Coaching Salary Dollars per Win

Yay, another meaningless discussion about coaches salary. None of this makes any difference to what happens on the football field and KF's salary is not coming out of our pockets.

It does when you work right in the middle of academia and see the money that moves thru this place or frivolously spent, then get hit up for a monthly contribution. Kind of hard to swallow when millions are spent just to upgrade a N endzone or add luxury tables in the N part of Carver-Hawkeye arena. This after they put a freeze on all/most university salary increases this past year. Yea, people around here get kinda pissed.

Screw that. They could make that happen. Our research department comes out of grant $$ and we are 90% funded by the federal gov (NIH) but do we get all the funding from the gov? Hell no, we have to pool it with other departments and have it distributed. Our PI gets credited for bringing in so many millions of $$$$, but we don't get it all.
True, but the athletic department money is pooled just like your research department is pooled with other research departments.

The only reason reason baseball, golf, rowing, tennis, or any other non revenue sports exist at Iowa is because the football and basketball pull in nine figures every year.

Again, none of those things are paid for with tax dollars. None.

If you want better research equipment, it has to be paid for with taxpayer money (or donations). Same for the law school, same for the dentistry school, and so on.

All of that stuff you mentioned comes from either donations or athletic department revenue.

Yea I get it and accept it. I'd rather have the football team keep trucking along. It's just every once-in-awhile when one puts things into perspective, one realizes how stupid this shit gets at times. Carry one.

I dont think the original post is meaningless at all, at least I find it interesting. The "debate" about how much KF makes is almost entirely meaningless though.

We both agree on how stupid it is.

But like Doug Stanhope so eloquently put it, “Everyone has their own ‘stupid’.”

Hawkeye sports and fishing just happen to be my “stupid.”

If you step back and look at the really big picture...its all really stupid. Bryce Harper is going to sign a $300M+ contract this offseason and yet our teachers and scientists don't make shit. Its best to just not think about it on a larger scale :)

I'll admit I looked through it and thought "neat"....but I thought that the post would fuel yet another KF salary discussion.

Exactly what I am talking about. My sop box really wasnt just about Ferentz and college coaches, most is about these MLB and NBA and other players. Wasnt there a pitcher who signed this year who was supposed to make on average $8000.00 a pitch? This is when gets rediculous.

Free market, guys. Ask Russia and Venezuela how the other method works out. I’m not ready to move yet.

OH no. Don't get me wrong. I am definitely all for free market and smaller government. Free markets is what keeps costs down for the consumers. In addition, the quality of the product is better along with customer service. I'm not stating anything about parties, so I hope this is not getting too political for Rob. This is all I will go on this front. I'm viewing this as an economic discussion, not political.

The numbers are a little off since the compensation package is a family affair. When you look at the family compensation the number goes from 580k/win to over 680k/win.

Hayden made around 350K for the YEAR in 1997. The Ferentz family makes almost twice that for a single win.

To be fair, you would have to add in the OC salary for the other 13 teams also. Let's not mix apples and oranges. ;)

I've updated Brohm salary in the original post to reflect today's announcement of the increase in his base to $6,000,000 per year. Brohm is now the 3rd highest compensated coach in the B1G behind Harbaugh and Meyer. Kirk is now the 7th highest in the B1G and 4th highest in the B1G West.

Now that the regular season is over I thought it would be interesting to look at the B1G head coaching salaries and 2018 win totals and see who is getting the most "bang for the buck". Salary information is taken from the USA Today's Coaching Salary database and is school payed base salaries as not all bonuses have been determined yet. That source is linked below.

Coach (school) | Salary | 2018 Wins | Dollars Per Win
B1G West:
Fitz (NW) $3.6M 8 wins $450,000 per win (best value in West this year)
Chryst (WI) $3.8M 7 wins $530,000 per win
Ferentz (IA) $4.7M 8 wins $580,000 per win
Fleck (MN) $3.55M 6 wins $590,000 per win
Brohm (PU) $6.0M 6 wins $1,000,000 per win (New salary as of 11/29/2018)
Frost (NU) $5.0M 4 wins $1,250,000 per win
Smith (IL) $5.0M 4 wins $1,250,000 per win

B1G East:
Allen (IU) $1.8M 5 wins $360,000 per win (best value in East this year)
Durkin (MD) $2.5M 5 wins $500,000 per win (fired before season started)
Franklin (PSU) $4.8M 9 wins $530,000 per win
Dantonio (MSU) $4.3M 7 wins $610,000 per win
Meyer (OSU) $7.6M 11 wins $690,000 per win
Harbaugh (MI) $7.5M 10 wins $750,000 per win
Ash (RUT) $2.2M 1 win $2,200,000 per win

Observations:

In the West, you could make a good case that Fitz and Chryst are offering decent value for their respective schools most years. Fitz wins it this year by a wide margin. Ferentz, Fleck and Brohm are also not far behind. Lovie Smith is a terrible value for IL. Year 1 for Frost, but he's expensive and these figures do not include the money Nebby is paying their past two coaches. Feel free to use this for any Nebby fans who think we pay too much for Ferentz.

In the East, there is a huge variation from top to bottom in salaries. Best value this year might be Durkin's replacement at MD and Allen is probably under paid at Indiana. Meyer and Harbaugh's salaries are 50% above the next closest salary in the league.

Well nobody gets a better bang for their buck than Rutgers. Wow.

Commissioner Delaney would be proud of that move.
Yup. New Yorkers who will fill their beloved Yankee Stadium to sit 500 feet away from Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen as they play there for the 861st time won't go near the joint when the B1G plays in the Pinstripe Bowl.

What a market to expand the Big Ten into.

Finally! After the last 12 - 13 years, the $ are aligned with the results. "Investment" has officially flat-lined and the debate should be put to rest, since, we're finally paying for what we get. I feel cozy.
