Not that I mind it, but I'm not a liar who pretends to speak for everyone and declare we are the Marquess of Queensbury fanbase. You do not know this fanbase at all. You know who the prototypical Hawkeye is? THE OP. You ever read any of his posts? Are they snowflake-centric designed to protect feelings? I don't know what nation you're living in, but you are a stranger to either Hawkeyenation or reality or both.

lol I hope the floor is comfy. I could not care less about your @ symbols. We have the longest tenured CFB coach in the nation and he bans his players from Twitter. That is the reality of our program.

For context, I engage in this website to discuss Iowa sports players, coaches, refs (occasionally), opponents, recruits, etc. - active participants. I'm not really here to talk about people who are talking about Iowa sports.

One thing nobody has asked... what prompted his tweet in the first place? Seems kinda random. It's the off season, he committed months ago, not headed to Iowa City until next year. Was he responding to someone else?

He was tweeting at some recent Iowa offers, telling them to come join Swarm '20. He threw a little smack in there just for fun.

Kind of interesting dynamic right now. Stanley at 6’4” with limited mob, Petras is 6’5” and can’t move, Hogan at 6’4 ish and not mobile. Then you have 6’3” Mansell with mobility and Padilla at 5’10” with some mobility. Weird variety.

i have come to view this as projected starter/backup/starter/backup. you'll notice it is every other class you get each type. having said that, i think the competition is fair, but kirk clearly isn't a user of mobile qb's throughout his history of iowa, with a couple of exceptions. kirk is a dropback prostyle qb kind of guy.

I know I'm being pedantic, but where'd you get them numbers? Iowa roster lists Mansell at 6'2", and I have a very hard time believing is a full 3 inches shorter than his recruiting height.

And although I haven't seen the tape to back it up, but I don't think Hogan is necessarily a statue. He ran a 4.89 at some camp, which isn't fast, but not necessarily lumbering either.

Mansell is a little over 6’2”. Mobile is not a 40 time either. Game tape helps. Didn’t say he can’t move, just not mobile in today’s sense of mobility. Point being, very interesting variety.

Lee Elia never said it better.

My favorite part is when he tells Doc to get ready to go out for a beer. Wally was already drunk. He and Lenny Dykstra were known to drink in the clubhouse during games.

Wally was rumored to be the White Sox top target for their opening manegerial position in 2004. He had skeletons in closet, something about inappropriate groping of a woman. The Sox turned to Ozzie Guillen, fresh of a championship with Florida in 2003 as their third base coach. He would soon have another Championship as White Sox manager.

Wally was a notorious groper. But the guy tagged some fine ass.

“First of all, just a winner,” Hogan said. “From elementary P.E. to varsity football games I’ve just won wherever I’ve stepped on the field. Don’t take that as coming across as cocky in any way, but I’m very confident I’m going to win games. That’s just who I am. Secondly, in terms of how I’m going to play the game, I’m a pro-style passer, that’s who I am.

“It’s going to be a mind game. I’m going to make the defensive coordinator at Ohio State pull his hair out. I’m going to enjoy it, that’s what I’m going to do. I love the whole chess game of it. The Iowa system is going to fit great and it’s going to translate to the next level for me. They’re going to get a pro-style quarterback and definitely somebody that’s going to win football games.”

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess this kid is not going to speak to reporters as a freshman!

The "spirit of the rule," i.e. why they put it into place, was because the leagues couldn't afford to go through dozens of balls back then. So to stop them from getting all marked up they put the pine tar rule in place.

MacPhail (baseball president at the time) reversed the call because he didn't feel Brett violated that "spirit" or intent. I have to agree, technically. They've added clarification to the rule since then, btw. The notes under 1.10(c) clarifying the rule and its application is about twice as long as the rule itself.

Side note: When I was in my late teens I was curious how many balls they would actually go thru in one game. I watched a Cubs game and counted how many baseballs left the yard, mostly foul balls. It ended up somewhere in the 50's I remember for how many go to the stands.

You could probably add another twenty or thirty that bounce in the dirt or whatever and are taken out of play. In addition to home runs, foul balls in the grandstands, etc.

8-10 dozen per game is what the MLB reports, so 233,000 to 292,000-ish a year for the league during the regular season, probably 325K+ if you count playoffs and WS.

I umpire with a guy who does NAIA and did three years of A ball, and he said in the minors teams generally had 6 dozen at each game and they went through at least 5 no matter what.

Last night I did a JV/V double header, started the JV game with 4 and tossed one because of a cut from the fence, varsity game I got 5 plus 1 at the mound and gave the coach 6 balls back at the end. Actually, getting 6 gamers is unusual for varsity around here, most times it’s 4 or 5.

Why do you take me as the delayed/long Striiiiiiiiiike guy

Nope. I find that shit kind of annoying.

And...the first year I umpired, twice I accidentally called strike 3 on “something and 1” counts which is hellaciously embarrassing. I remember one of them was with two outs so I had to send fielders back out after the opposing coach was done telling me what a f’ing dipshit I was.

I readily admit my eff-ups, and after that I decided discretion is the better part of valor and I’ve stuck to humble strike threes.

Any umpire worth his salt will tell you we hate calling the third one, btw. We want you to swing at anything within reach of the catcher lol.
