University of Iowa senior defensive end Adrian Clayborn today was recognized as a Consensus All-American by the NCAA.

Clayborn, who was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks and Rotary Lombardi awards, becomes Iowa’s 21st consensus All-American. Iowa’s last consensus All-American was running back Shonn Greene (2008). Furthermore, Clayborn becomes Iowa’s first defensive end to be tabbed a Consensus All-American since Leroy Smith (1991).

Clayborn was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Walter Camp All-America teams. He was also recognized as an honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Weekly. The St. Louis, Mo., native was also named first team all-Big Ten by both league coaches and media for the second straight season.

Clayborn, who is a permanent team captain, totaled 51 tackles during his senior campaign, including seven for a loss of 42 yards. He had 3.5 sacks and forced a fumble. He started 29 consecutive games and 36 during his Hawkeye career.

Consensus All-America

The players listed were listed on the most first team All-America teams competing against players at that position only. Ten players were unanimous choices by the five organizations used in the consensus chart — American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Foundation. Note: Each of the five teams has a different way of listing the returner or all-purpose player. For the purpose of the Consensus All-America team those categories were treated as one position.

Congrats to Adrian Clayborn.

It's a little early, but could James Morris be Iowa's next Consensus All American on defense?

I am confused.

Thought you had to make first team on 3 of the 5 lists that are considered official, but this looks like he only made it on 2 of the 5, and he's getting a free pass for getting honorable mention somewhere.

Great for him and the University but not sure it was earned this year kind of lived on reputation this season.

Well deserved. I'm glad the AFCA and Walter Camp voters were able to look beyond the stats and see what a lot of fans couldn't or wouldn't.

If it makes you feel better, consider Clayborn's awards this year as recognition for his four year performance at Iowa. He had a great career as a Hawkeye even if he didn't dominate this year as much as people were hoping.

What the he!! is wrong with some of you? Must be the time of year, winter solstice, too much darkness, sugar highs, sugar lows, stress of Christmas shopping, etc. This is a great honor for a tremendous Hawkeye. Leave it at that.

It is definitely an honor. Though Dynasty's response was hilarious too...
