Davis Has to Go

Tate, Narinskiy, and Albert Young talk about Davis in their latest podcast. It sounded like they liked Davis's play calling in the Wisconsin game, but felt Iowa didn't have the athletes for the calls.

We either need to change the way we play the game or recruit the players needed to make it work. It's painfully obvious. What we can't do is continue to do things the way they're currently being done and expecting different results.

We should scheme to the players we typically recruit. I think we do a OK job of this on defense. Whatever is the best scheme for NFL OL and TE's, and possession WRs mostly. It doesn't mean an NFL WR won't do well if we get one. I actually think Wisconsin has done a good job of this on offense.

Davis isn't the Defensive coordinator, but his offense going 3-7 and out and not flipping field position has Plenty to do with the defensive side of the ball.

KF's best team were never "loaded with talent"? Yes, we had great players and strong position groups...great Off and Def Lines and a few year of awesome LB corps....and of course the Bob Sanders / Dallas Clark's / Shonn Greene's of the world. But Iowa has rarely, if ever, been "Loaded" with talent at more than 2-3 positions at any given time.

.

Several of those teams were in fact loaded with talent as seen by NFL participation. If your bar is Alabama....mayyybe not, but almost all teams in the USA would love to have that kind of talent.

We were 16th in NFL draftees from 2006-2015 so I wonder what our average team ranking was. Maybe around 30th or 35th on average, just guessing. That's including two top ten finishes in 2009 and 2015 during that period. It should have been better though when looking at NFL draftees.

I wasn't referring to a stretch. I was referring to specific years. The Orange Bowl teams and a couple of others were quite loaded.

Makes sense. My comment pertaining to the defensive side of the ball was depth, which in my opinion goes hand in hand with recruiting. If we are going to play a conservative offensive game in which we depend on the defense getting stops and coming up big late in the game to preserve a hard fought win, then we have to be deeper. We cannot expect our starters to play that many snaps throughout the game if we expect them to make stands in the fourth on a game to game basis.

Our defense rarely blitzes yet we find our front 4 struggling to get to the QB consistently. We've struggled in the past rotating linemen in and out and all to often expect a ton of snaps out of our LBs. If we are going to play this style we need to recruit for this style. If we don't have the pieces in place then whether it be depth or personnel we need to take a different approach whether it be playing more aggressive on offense or opening up the playbook offensively to get that first down rather than running the clock down as far as possible and punting away.

I'm only a fan with limited football knowledge, but it baffles me when we were so close (by design) and can't come up with the play to seal the win late in the game.

GD needed to go after his 1st year and if he leaves after this year he needs to get a rope and hitch it to Phil Parker and take him out also. KF needs to grow a pair and hire some coordinators who think outside the box, who make adjustments and most of all someone who will challenge Kirk.
Kirk is fully content going 7-5 year after year and he always will with the assistants he hires. 7-5 is a great record for Maine but Kirk's not coaching Maine anymore. I'd appeal to Mr. milquetoast but he's to afraid of his own shadow to do anything.

This may sound like nitpicking (which it is) but the NFL draftee thing can be a bit misleading. I think it's fair to say most of our NFL-level guys don't get there til there Senior year (developmental program...right?). Where an Alabama, LSU, Ohio St often has guys playing at that level in their Jr, Sophomore and sometimes even Freshmen years.

Just guessing but I bet our aggregate ranking was closer to 45th. I agree with your point that with our talent we under-achieved more often than over-achieved during that time frame.

69 posts and Davis is still on the payroll? Wonder how many it will take to get him gone?

It's gotta be a big number. There's easily over a dozen Hawkeye message boards total. Plus of course editorial messages for the readers of sports/news websites. And each message board over the last 5 years has over 100,000 posts dedicated to the problem that is named Greg Davis.

Let's do the math. 100,000 X 12 = over a million times frustration has spilled over to the internet.

Maybe a certain coach is a slow learner, or possibly, stubborn???

Good point. It takes longer for us to get guys to that level so we have a smaller window.
