Connor McCaffery: Hawkeye Baseball Star?

And Connor is not the first Hawkeye play basketball and baseball. Dick Peth did it in the late seventies. Bo Porter played football and baseball. Tom Grogan played football and basketball. Mark Sindlinger did football and wrestling. Several, like Kurt Stange, played baseball and walked on for basketball. And Tim Dwight led a contingent too numerous to mention of those who did football and track. Others included Robert Smith, Quinn Early, Treye Jackson, Bashir Yamini, Chris Gambol, Gary Kostrubala, and probably a dozen others.

In addition to this long list, basketball's Kent Hill briefly tried football, Tavian Banks soccer, and Larry Station tennis.

Kent tried football for exactly one practice, and promptly busted his wrist. I had him in tennis class that semester. Nicest guy in the world, but tennis was NOT his best sport!

Wont happen. His BB fundamentals are terrible. Normally if the are terrible at ine he likely doesnt have them in baseball. His dad is Big coach and he lacks them.

Its not atypical of players who get by for what ever reason against so so competition and have an ego beyond learning.

If you cant see the basketball fundamentals lacking then you arent looking. Wish I had a dollar for everyone that doesnt pan out. Id be ahead.

I guess you will continue to make unfounded statements about “fundamentals”. News flash...Saying something does not make it sound so.

Now you take another step and attack this kid’s ego. OK. Wow. Good to hear you have such inside info.

Your proofreading fundamentals were lacking here I'd have to say. Not that I'm the writing police.

But as to the content, I'd almost think you're talking about Jon Lickliter instead of Connor. I mean Connor can improve but you make it sound like he can hardly dribble a basketball.

I don’t feel he lacks FUNDAMENTALS. I feel that’s his strength! His weakness is foot speed, general athleticism, and of course, shooting

Better to have tried and failed than never tried at all, but it's nearly impossible for an athlete to play two sports at the B1G level as different as basketball and baseball unless he's a real freak athlete. I always got a kick out of people who thought Michael Jordan could play on the PGA Tour after he retired from basketball. He's a "decent" golfer but no where near the skill level of guys even on the mini-tours.

Umm. He shoots like a girl dribbles too high and inly really goes 1 direction. Hid dad taught him.

Honestly he really cant dribble well.

You make a good point but he is weak and lacks fundamentals. Honestly he shoots like most female players which is a strength issue. He is old for a soph.

Have you seen his shooting mechanics? Mechanics are fundamentals. His statement isn't unfounded

If his last name wasn't McCaffery, you guys would probably be applauding his efforts to play two sports at the B1G level. But, we all know how big it makes you feel to denigrate the coach and his family, so carry on you brave warriors!

Hi,

You must be new to sports. Especially sports fandom.

He's not a pro level athlete in either sport, so what does it matter really? It isn't like playing one sport will make his other sport suffer to the point where he's costing himself a pro job.

Out of 1,600 players on MLB rosters there are 4-6 Big Ten players per year active and right now there are only 3 B1G players starting (not a joke). He's not an NBA guy either so to me I guess I'd probably try it too if I liked playing baseball.
