Cully Payne Injury

A player getting injured is never a good thing, but had Cully not gotten injured would Cartwright have played enough and gained enough confidence to emerge like he did this year?

I think Cartwright has locked up not only the starting role, but the go-to clutch role for next year and probably 30 minutes per game for next year.

Agreed, it was a blessing in disguise. Now when Cully comes back we can have a solid duo at the point. If they'd kept splitting time all year, Cartwright doesn't get to the level that he's played at for the past 2 months.

The one thing it has affected is Devyn Marble's development at the wing having to play point as much as he has had to. However, he might not have gotten as much PT if he was solely at the 3.

It helped Marble's skills with the ball though. Which is important at a slashing position. Hopefully he becomes a guy who can take his defender off the dribble in the years to come.

I would think Cully stays for this reason. He plays mostly 2 next year and backsup, but can play with both Cezar and Cartwright. Then in 2012 when Cartwright is gone, he backs up Cezar (or starts but shares time) and plays the 2 as well

Unless its injury related, Cully would be making a mistake if he left. He will still see time on the floor throughout his career.

I had thought Cully would be a candidate for transfer the way Bryce has worked out and the likelihood of signing a second PG. But now I don't know how many D1 schools would take a chance on a player who has had two significant injuries in the past three years. I hope he stays and definitely think he will get considerable PT next year and future years.

He prob won't ever be 100% again, in my medically uneducated opinion.

He has been playing up at the rec the past few weeks. If you didn't know he was injured you certainly wouldn't guess it by watching him play. He is running and cutting like normal.

Can someone give me an assessment of Cully's abilities? Shooter? Penetrator? Can he finish in the lane? Can he defend? I couldn't stomach to watch this team last year, so I didn't see him play and I'm going to assume that what I saw of him this year isn't an accurate indication of his abilities.

He's great at jumping in the air and making a quick pass.

He looked pretty raw last year, looked like someone who could be an effective PG with some time for developement. We didn't have any other options though.

His shot is probably better then Cartwrights but never really did you ever see Payne finish at the rim.

Hopefully Cartwright has been showing him some moves. How long has he been okay to practice?

It is difficult to make projections on Payne given the differences between the two coaching styles. Lickliter did not want to push tempo ever and McCaffrey wants to push it whenever possible. Payne strikes me as a player who will thrive in McCaffrey's system because he has decent ball skills, can identify open shooters in transition and is capable of knocking dow mid range jumpers that should be available in seconday breaks.

He isn't going to finish with a tomahawk dunk on anyone, but with a year of maturity and more talent around him, I look for Payne to really help next season.

He is a streak shooter that can get hot and take over a game. He can also go ice hold and be a detriment. He can drive and dish. Not real confident in him finishing at the rim without some type of circus shot to keep from getting swatted. What we missed most about him this year is his toughness, attitude and ball handling.

I thought Cully was fine last year and one of the few positives going forward. My favorite part of his game was his competitiveness. He played hard no matter the score or who we were playing. This wasn't always the case for our team.

He was better at finishing at the rim than some posters are giving him credit for (IMO). I remember he had a real solid finish where he got fouled by Evan Turner and still made the layup. He dropped 25 against Michigan in the B10 Tourney. He has a prettier stroke than Cartwright but I do'nt think his shooting percentage was very good. That is most likely attributed to 2 things: he was a freshman and the players/system around him didn't lead to many open or high-percentage shots.

He was more athletic than given credit for as well. I think people judge him before making an honest evaluation of him. He was very strong going left. He was nowhere near as creative with the ball as Cartwright has been. He was an average passer but didn't have the vision that C-wright has shown.

Remember at the beginning of the season he held the starting gig over C-wright. It remains to be seen if that is because he was due to have the type of season Bryce has had or if Bryce has really blossomed due to the situation that unfolded. Regardless of which it is, lets hope that Cully is able to fully recover from his injury and come back better next season. If he and Bryce can push each other in practice, he can improve his vision, and improve his ability to drive right then I think we will be happy with them both next year and it will pay dividends for the team's performance.
