Defense

They did look a lot better this week. Maybe last week was a wake up call. Or maybe the clowns are jsut that much worse.
 
Not thrilled with the Defense this year. ISU sure didn't help themselves.... I think the D will get better as the year goes along
 
First game was a out as plain straight up defense Iowa has ever played. This game brought out a little more of the play book, but still left a lot out. I doubt we see much more from them next week.

I would imagine we won't see the raider package until the big ten season.
 
They lined up in the package Raider or Radar what ever, and then ISU called time out. After the T/O, Iowa went to basic.
 
They looked better, but I think Miami beats ISU. Also, Miami lost to Eastern Ill tonight.

We're going to find out a lot more about this team next week. NDSU is actually down this year, but it will be the best offense we've faced yet.
 
I know people hate the doom and gloom on this site. But before this game became background music, I noticed a lot of wide open WR that Lanning could not hit. I mean a lot. Better QBs will come along and Iowa had shore that crap up. Soon, like next week soon.
 
Looks to me like the plan is to double team Jaleel and neutralize the other three d-linemen one on one. Tonight was much better, but we seem to be a step slow in our reaction time. I'm concerned we may be missing Jim Reid more than we thought. I know we are playing pretty vanilla still...no blitzing, but the DL just isn't getting a ton of penetration in the run game. Jaleel did a few times, but that's it. We need Hesse to get healthy. What ever happened to Michael Slater. I know he got hurt, but wasn't he expected back. We need depth on the DL..

Johnson is a 1 tech. 1 techs line up in the A gap and face double teams on a regular basis. All our 1 techs over the years face a lot of double teams, it's the point of the scheme to line them up there.........
 
Very disciplined defense. Lanning did miss some open receivers, but there were so many times where there wasn't anyone open. DL did a great job of collapsing the pocket while staying in their pass rush lanes. In position all night to stop the run, outside of a scrambling QB a few times. Very impressed.
 
I agree our LB's played well and Mabin won more than he lost.Also agree a better QB will make a lot of the throws that Ia St missed.Good 2nd win just keep improving.Go Hawks

Right...so what's it tell you if they doubled teamed him all night and almost every play?
 
Raider package, I don't know if you could tell at home, but on 3rd and long Iowa State hurried to the line and we couldn't substitute. Smartest thing they did all day.
