Could Cully Payne be transferring???

I saw this too, only I hopes its not true. I liked Cully and think this team could use a year without defections. Plus, its not like we have recruits knocking down our doors right now that we know of. And we don't have any need to free up a scholly that I can tell.

I'm with you. Assuming Cully's health would let him return to 100% I think he would have been useful for this team going forward. Maybe not as a starter, but at least as a steady 15-20 minute player who can handle the ball, penetrate some, and hit opens shots.

We need more ballhandlers, not less. If we're losing Cully I'd almost consider trying to find a a true point guard as well as a combo-type guard with two of our three scholarships.

I wonder if he thinks he has a shot at ending up at Butler. That would explain a lot about the timing and a few other tweets I saw on his wall.

I'm actually not too sad to see this. I just don't see Cully as thriving in Fran's system, and I think that we could easily get a freshman or JUCO guard who could contribute as much as he would as a back up. I want Fran to get as many of HIS recruits as soon as possible. I'm just getting really impatient waiting to see who he actually brings in.

Cully wouldn't have fit this system very well in my opinion. Still wondering about Archie.

If Cully really is leaving, I don't see why Fran wouldn't want Archie to stay. I mean, are we really going to be able to sing four quality guys at this stage of the game?

I'm not in favor of bringing Cougil back, unless Archie leaves, I would take that trade.

At this point, knowing what we know, this is a bummer. I liked Cully. And Fran doesn't have anyone on the dotted line to replace him. Hopefully he's got a rabbit in the hat. I want to believe that this might be an indication he does. But I'm not holding my breath.

Agreed.

I really like Cully, but I do have to agree with TheGoodFella on this one...oh well, as they say, if you do not want to be a Hawk, it is time to move on. I also agree that this might increase the stock of several players including Washpun.

Good luck, Cully...the interesting thing is that if he transfers to a D1, he has to sit out another year, right or wrong?

It is now more obvious than ever that Fran needs a point guard or 2 now. There have been about seven names mentioned recently and would hope he could at least land one of them. But how bad would it look and concerned should we be if none of them choose Iowa even with immediate playing time available? I know Fran got Cartwright this route but he has had plenty if time to recruit a point guard and STILL hasn't gotten a commitment yet. If none of these guys choose Iowa then how concerned should we be?

No way. Archie may not end up producing for us. But Cougill DEFINITELY does not fit into a system like Fran's. Archie's got some athleticism, there is a sliver of hope for him. Cougill would have no chance.

Just goes to show that you have to take Fran's comments with a grain of salt. He comes in last year, says he has talked with everyone and they are excited, next thing Fuller is gone. This year he says he doesn't expect any transfers, but over and over says he wants to recruit a PG, next thing, Cully is gone.

This being said, I am not surprised.

Don't jump off the bridge yet. These things don't fix themselves overnight.

I wish Cully all of the best as I will always respect how he put his body on the line and perhaps played harder than anyone except perhaps Cole but I sensed this was coming back in January. In talking with a few folks around Carver, I got the impression that he could have played the last half of the season from a purely physical standpoint, however, I believe the decision to red-shirt was made in hopes of now applying for a medical waiver or whatever that will then allow him to transfer and play right away this fall. Those fears only worsened as I continued to read on this board among others how folks were almost glad he got hurt so Bryce could take over, etc. but I think the final straw may have been the sheer honesty of the coaching staff when they openly discussed their need to sign another PG this spring and how determined they have been to find the next stone for this rebuilding process.
