Derrell Johnson-Koulianos Statement on His Time with Iowa Football

@Fryowa settle man. I respect you but you have a tendency to be all doom and gloom about things. All of our 2020 and 2021 recruits are still 100% on board, and the team is more unified than ever according to insiders.

The national perception of Iowa is not what you think it is. There's not a person I saw on reddit (famous for its rational takes and reluctance to jump to conclusions /s) that takes DJK seriously, and a decent amount of the complaints are shriveling up.

Guys like James Daniels, Mike Daniels, Jaleel Johnson, and several others all had legitimate points to make, but they made clear they were doing so for the good of the program, and they DID NOT want anyone's heads. Unfortunately the Twitter mob got a hold of it and ran with it, but some of those stories are already backtracking or dubious at best.
Agree, but sacrifices must be made, really how hard will getting a new S/C coach gonna be? The real test is will Kirk shield Brian from the fire. Brian can not remain on staff and one of the big three positions must be given to a non-white. Sorry, that just has to happen.

The most damning evidence against Brian is that he's a dick and he made a bank-robbing joke to a black player.

We already knew #1, and #2 had more to do with WHO the joke was told to, not the content of it. Masks have been worn by robbers of all colors since forever. Dumb thing to say, but I highly doubt it was racist. AND Wadley has since claimed he doesn't want anyone fired.

I absolutely knew the nepotism would end burning Iowa at some point. Coaches should always earn their way and coaches sons should never be on their dad's staff. Go elsewhere earn and learn your position than return. Kirk has made his bed.
Nepotism does not have a history of happy endings.

I read through DJK's statement twice last night, and slept on it.

The guy freely admits that he repeatedly refused to follow Kirk's directives - and he doesn't know why he was constantly in the doghouse? I found myself thinking that in order for Ferentz to get that angry/vindictive, DJK must have been one serious antagonist over and over.

I'm shocked he lasted on the team as long as he did.
After DJK Kirk must have said no more, the recruiting really changed after that. It became way more is he a "fit" for the program approach. That being said, asking a grown man to run around with a garbage can on his head, that's just wrong. Better to have him leave the team than that kind of shaming. It might have seem funny but it was beyond stupid.

If not Brian who? Kirk has to put a black coach in a position of authority. Parker has earned his position, Kirk is not stepping down, that leaves Brian's position. Or Barta has to be replaced with a minority hire. Oh how I wish that would happen.

You mean like Copeland, Bell, Foster, or Braithwaite? Again, the allegations against Brian do not add up to removal.

We do not want to cow completely to the cancel mobs, because time and again it's been proven they are NEVER satisfied.

<<more unified than ever according to insiders>>

Sort of more like "unified, minus one".

In other words, qualifications aren't the issue, race is. Yikes.

I suspect strongly that KF's "Toe the line and keep yourself buttoned up tight" expectations developed, at least in part, from the mid- to late-2000's stretch of player legal issues that reached a breaking point with the 2007 class and the Everson/Satterfield sexual assault case:

2004 class:
Kyle Williams

2005 class:
Dana Brown

2006 class:
Anthony Bowman
James Cleveland
Dominique Douglas
Arvell Nelson
DJK

2007 class:
Cederic Everson
Abe Satterfield

During this time Iowa started getting nationally critical press for ranking among the upper tier schools in arrest rates. This list is not comprehensive. These are the arrests that I recall being for something more serious than alcohol/DUI.

Wasn't DJK the one that moved out of his dorm room without telling anyone then gave other players access to it? The room was then used to commit a rape. I believe DJK was only allowed to stay on the team because they needed him to win games. I also believe the rape had a lot more to do with the recruiting shift away from the michigan st. style of recruiting. And Kirk probably never forgave him for facilitating a rape under his watch than any of his other antics (assuming I'm remembering that right and it was his room).

I'm hoping Barta makes his mind up or asks the donors to make it up for him. This thing dragging on for weeks into months will not be good.
Perhaps Doyle will be the only one offered up for sacrifice at this point. However, a slow bleed, with an unhappy Woke Mob swirling about Kirk and Brian will be more damaging to the program, as you suggest. At the least, it will be interesting to see how it plays out and what the Barta Gamebook looks like.

Failure to fully comply will result in you being called a racist by 9 white kids from Downers Grove who have slightly above room temperature IQs. Can you handle that?

Yeah sorry didn't believe a lot of DJK's story.

No way in hell that a coach wants his own player raided... making the program and himself look bad, that's just complete and utter bullshit.

I also don't believe that Kirk said anything mean to his parents or whatever. That's not even close to Kirk's style. I'm not saying Kirk is innocent of everything.. but yeah no way.

I am really glad you posted this. I remember KF really being under fire for the disruption in the program caused by some bad actors. I think he has stressed family background and character at a higher level than ever after those experiences. In fact, lest we forget, that has also been an “Iowa Way”.
