Chuck Long said 6 Hall of Famers coached him at Iowa

I can see 5 making it but not McCarney. I will say based on what McCarney accomplished in Ames he should be a legend there and should have a statue. No one has matched him in the last 40 years. Their wrestling program will start to rise again. If only Polly realized they can have success and a Hawkeye shall lead them.
 
i think if you add it up Kirk has had 3 assistants become go on to become a HC,

chuck long-
Bret Bielima
Joe Philbin (NFL)

but 2 of those were holdovers from Fry's staff, and the only one would I call a succcess, would be Bielima.
 
I think Chuck might be getting a bit sentimental recalling the glory days. Just because someone has coached a long time does not equate to a HOF career.
McCarney did amazing things (with often not much to work with) while he was in Ames. I agree 100% he had a very good, very respectable career, but he isn't a HOF-caliber coach IMO.

Not quite on the OK4P level, but the subtleness within the way he works it is kinda a thing of beauty.

I think polite or respectful might be closer than sentimental. Didn't want to leave Mac out as he's very well-liked in Iowa CIty.

Kirk is already in for all intents and purposes. You coach 18 years at the same program and have a winning record, you're in.

McCarney will be in the state of Iowa sports hall of fame, if there is such a thing.

A question for you. Maybe you've noticed, but the board has gone thru a change and has now decided that KOK was a good offensive coordinator. Here's my question: If you're the head coach at Iowa and you bring in 2 proven offensive coordinators (Polasek/O'Keefe) in the off-season, why would you choose an unproven coach with ZERO OC experience to be your new offensive coordinator over the other two? Especially when coming off a disappointing season?

Because he's your son.

In addition, wasn't it announced that BF would be the OC prior to KOK being invited to join the staff. This is a perfect mentoring situation for BF as Iowa's previous OC is on staff and running the same O as before. Should be a good transition and more successful than when GD was here.

Do you think Mark Richt is a HoF'er? There are some differences, but essentially they are the same guy. I also realize the next 2-4 years can sway a lot of things for both guys.

Good point but I would say no for Richt and yes for Ferentz. Richt got let go from Georgia after 14 or 15 seasons while Kirk's still going strong after 18 at the same school. It seems Ferentz has a slightly better reputation as a coach then Richt, in my opinion. Kirk's been 4-time B1G coach of the year and Natl. Coach of the Year in '02 while Richt has less accolades.

I think the perception is that Kirk's done more with less than Richt, whose teams have often been expected to contend only to fall flat. That's happened with Kirk as well but not as often.

But you're right in that the next 2-4 years could go a long way in determining their H of F credentials.
