Dailey

There’s no good reason for Dailey not to play back up PG. If I understand he’s played it before coming to Iowa. He’s quick, can handle it some and drive which almost no one on the team can do especially from the backcourt. If he can do it this opens up a whole new capability for this team and let’s JBO focus on shooting the ball not dribbling up top side-to-side 30 feet from the basket. Also Dailey provides tremendous defensive potential with quickness, size and length. There could be a combo of Baer-Moss-Dailey at the 1-3 along with Cook and Nunge. We might go from a poor defense to sound over night.

The last point is MD has had more than 1 effective game already this season but I’ve seen posts about his 1 game against Colorado? He’s not a selfish player and likes to get others involved. He’s also willing to play D and rebound. It’s incredible how much one player has to do to earn trust. By the same token he’s not going to be lights out every game but he can also play D which he will.

He’s shooting 40% from 3, 80%+ from the FT line and averaging more pts per game than Baer in 4 less minutes.... yet there’s doubts?

With Connor done for the season, we’re going to see pretty quickly how well Dailey does at point. Could be good.

ty. the good news is that Daily looked pretty good in about 5 minutes of pg time in the 1st half, so far.

“He’ll be really, really sucking wind. It’s just hard to play that way. Because you’re trying to process the gameplan and you’re trying to run what we want to run and you’re physically just so gassed that you can’t be effective. My concern is his physical well-being. I don’t want to put him out there and put him at risk of any further injury because his body has been so compromised.”

oh, he played more than 5 minutes in the 1st half; I was only saying he played about 5 minutes at the pg spot. I just checked first half stats for MD: 8 mins / 6 pts / 3 ast / 0 to's. I'll take 12 and 6 from a backup pg all season long.

soooooo, daily with a nice base line drive for a dunk and one....'cept he fell hard on his right hip and had to leave the game. not sure how bad it is but he didn't shoot his free throw. go figure, right? iowa is snake-bit this season, so far.

daily is back on the bench and appears to be ok. hasn't re-entered the game yet, though. let's hope his hip doesn't get too stiff.

Quite frankly if we were serious about winning I’d put JBO on the bench and change his role to what Ellingson should be and that’s 3 point shooter off the bench.

Dailey can deal and do so much more than JBO on both ends it’s not funny. I absolutely love JBOs shooting but that’s his entire skill set/value. Give MD the minutes at the point JBO gets and we would be legitimately better. Then have JBO come in to knock down threes for instant offense. Fran will never do that but that is the type of thing that holds him back as a coach.... making the right call to put his best players in their best possible roles. He’s loyal to a fault sometimes. I get it but you are paid to win games.

no, i think JBo needs to be a SG and a 3pnt assassin. He needs to be on the floor taking as many (good) 3's as possible. that's my opinion.

If he’s hitting 3s I agree but when he’s not his defense is so bad he’s a minus player. Last night 1-5 shooter from 3 cannot offset layup after layup after easy basket the opponent gets from driving right past him.

Yes...but what you fail to recognize is that other teams have to play defense a certain way when Bohannon is in the game. You can't let him beat you...that's why are post players have so much room. It's the same thing with Jok last year...teams were gearing their defense to beat Jok. I'm not saying Jordan is at that level offensively, but if you leave him open from three, he'll hit 60%...dog him on defense and he'll still hit 44% or whatever he's shooting.

Seriously?

First of all you’re completely wrong about that but even if you were right name another time where Fran was “loyal to a fault” for the worse of the team? He had to bench a senior this year that got minutes the last three years on teams just as good/ better than this one. Tough decision but he did it.

Now to the Dailey thing. His emergence has been key to this team. He provides much need athleticism in the backcourt. That does not mean he is a PG. Do you people understand that he has probably played less than 30 minutes total at the PG position this entire year? That’s even after CW transfer, CM health issues, and Ellingson being a complete debacle at the 1. You think it’s some conspiracy theory by the coaches not to put him there? Dailey can do it against the NIU’s and Drake’s (btw he didn’t play the PG at all in his best game vs. Colorado), but how do you know he will be able to handle is against B1G competition? Simply put, you don’t.

Now he’s going to be thrust into the roll of backing up JBo until (hopefully) Cmac returns. He’s a better option than Ellingson so let’s hope he’s can handle it. But to say he would be such a better option than a returning B1G all freshman PG is ridiculous.

I disagree completely. Dailey needs to be our point guard now. This does not mean I am down on JBO. Instead I am saying that his role needs to shift to his primary and major talent which is shooting the ball. JBO is a tremendous defensive liability. Dailey is much more suited for the PG role and can effectively play both ends. There’s nothing outside of shooting that JBO can do that MD can’t do and do better. MD is shooting 40% from 3 too by the way. He has played a little PG in high school and AAU ... which most of our fans do not realize. It’s not a new position or role.

Dailey can do it all include attack the basket and get to the rim. Handle, drive, dish, shoot, defend and rebound. He has athleticism, size and length. This guy could be a difference maker with more development.

The issue is people made their minds up about him based off of 20 garbage minutes of play over a handful of games last year. Not realizing his skills and abilities playing basketball in Ohio not Iowa.

Listen to some of the recruiting comments when we got him....

"When it all clicks, (Dailey) definitely has the potential to be a steal for Iowa," said David Cassilo, a recruiting analyst from Cleveland for the Prep Hoops Network.

he's not a polished point guard that can step in and help Iowa at their biggest position of need next year.

Dailey shows off some nice shooting from outside in this clip, as well as the ability to take an opponent off the dribble and attack the rim effectively. He also looks like a pretty smooth, fluid athlete with good body control.

And while he may not be a ready-made point guard from day one, you don't have to squint too hard to see some Devyn Marble in his game, either, and McCaffery was able to mold Marble into a pretty effective point guard for Iowa.

I love Dailey. Love what he’s brought to this team, but that doesn’t mean he’s our primary point guard.

Jbo’s only skill isn’t his shooting. He has moxy and is a pretty good passer. Didn’t he break or come close to breaking a freshman assist record at Iowa last year? People that argue that JBo is a 2 have never been able to answer this question. How are his defensive deficiencies all of the sudden erased at the 2?

Dailey does have some PG “skills” for a guy who’s 6’7 I’ll give you that. But that doesn’t mean he can handle that roll for 30 minutes. You bring up Marble, he was never in his career Iowa starting or primary point guard.

JBo at PG, Moss, Dailey, and Baer on the wings. Dailey spelling JBo until Cmac gets back. Better defense and limit turnovers. Pretty simple.

Dailey is and will be a better PG than JBO hands down. Assists can be a highly overrated stat. What you need to examine is how many assists are created by a player’s action with the ball vs throwing the ball to an open teammate like Jok who is also a great shooter capable of making contested shots. I want to know the number of assists created by dribble drive not passes in a motion sets. How many times has he attacked the basket and scored?

To answer your question on his defense at the 2 is it’s also poor. His defense will always be poor so they only way he becomes a plus player is draining 3 pointers which he can do.

Again ... JBOs role needs to be an off the ball shooter with Dailey running the show.

Disagree and find it laughable that you say assists is an overrated stat and agree with previous poster that Dailey is playing well but most of his time this far has been at the wing.

JBo is a good passer and a good shooter. His weakness is on D which doesn’t change moving him to the 2.

Disagree. Dailey is a difference maker on a team that needs one at the PG. Is he a combo guard? Sure, but he can play the point on both ends effectively.

We would not be 9-6 losing to ULL, SDSU, PSU at home, etc. with an effective PG playing both ends. JBO needs to shoot it not hande it and trying to initiate offense under pressure which he struggles with mightily. Not his strength at all. His D can’t be helped.

Assists need to be tracked in terms of 3 categories;

1. Dribble drive creation
2. Great finds off the ball
3. In the flow of regular offense

There’s a lot of differences between these. A player can rack up a lot of #3 without impactIng the game to the degree of a player doing 1 & 2 also.
