Based on nothing but the short highlight clip I saw he reminds me of Glen Worley a little.
Well if so I hope the results are better than Glen’s. He was one of the biggest recruits to commit to Iowa at the time. Ended up being an even bigger disappointment.
Recruiting can be a hit and miss type of business. After Kirk started to have good success around his sixth year during the all American game where the best player commit live on TV several players committed to Iowa. I thought we had arrived as a major program after that game. That class ended up beings major bust.
Like many have stated many times on the forum here “Star ratings don’t necessarily pan out to instant success”. Sure the Alabama’s with their four and five star recruits seem to dominate but you have to give credit to the coaching staff.
We have been very successful with our three star players and our developmental program. Just once to put all the pieces together for that one magical year, awe but alas it’s not meant to be. Twenty-five years is evidence of that. Very good program, very good coach, just not able to get to the top of the mountain.
I am a BEAR’s fan and was very grateful for 1985 and got a lot of pleasure out of that season. I didn’t have any unrealistic expectations after that and always look back with satisfaction of finally reaching the top of the mountain. Took the Cubs a long time to find the top of the mountain, but it was worth the wait.
Kirk is a very good coach. What is really important even more is how he took a lot of good players and made a lot them even better citizens, future husbands and fathers and at the end of the day better human beings.
Am I disappointed with no top of the mountain? Of course, but there are more important things in life even if get pissed off during the games. Something about being a husband, father, and grand father to help set priorities straight.
Is Dad the problem or the Iowa fan base or a little bit of both?
