do I mean by that? This OL isn’t great, but it’s probably better than what people are giving credit for. Kurt and Brain should’ve realized what they needed to do personnel-wise a few weeks ago.
Can't argue with anything man.

How many miles is an official cross country course for competition? I don't know much about it.

College XC - Men is 8K or 10K (championships), Women is 6K. There is a movement to make both men's and women's distance 8K but it hasn't gotten much traction.

High School XC - 5K for boys and girls

Middle school XC - usually either 2K or 2 miles. In Iowa middle school is 2 miles.

In High school it's pretty common for courses to be slightly longer or shorter.
