cubs/diamondbacks

Soto just went deep...solo shot to left.

10-5, Cubs, in the bottom of the 8th...make that 11-5...Byrd just cracked one for a back to back job.

I like his effort alone, but his production is an awesome bonus!

D Lee slid hard into 2nd base to break up a double play today and Bob Brenly gave Byrd all the credit for all the double plays the cubs have broke up this year, gotta love Byrds hustle, this team REALLY needed a guy like that on the team, and like you said his production at the plate has been great, he really looks like a hitter up there. Lets hope guys like Kosuke and Soto keep producing too, Aramis is bound to start hitting I would think

Are bats are heating up except for ARAM. Sounds like Castro will be called up next week.

Based on what?

Anyhow...it was mentioned before the game on the pregame show (radio) that todays game was the last of a string of 19 straight, and that in the previous 18 the Cubs had gone 9-9. Not coincidentally, the win today gets them back to .500. Also, it should be noted that in the last 3 series (@Milwaukee, Washington/Arizona at home), the Cubs scored 25 runs, 7 runs, and 33 runs. Talk abount inconsistency. I bring this up because I wrote a couple of weeks ago that this team is a lot like last years team - good enough to keep you interested, but not good enough to ever really go on a run.

That being said, there are some positives. Soriano looks to be on the sort of tear where he can carry the team for a couple of weeks, and the rest of the lineup (sans Ramirez) seems to be coming around. Chad Tracy started only his second game of the year, and looked great. The starting pitching looks good, especially the two guys who most of us thought would be the weak links, Gorz and Silva. Gorz hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his starts this year, so it was nice to see him get some run support. The bullpen seems to be pitching a lot better with the addition of Zambrano allowing guys to settle into the roles they'll have the rest of the year. Obviously, Grabow didn't look good today, but maybe you can chalk up part of that to pitching with an 8 run lead and was pitching to contact.

Good recap and status of the team, SR. Let's hope the trip to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati can help keep them on the high of the last 3 days.

That's the thing, these types of games coming up are the type of games that tripped them up last year. Piittsburgh and Cincinatti are two teams the Cubs should beat, and I would consider anything other than 4-2 a disappointment.

I'm not convinced yet, but when your starting pitching can hold down a lineup as potent as Arizona's they can hold down anyone. I can't remember any other starter having an outing like Lilly had on Thursday, and you could almost chalk that up to it being his second start.

Another thing that got lost over the last 10 games is just how good the bullpen has been. They haven't been lights out, but they've been much better since Zambrano.
