Cokers response leads one to believe

Still not funny. Give it one more shot.

agreed.

just like the "10% of the population" (living a certain lifestyle) number thrown around as being fact. more propaganda.

unless they were getting their numbers from hn.com.......

Ok then...

I agree, the media greatly exaggerates the numbers of certain interests groups in order to force their hot, sweaty, delicious, deviant lifestyle on the public. There are not great numbers of people in these groups, but if there are small pockets of them, I would like to know where they are.

Sincerely,

This guy.

This is definitely an issue that the police should take seriously. But sexual assault is possibly the one crime where the accused is SOL no matter what. There really isn't anything that protects the accused and their reputation. And I don't have the numbers on this, but I'd wager sexual assault is the crime with the most false accusations, and I'd bet it's not even close.

I'm not saying this girl is lying. But Coker could very well be innocent, and his name will likely get dragged through the mud either way.

Man, I sure wish this board had someone on the ground in IC who was an aspiring sports journalist who could crack the case for us.

My location reads "Corydon/Iowa City." Unfortunately, my current location is the former. I won't be back in Iowa City until Friday.

i do not understand why rape shield laws cannot/do not apply to both parties, at least until formal charges are filed and its public record.

That's a tough call. Would you want a "potential" rapist living next door to your daughter at college? OTOH, innocent-until-proven-guilty went the way of the Model T long ago, media- and public opinion-wise.

You have all tried him and found his suspension to be tied to a false or valid sexual assualt.

When did this turn to sexual assault? He was investigated and not charged so it is quite possible he was not the assailant. This opens the door to: a witness, accomplice, or a valid alibi, or he had knowledge of someone that did assault someone but didnt come forward, withholding evidence, etc.

Or it could mean the suspension is for a different violation such as academics, etc

no, he faced allegations that he committed sexual assault. she accused him.

Not sure if I can believe that guys who apparently 'run' aren't guilty of something. I don't know the facts, but giving up an opportunity to play football for a B1G team and possibly make it in the NFL just because you're worried about your reputation for something you didn't do, doesn't make a lot of sense either.

Not to sound like an a-hole or soft on rape, but I think this number is ginned up by a certain propaganda machine.

Well you're one of my top favorite a-holes. What's not said about this particular statistic is the definition of what comprises a sexual assault. If you're just thinking of some guy that physically forces a woman down a a bed and has sex with her, that's a narrow definition. But if you include stuff like an eight year old that's bullied by a couple of teenage boys to take off her clothes in the bushes so they can look (but no intercourse); or the drunk college girl that's unconscious thats physically assaulted but really doesn't remember (except for those pics some tagged her in on Facebook); or the girl that's on a date and goes along with the kissing and heavy petting but then the guy doesn't let her leave the room and she's scared but feels stupid for getting into that position and she goes along with it just to get out of there....then your definition of assault is more expansive and guess what...it's up to 1 out of four.

From a womans point of view, a horny guy in his twenties is VERY insistent
that they get what they want. They don't take "no" very well. I'm betting a few of you older fellows with daughters that's are ultra proctective know what
I'm talking about...'cause you were like that once, even though you might consider yourself to be a "nice guy".

I don't know the whole story about Coker and we may never know unless he
tells us. It's disappointing for sure as he had so much potential, and to have it taken away because of an accusation like this...true or not...it's tragic. Maybe dads/moms need to give their sons better advice than "be sure to use a condom."

Great post. And as the father of two boys (thankfully now grown and out of the house), I agree 110 percent with your last sentence. We tried to raise our guys to be gentlemen and I will leave this earth satisfied that it appears we succeeded.

Im thinking that is the case as well. Fishbowl or not, if you are not guilty, and you are even slightly thick skinned, and have athletic accolades to back you as well, then that negative reputation doesn't last very long. Especially with the future this guy had. There may have been other factors involved as well. But then again if you run...hmmm.

I think OK4P's point is that this is a pretty unknowable statistic. Therefore it makes it vulnerable to exageration. I don't think we have any idea what the true numbers are.

The whole situation is unfortunate. I respect Coker for a number of reasons. As sad as I am to see him decide to leave Iowa and the football program, I think his decision may even make me respect him more.

And this too...we shall overcome.

Good Luck to Marcus and ALL of Hawkeye Nation should wish him well.

Go Hawks...

Really? Because you knows what it feels like to be "known" by the entire population of a city or better yet state? I don't consider getting a fresh start as "running" to be known as "that guy" regardless whether charges are dismissed would hardly seem worth it, regardless the future you believe he might have had. Look at it from his prospective, not yours.

totally agree.

hard to know how it is to be tagged as sexual assaulter until you've been there, done that. on top of it, everyone knows who you are, everyone will read the paper, etc, etc, etc. AND there is a girl and her friends, both male and female walking around campus with you........ very easy decision to move on, guilty or not.

I think a young man has to be accountable for his actions.

I am sure with Saterfield/Everson assault, there are multiple discussions with the players warning them of these situations and the potential for bad decisions or false accusations. They can become targets for attention seekers or zealous law enforcement. Or they can make decisions they would not normally make.

One just has to look at professional athletes. Kolby Bryant and Ben Rothesberger, among others, have been accused of rape. Who knows if they are guilty, but they put themselves in bad situations by inviting young women into their hotel room and mixing alcohol and hormones. And they have had to pay the price with negative publicity and public legal proceedings.

To a young lady, getting the attention of the star athlete is flattering. But these are young men that are very strong and used to achieving goals on the football field and life. They are used to getting preference along the way, whether it is an athletic scholarship or other conveniences. And then mix alcohol and hormones into the situation and both parties pay the price. Both parties may have different viewpoints of their intentions in the situation. But they suffer the physical, emotional and legal repercussions. So please, lets not blame the young lady when we do not know any of the facts.

What allegedly happened to the young lady in the Saterfield/Everson assault made many angry, and rightfully so. Her life has been changed forever. And though they may be responsible, Saterfield and Everson have paid a price. All because of bad decisions made along the way.

And we all know a guy who is a great person, but give him and few beers and watch out!

Maybe Coker is a great kid. Maybe he made a bad decision or put himself in a bad position. Only two people really know, and they don't agree on what happened. Hopefully others learn from this and maybe it prevents a future occurance.

So you think these men should remain virginal and never invite women over?

Advice for the men who would have a higher propensity of being accused of this so as to become a mark in a civil suit - carry a consent form. Make her sign it. Protect yourself against criminal laws and the litigious American civil tort system.

And to the women in these situations, if you don't want all-star meat, don't go to the all-star suite (or the bathroom in Big Ben's case). Don't be naive, these guys aren't inviting you over to talk about hair, makeup and the latest articles in Cosmo. Again, I don't mean to sound callous or stereotypical, but I suspect when a Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant or other major all-star is inviting some random gal to his motel room, in 99.999% of cases, he's got one thing on his mind and I think that 99.999% of women out there are smart enough to know this. Timbow is the .0001% guy - you can go to his suite.
