Cody Larson talks drug charge, recruitment, etc

I think the whole timing of the lick firing when all the other stuff going on made it very easy for him to want to just turn the page on the past sort of thing, which Iowa was part of...I agree that it probably was in everyones best interest for him to move on. Ironically, lick approach to closing the deal on him was more of a ''tell me why you deserve to be awarded a scholly to play for me at Iowa'' approach, but now that his life is in disarray, dovovan's '' i will be your best friend'' approach is what sold him.

I'm not... this is one more loss that could come back and haunt us... Kids make mistakes, if you've had teenagers in the house, you know what I mean.

Ya, but he didn't learn from the first one, drinking. You really believe he didn't know it was illegal to give prescription drugs to someone else?

Not for me to say... but after having 3 teens in the house and a 4th just a couple years away - anything they do is possible. I can tell you they are unpredictable and do things that don't make sense to adults that have been removed from the "teen scene" for awhile...

Besides, a bunch of "quality" schools were willing to take that chance... including schools with resumes of recent success. Interesting how some "Iowa" fans are saying we don't want him now that he moved on, but wanted him before he decided to go to Florida.

Before making too much on who was recruiting him remember this is the spring. There are a lot of kids who get offers this time of year that aren't even on the radar earlier. Spring is when the programs, even top ones, fill in their rosters. They generally get the ones they really want in the fall.

By the way I have 2 sons in their 30s, so I know about teenagers.

I also know about substance abuse and he makes some comments in this story that look a little like red flags. Sorry, but sitting in your basement with one person popping pills is NOT casual social partying. On the heels of a DUI, this should be a matter of concern. I had the same concerns when I saw the initial team pictures with Tucker. Kid just looked uncomfortable in his own skin. Many people who feel like this end up self medicating.

Larson will be a very good player for Florida before all is said and done. His talent is not/ has never been an issue for me. Everything I have read about his game has led me to believe all along that he will be a very good college player.

On the subject of the Drugs. This article finally cleared some things up for me. Right now after reading that article, assuming all answers were honest, I think Florida is not only getting a very good recruit, but a kid who has learned from a dumb mistake.

I also have 3 teenagers in my house and I can tell you without hesitation that I buy his answer that he did not know what he was doing was illegal. It sometimes surprises me what my own kids (who all are honor roll students) sometimes don't know.

You think as a parent that you have taught them well and covered everything but then.... sometimes they do or say something that makes you realize just how little life experience they have under their belts.

First off you are a phenom to be able to guage Tucker by his HS picture. Really really incredible ability there.

As far as red flags with Larson... I agree there are red flags but there also seems to be ample reason to give another chance at this point. JMHO.

I disagree with both of your comments...

Larson will be an average college player and have always thought that, he didn't really play against much competition and even then was not just this dominating stud on the floor...

Second of all that was not his first stupid mistake so to say he is going to learn from this one is a laugher.

I'll give you the very good to very average D1 player as a lets just wait and see, but seriously how can you know him learning from this is a laugher? Seriously, he has 2 years suspended prison sentence hanging over his head for sharing prescription pain killers. Something you and I both know is wrong and illegal but I'm not so sure he really did at the time. Laugher is a little presumptious I think.

Not saying I judged Tucker from his high school picture. It was the first team pictures at Iowa. It really was striking, and having worked over 20 years with young people who self-medicate with alcohol and drugs, that look is often present in young people prone to substance abuse. Without going into too much detail, it can be a sign of problems with chemical receptors in the brain.

With respect to Larson, you have no idea how many people I have heard say that after getting one or multiple DUI's, they decided to quit driving instead of quit drinking. These people also often minimize the consequences of their actions and put reponsibilty on others.

Never said you didn't... I was just stating my observations about teens and the decisions they make.

Too many fans make comments about things they have no idea about or what took place (not saying you did) and dismiss a person on an article written or "what they hear". I come from the old school of "let me see it with my own eyes" or "proof is in the puddin" before I let too much of what is commented on influence me. Most times I ignore posts about previous recruits or transferred players because too many make comments based on hearsay. An interview with Larson intrigued me and isn't hearsay...

CAAr, with your experience, I'm sure you probably do see things that most don't, so my appologies for getting sarcastic with you. It just seemed outlandish on the surface at first.

It's cool. Also, understand that I don't know either of these two personally, so my impressions are just what I get access to from the media. Also, understand that, as per the NIAAA, the vast majority of individuals (75%) who at one point in life abuse alcohol or drugs, stop this behavior without any intervention.

The problem is not with the teenager or young adult who is just being irresponsible, the problem is those that show some predisposition to drug alcohol dependence (self-medication) or those that develop a dependence from the physical damage certain drugs can cause over time.

From this, I really did respond strongly to the first pictures of Tucker and immediately expressed my concern on these boards, well before the first arrest in IC.

As far as Larson is concerned, there are a couple things about how he talks about these incidents that raised concerns.

1) When asked about his experience of watching his team play without him and getting beat in the state tournament, he didn't say he felt bad because he let his team down and couldn't help them. His comments were entirely self-centered, which is a common thread among those predisposed to alcoholism or drug addiction. They can't see how their actions affect others. The same could be said about the fact that he never commented on how he felt bad about getting his teammate in trouble by giving him pills.

2) The fact of shifting to talk about others when discussing his actions - my mother reminded me I had the pills, my friend saw me taking them and his leg hurt bad too. I didn't really start taking them until I started hanging out with the teammate.

3) The propensity for him to focus on the pain aspect when clearly he was taking them to get intoxicated. Also, the comment about never taking more than the prescribed amount. Each of these comments could be a sign of denial.

4) His discussion about talking to kids and saying it was helpful, because he couldn't talk with his teammates. No discussion how he was able to turn his situation from one of shame to empowerment by sharing his experience and how he grew from it.

5) The fact that it appears that his method of withstanding temptation is just to go to the gym and stay away from trouble. He also talked about learning the dangers of drugs. My experience is that if there is a predisposition to substance abuse, these types of solutions are not effective in the long haul.

All this being said, it is entirely possible that both of these kids are a part of the 75% that just need to grow up and stop making stupid mistakes.

Good stuff CAAR... thanks for sharing.

Sorry to say it, but predict that Cody will have future drug problems and possibly OD within the next couple of years.

He and his friend were getting high together basically. Not a big deal. Normal for high school boys. A little odd that they weren't out looking for girls, but nevertheless pretty normal. He sounds like a tool in the interview, but so would any high school kid getting asked the same questions. He is manning up to the situation. I don't have a problem with anything he did or said.
