CJ's debut

The extended interview with Alex Smith saved CJ a lot of unwanted attention. What a brutal series to open with.

Nice they let him run a few draw plays there instead of having to drop back in long yardage over and over

Not too shabby of a start at all. Playing behind those 2nd and 3rd team Olinemen he didn't exactly have a clean pocket for even a second. (not that he's ever been used to that) But he fired a couple balls over the middle I was impressed with too. I'm not going to over analyze it but that's about as good of a first go as he could have asked for.

I can see that the 49ers drafted CJ for a reason. He really looked calm and natural. It can be seen that when he masters the offense, he'll be a high performing qb. He still needs to improve his pocket presence. He needs to get that "oh sh*t, here comes the blitz and my line didn't pick it up" get rid of the ball into his thought process. He had one sack where he held onto the ball too long. But he did look really good, otherwise.

I get what you are saying. He needs to be more aware of the rush and react better to it. But it almost sounds like you are encouraging him to panic when hears footsteps.

Encouraging him to panic? Are you saying being aware of the pass rush isn't primary to what a qb must know or see on every play? Did you watch the game last night?
if you play qb and you don't have a bailout built into your mental preparation for each play, you'll get sacked. If qb's get sacked too often and it's because they held onto the ball too long, they won't play. The play I am talking about I was like throw it away, throw it away and boom, he got sacked.

Good for CJ.

I always thought he had it.

Some of those throws he made early in his career at Iowa were just amazing.

There were a few that sure stick out in my mind. The one against Purdue I think it was when he was rolling left and threw across his body to the right on a rope to Vandeberg was ridiculously good. His throw to T Smith at ISU in the corner of the end zone was a rope of a perfect throw too. Then later that same game his bomb to Vandeberg. When he can set his feet he has a really good arm. I've heard it described as average by pros but I'd put it up there as better than that. He's obviously showing it as it hasn't taken him long to start climbing the depth chart. Hoyer isn't exactly Aaron Rodgers either who's to say he can't beat him out at some point this year?

And the throws to Vandeberg in last year's ISU game. Just precision placement of the ball and tremendous catches by Vandeberg.

No doubt I think I know which ones your referring too. He put like 2 or 3 of them over the corners shoulder right on his hands in stride. That TD he threw to him had to be perfect too as he was rolling out doing it. The corner was all over JVB on it.

Christian Kirksey (among others) took a knee tonight during the anthem. Was very disappointed to see that.

I think so much hinges on how they articulate the WHY behind their protest. Kaepernick came off as a highschool freshman who read one Malcolm X book and all of a sudden thought he was the smartest man in the room. His quote after his initial protest:

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

That was a pretty inflammatory statement demonstrating a complete lack of appreciation for the nuance of the situation.

I have heard other players explain their protests by stating that they love this country and the flag, but they are protesting as a way to draw awareness to social injustice. It is much easier for me, personally, to sympathize with the protest when explained that way.
