Deuce Hogan Tweet

so in essence, I think it's outdated so despite still being in effect, we'll just ignore it. I can only assume the rule was done away with shortly there after by the commissioner
In my post above I screen-shotted the rule from OBR, the notes and "1.10(c) Comment" were added to clarify after this deal went down. Now it clearly says that you get tossed for using an illegal bat so you don't have to rely on an additional rule for the penalty stuff.

I will agree that a different crew might have called it a different way.

But...there is only one correct call, which is luckily the one they made. We have the benefit of hindsight, but if an umpire called it differently they would have been wrong.

That's one misconception that people have about umpiring (and officiating in general)--that there's a grey area which let's you interpret the rules.

OBR is not ambiguous on this one...a ball hit with an illegal bat results in an immediate out and nothing that happens after that counts. That's been crystal clear for over a century. So a crew who called it differently would have blown it.
That's definitely an important point. We have the benefit of hindsight. They had to act quickly and make a call that would have a direct impact on the final outcome of the game.

BTW, I watch all the major sports, have for over forty years. Major League Umpires are BY FAR the best officials of all the sports. The best umpire I ever saw may have been the late Nick Bremigan. His passing just before the start of the 1989 season set the tone for a dark, dark year for baseball with Pete Rose, Giamatti's in office death, the earthquake in the World Series, etc.

I think it’s because it has the biggest and most complex rule set. Almost to a fault but I’m a traditionalist so I wouldn’t change anything (other than shitcanning the DH and Wild Card play in )

A coworker friend of mine refs soccer, he showed me the IHSAA rule book and I said, “Are you fucking with me? Where’s the rest of it?” Then I remembered that he runs like 37 miles a game.

There’s definitely a reason that umps get paid the most in Iowa HS, they aren’t better than the others, there’s just so much subject matter that it makes people’s heads spin when they try to get started. Football you have the benefit of conferring with your crew regularly and picking up flags, making adjustments to spots, fixing mistakes, etc. and you’re 100 yards away from shit stain fans who think they know the rules. If I screw up and call a guy out there’s no going back.

Basketball...I wouldn’t do that for $300 a game. Every single foul could be a charge or block and those A-hole parents are literally close enough to grab you on the baselines. You basketball refs out there...hats off to you.

Here's my take as a coach.

How old is he? If it's 3rd/4th grade age, I don't see any harm in it. It may help a little just for the fact that he'll get more balls hit to him, but the throws are going to be super goofy. Actually ignoring skill level I move kids all over at that age because wining games isn't important, it's the development that I want them to get. Stay away from youth coaches who get hung up on wins. They're trying to relive their own childhoods. Ask Bryce Harper if he remembers how many games his team won when he was 9 years old...he definitely remembers coaches who helped him with his swing. Again, it's development that important for kids who have raw talent, wins at that age are for 38 year old washouts to brag about at USSSA meetings.

Once you get to 5th/6th age, if he's really athletic and has a lot of natural skill, I'd avoid it because once he hits junior high or advanced ball he'll never see SS again and he probably needs time in the outfield to get footwork and relays down. You'll see some lefties at 3B but normally they're outfielders.

I see you mentioned catcher, not sure if that's what you meant but left handed catchers are more rare than left handed infielders.

I had no idea left-handed catchers were so rare, I did not think it would be that much of an impediment. Apparently the last left-handed catcher in MLB caught a game about 30 years ago:

Most hitters are right handed. They're directly in the way of a lefty catcher's throw to 3B, and when there's a play at the plate they have to backhand the ball and move for the tag. A right-handed catcher can position his/her glove right over home and let the ball come to it for the tag.

Also fun fact, the pine tar game was the last time a left handed fielder played second base in the MLB. When they finally restarted the game, Bert Campenaris was on the DL so they put Don Mattingly over there from those last few outs.

Hasn't been one in the 36 years following.

Actually, Anthony Rizzo was credited for playing 2B last year on April 1 (see his 2018 Fielding baseball reference page linked below). He has had some appearances there in previous years (2016 and 2017 as well) In some bunt coverages, the Cubs would have Rizzo playing so close (see below) and the 2B playing so close to 1B, that they technically switched positions. Rizzo even had to change gloves (see second link from 2016).

Don't you just love baseball?

Here's the rule in question. Note that before the pine tar game, the rule did not specify a penalty, only that the bat had to be removed from the game. However, a ball hit with an illegal bat has always been very clearly stated in the rules as an illegally batted ball. Which is an out. Billy Martin knew that, and waited for the next good time to appeal it. It isn't a coincidence they did it after a home run and not a fly ball or ground out.

After the shit show in 1983 they added language that just went ahead and said you get tossed for the illegal bat regardless of whether you hit with it or not, which is in the notes.

Remember when Sammy Sosa used a corked bat (2003)? He's out and the runners go back to where they were.

Yes. Exact same as the pine tar thing but people want to make a huge complicated story where there isn’t one.

Not really a huge baseball fan (game is a bit too slow for me), but I do think athletic development is a really interesting topic. So let me ask you, knowledgeable baseball fan/coach/umpire:

If you have a little league kid who is left-handed, and he is far and away your best option for SS based upon his ability to field the ball and throw to first base, do you let him play short? Or is he as CF or C based upon where he is likely to end up down the road?

Secondarily, if he does play SS to best help the team, is that a detriment to his long-term development/potential, is it neutral, or does it actually help him out (or is development so multifactorial that this is a stupid question to even ask)?
Left handed infielders at any position (sans first base) should probably be avoided by little league, and definitely pony league.

Any ball hit to a left handed infielder's right would require them to spin completely around before throwing to first base.

A left handed second baseman would have to turn completely around to turn a double play.

First base (my old position though I'm right handed) doesn't require elite athleticism or a strong arm. It does require a good glove. Athletic attributes, speed, arm strength etc., would be put to better use in the outfield or on the mound. A left handed left fielder needs at least an average arm because they would have to spin around to throw to second on anything hit down the line.

“First of all, just a winner,” Hogan said. “From elementary P.E. to varsity football games I’ve just won wherever I’ve stepped on the field. Don’t take that as coming across as cocky in any way, but I’m very confident I’m going to win games. That’s just who I am. Secondly, in terms of how I’m going to play the game, I’m a pro-style passer, that’s who I am.

“It’s going to be a mind game. I’m going to make the defensive coordinator at Ohio State pull his hair out. I’m going to enjoy it, that’s what I’m going to do. I love the whole chess game of it. The Iowa system is going to fit great and it’s going to translate to the next level for me. They’re going to get a pro-style quarterback and definitely somebody that’s going to win football games.”

For those of you who don't remember the 70s...well...it was a thing.

I'm actually concerned this may be bad for recruiting.
Curious as to how this is bad for recruiting or if that’s supposed to be a joke and it went right over my head? Lol

I have to admit it was kind of entertaining to read Ohio State fans comments. If you are going to run your mouth like that, you are going get slammed by the other team, that is a given.

They got a good point. Since OSU is in the other division, The odds are that Duece probably will start against OSU maybe once in his Iowa career, if at all. Oh well, when he starts that 1 time, I hope he has a career day against OSU.
