Convince me we can beat the Zags

We got over the NCAA hump...free rolling now. Win and I will be thrilled. Lose and I will consider this a successful season.

We can't beat the Zags...at least not on this night. Next year is a new season. There will be highs and lows. There will be players that elevate their games. There will be a senior class with tons of experience and two NCAA trips under their belts. And their will be a very large and talented incoming class of freshmen. I wish I didn't have to wait 8 months.

Zags beat Iowa 10 out of 10 times.

No way. The Zags played a complete game last night, but no way they shoot that well every night. Plus we played that on basically their home court. Play that game in Des Moines, or some real neutral site, and we do win a couple of them. I'm not trying to say we beat them a lot, but we do get them a couple times.

Sure...if they play the way they did last night. They didn't play like that the other 4 times I've watched them.

What 4 games did you watch? Zags are averaging .524% from the field for the season ranked #1 in the country.
They shot 9% points higher than that last night. All I keep hearing is boy if they didn't shoot lights out we win. Zags more often and I mean more often do shoot lights out like this. You don't have the 10th rank scoring offense in the country by shooting poorly.

9% higher is quite a bit. That also means they would need to shoot 9% lower in a game to get back to their average. If they would have shot 18% lower than they did, we probably would have won.

Not only that, but they shot 41% from 3 pt range during the year, but over 20% higher vs Iowa. That is 4 extra 3 pointers made, or 12 points. To say that didn't shoot lights out better than normal is just dumb.

Arizona - They shot .397 from the field .235 from 3 and .684 from the line.

San Francisco (3/7) - They shot .369, .273 and .783 respectively.

Pepperdine (3/9) - They shot .525, .471 and .474 respectively.

BYU (3/10) - They shot .403, .400 and .750 respectively.

NDSU (3/20) - They shot .517, .318 and .679 respectively.

Iowa (3/22) - They shot .615, .625 and .619 respectively.

So in the 5 games I saw they shot over 41% from the field twice. They shot over 40% from 3 once. They shot over 75% from the line once. And 4 of those 5 games were the 4 games immediately before they played Iowa.

So I stand by my statement. Based on how they were trending going into the Iowa game and how they played the 5 times I saw them I have very little doubt we can beat them (more than once) if we play them 10 times. We caught them on the wrong night. And to answer the next question...yes they had wide open looks from 3 when I watched them play.

So I have data from 5 games above. I will take the 3rd best shooting percentage (median) from those games and apply it to their attempts against Iowa. Keep in mind 4 of these 5 games were immediately before they played Iowa so this seems fair to me.

FG - 52 (.403) = 21

3 - 16 (.318) = 5

FT - 21 (.684) = 14

That's a grand total of 61 points. We scored 68.

I think your reaching. Fact is Gonzaga Bigs (Wiltjer/Karnowski) would obliterate Iowa in each and every game. Iowa has absolutely no answer for them because Gabe can't play all 40 minutes.. Woody doesn't stand a chance against either and Fran would keep starting him and giving him his 20 to 24 mins against them.. Gonzaga shot well no doubt and much of that was because Iowa didn't have an answer at all to what Mark Few and Gonzaga did..

The data NCAA provided from the 36 Games to date they played doesn't lie, either.. Nor does the data above that you provided.. Gonzaga can flat out shoot the rock! That is a Fact..

So what happened to them against BYU then? Wiltjer was 2-11 for 4 points. Are their bigs just that much better than ours that a team like them can actually steal a game from them and Iowa has absolutely zero chance? That's really unfortunate because I thought Iowa was a little further along as a program...

Now you're just being stubborn. You asked me which games I watched. I answered your question. Based on those 5 games I expected us to beat Gonzaga and based on the stats from those 5 games any reasonable person can see Iowa has a realistic chance if Gonzaga plays like they did in those 5 games.

And how a team is trending often makes a huge difference. Look at Iowa at the end of last year. Look at Michigan State at the end of this year. So thinking the Zags would play like they had in the prior 4 games is hardly out of the question. And most would agree that Iowa is better than all of the teams I referenced other than Arizona.

Keep in mind this all goes back to your post saying Gonzaga would beat Iowa 10 out of 10 games. That's ridiculous. For you to say they will shoot out of their minds all 10 games makes zero sense. I gave a 5 game sample where they didn't shoot out of their minds. And if they're missing outside shots we can pack the zone in and control the big guys inside...because we're not concerned with their outside shooting in those games where they can't make outside shots. So I have absolutely no doubt that Gonzaga would not beat Iowa 10 out of 10 times.
