Compare the impact of Woodbury/Gesell to Horner/Brunner as freshmen.

We all know what we got from Horner and Brunner as freshmen and how they impacted our team. What kind of impact do you think Woodbury and Gesell will have next year on the team in comparison to Bru and Jeff?

Agree. The returning players should provide a good foundation and outside of Gatens, we aren't losing much in the way of productivity that can't be improved upon with incoming guys.

My guess would be less...I will look up the stats in a bit

Horner 8.2 pts, 4.4 reb, 4.5 ***, 2.5 to

Brunner 7.5 pts, 5.2 reb, 1.5 ***, 1.7 to

I think Gessel scores more, I don't know that woody is good for 8, could see 6 or more boards though.

I think Gesell will be close to double figures. I think Woodbury will not do what Bru did as a Freshman....but who knows? Typically, big guys have a little more difficulty adjusting to the next level.

I mean its possible, but I just don't see it happening.

Malaprop. Just look at how much Meyers Leonard struggled last year for Illinois and he was a higher rated big man than Woodbury is. He looked lost at times last year for the Illini. For people to expect Woodbury and the freshman class of 2012 to come in and turn things around right away is very foolish.

Nobody is saying that the freshman class will turn it around right away. But I just don't see 7 and 5 as being unrealistic goals. Do I think Woodbury will struggle at times...yes, but I also think he will have some very good games and put up big numbers in a few. I really think he will play closer to Zeller than Leonard as a freshman.

If we will turn it around next year the current sophmore and freshman classes will have to really play well. I have seen some very promising signs from all 6 of them. That would be a decent core. If Gessel or Clemmons are not ready to be the primary point guards you have Marble with plenty of experience in that role already. Then the freshman just have to be role players like White and Ogelsby are this year.

I think one of the biggest problems this team had early in the year was trying to identify roles and lack of competition at certain spots namely PG and C. That won't be a problem next year. For the first time for Fran each position will have a legitimately talented player able to back it up and give the starter a good look in practice. That should translate to better early season success. I hope they can get 12 to 13 wins this year and hopefully 17-18 next.

I will say this, as high end AAU ball has become more prevelant more and more player arrive on campus ready to make an impact, especially bigs who now get the opportunity to Guo against other quality bigs before they get on campus.

A 6-8 true freshman with Jason Whites skills was almost unheard of 15-20 years ago, now its fairly common.

Ultimately what decides this argument is in order to outperform Bru and Horner you have to get excellent production from TWO true freshman. I'd probably put the odds that one of them outperform their counterpart as even money, the odd that both do? Slim to none.

I will agree with that Duff, I would guess that the combo of W/G would average just under what B/H did in terms of numbers. But I also think they won't play near the minutes that Bru and Horner did as freshman.

However, I think both can be very effective at times and help them win some games.

And he is a decent RB too.:)

Both Gesell and Woodbury are better players than Aaron White and Olgelsby. Aaron is averaging 9.0pts and 6.6rb while Josh is averaging 7.5 and 2.0. I know they haven't gotten into the conference yet but both could maintain or increase those numbers as they get stronger. For Gesell and Woody to at least carry those numbers for the year is probable. All in all, Gesell and Woodbury will fit nicely with the current freshman and soph. players and by midseason next year the team should be showing signs of a significant jump in improvement. One thing about Gesell is that he will score if he has to but he will create if it helps the team more which will lower his scoring numbers while improving his assist numbers. I also think that the other incoming freshman as a whole could have very good numbers as well.

I wasnt accusing you of saying that but there will be meltdowns on this board next year if Woodbury isnt playing at a high level right out of the chute.

Again, I wasnt implying you said it. My bad.

I still say that it is a toss up on who will start in the post. Everybody is so confident that Woody will start, but I see a lot more athletic ability in Olaseni and Meyer.
