Cully Payne Injury

Cully will not transfer. There are a TON of minuites on this team to be had at the two guard positions and the fact he can play both capably means he could average starters minuites (25+) without starting.

Transfer? These guys that transfer think they are all-world or something. The vast, vast majority of these transfers will not be playing at the next level.

Cream always rises to the top. I have no doubt that BC would have worked his way into the starting spot. Fran is no dummy.

It helped Marble's skills with the ball though. Which is important at a slashing position. Hopefully he becomes a guy who can take his defender off the dribble in the years to come.

Roy will need to develop that shot first. If he can become consistent at the 15foot + range, then look out.

The same can be said for Eric May. Those two need to push each other all summer in the gym. If they BOTHcan develop the medium to long range jumper... Big IF. But if it happens, let's just say defenses will have a serious time stopping us. Especially if we can develop/recruit some 3 point threats.

Getting a consistent jumper is all that's holding back Marble at this point. Spend an entire off-season working on that, and we might see a budding star next year.

He prob won't ever be 100% again, in my medically uneducated opinion.

what was his exact injury again? I had hernia surgery (I thought he had too) last week (both sides) and the surgeon said I would be back in business after 4 weeks (running after 2, lifting after 4). I will panic if what he said is a lie

in my opinion, it was the traumatic fracture of 2 vertebrae that likely led to these second and third injuries

ok. i'm probably out-of-the-loop on his injuries. if it were just a sports hernia and an oblique tear repair i wouldn't think twice about him not recovering to 100%.

He is a streak shooter that can get hot and take over a game. He can also go ice hold and be a detriment. He can drive and dish. Not real confident in him finishing at the rim without some type of circus shot to keep from getting swatted. What we missed most about him this year is his toughness, attitude and ball handling.
If he played with Basabe would he finish differently?
With more offensive threats around him does he shoot better, handle better?

Whoa! Where did spinal damage come in?
I think his history of back problems goes back to HS. I just recall at the end of last year he had some issues with his back that had reoccured from his senior year. Not staking my life on it be its my recall.

This is what I was thinking as well. Sounded like it could have been a fall on an attempted finish at the rim. Makes you really appreciate how lucky Dwyane Wade has been all these years. That guy takes more hits than anyone I've ever seen.

Also makes you wonder how good Cully might have been, especially given how good his younger brother appears to be. Cully can't be the same player he once was anymore.

Actually in late December of his senior year of high school, Cully went down hard and broke those vertabrae and was finished for the year. He was enjoying a big senior year to that point.

He played with a back brace for much of his frosh year at Iowa,so he was still experiencing some discomfort. To his credit,he gutted it out and never complained.
Then sometime last summer or fall he must have tore his ab muscle and had the hernia.

I have no idea if the injuries are related, tho.

Well its certainly not hard or uncommon to overcompensate for one injury and cause another but I hadnt heard anything in regards to his back after HS and thought he was OK.
It would be nice if this time off has helped him completely heal. If his back was still bad last year then it is unlikely it is something he will ever get completely away from.

I played BB till I was 45 and I can tell you that your lower back take a beating. Its a shame if he doesn't overcome the problem because he started to show some range last year. I just know that the pain does not go away, even after many years. Hope for the best for him.

Cully has a congential back problem. Even before he broke his back, he had to wear a back brace. Because of the problem he is in constant pain. The injury in high school is no longer a problem.

There was a very good article in the Gazette or Press-Citizen about a year ago concerning the pain Cully has to endure to play basketball. Even without playing basketball, Cully has to take medication for the back pain.

I posted the article on this site, however it has been removed. I have tried to find the article on the net, but with no luck.

is it low back? there is a congenital condition called a pars defect where it is essentially a stress fracture of a weak or abnormally thin area of the vertebrae. almost always in the lumbar spine, but can happen above that. i've treated only one athlete with this, but it was a constant problem because of the activity level. if that is the case, or something like it, it wouldn't have an effect on causing a hernia, but could lead to significant future back problems and possible surgeries.

Lumbar back pain can often be alleviated by strengthening the core where Cully's hernia and problems were. I've never heard of a hernia caused by a low back problem but I would guess there's a correlation between the hernia/muscle tear and low back issues. Given he's had issues with his core and low back, this will likely nag on him for the remainder of his career.
